The sheer power of these are incredible, being near one on another boat and seeing them go past gives you a real appreciation of the absolute capability of them.
Used to live near the Mississippi River near St Louis, used to enjoy watching the Tugs assist Barges that came through, they always seem so small compared to the ships that assist but they have so much power and sound amazing!
I did look for something like that. They have a tugboat mission in a ship simulator being built. You do transition to the cargo ship later but hopefully with updates you can play it like trainz.
Wow! I must say this is probably the most clearest and colorful tugboat operations video I've seen so far. 60fps certainly makes a difference. Keep them coming but please stay safe, a towline parting is no joke. Many thanks.
It's amazing to see the power of a tugboat. Who has the right away with sailboats and tug boats? Your videos bring me back in time boating as a kid read right return. Great job.
they do occasionally break, despite the maintenance on them being very thorough. it is not a fun experience for anyone involved, and people have been killed by them.
There is a lot of skill, and knowledge needed to operate a tugboat. I have no idea how long a person would have to train in order to be a tugboat captain but, I suspect it would take many years.
Very nice video even though I have seen tugs at work in person your video is so real and shows more than being on shore. The narration is spot on and excellent sound & video to top it off. Thank You for your time also ... Cheers
Excellent. I know what you mean. These tugs function beautifully. The operators are exquisitely skilled. I'm very impressed how they don't lose their nerve in this obviously dangerous life they've chosen.
It always amazed me how such a little boat could pull such a massive ship. It seems to defy logic! You would think the tug needs to be just as big and powerful as the ship it's towing.
+TelclivoGaming HD : I don't have the option 'reply' underneeth your comments so i can't answer you personally. Maybe your settings in Google+ aren't set on "anyone". To answer your question -> I could do that, but the problem is that i respect the privacy of my colleagues by blurring them in the video. If i would wear a helmet cam then they will be in the video ALLOT of times, and it will take hours to blur them. But i'll see what i can do :)
man actually seeing how high that one lifeboat on the back of that ship really shows how far it actually has to drop if they actually have to use it...
I believe Ocean going tugs exceed 10,000 HP in each of its two engines. No telling how much torque they are capable of making especially with twin turbos wide open.
Fantastic sounds from those Anglo-Belgian Corporation engines. The turbos really start singing at 12:10, when full bollard pull is applied. The stern tug applies steering and braking force in both direct and indirect modes - this video is a great example of these towage modes. One question -are these Voith-Schneider drives? Superb video, thanks for letting us share your world for a job.
A diesels over elec is fairly common and has been around for a long time , the mains are always going to spool up to meet the demand of the generators. There are. Few harbor tugs that have some limited battery storage for light work
Good video. Thank you. Was hoping you could give a little more information as to why you swing port and starboard so us land lovers can understand what and why of tugboat work. Thanks again.
+ShippingHarbors 8:27 you mention pulling to the port side. To clear a dock or something like that? 10:43 the engines rev up, were you slowing the ship? 11:20 looks like your tug is moving sideways? 12:25 you back up and throttle up. The video quality is great just feels like a little more "window dressing" would make it even nicer. Things like what the ship carries container, bulk etc. What lock you're coming from and what dock your going to, what's the name of the other tug. All these last things really don't mean much but it does make it more personable. Kinda like your showing a new person to that area and the job what is going on. Saw the start up video and the engine room is immaculate. I don't know anything about boats and the like but get along with machinery of most every kind very well and really appreciate what it takes to keep the 'coal burners' in such good shape.
+Robert Palmore At 8:27 the ship comes out of the lock, and it needs to make a 90 degree turn to starboard because that were the destination is. So we pull the stern to port with an indirect manoeuvre (using the tug as a 'weight' forcing the stern to portside). The other 2 timesstamps are slowing the ship with indirect towing, but keeping the towingline nice in the middle of the ship so it only polls straight back and slowing the ship. The last manoeuvre is pulling to starboard in order to get the ship closer to it's berth. You can see people on the quay there ready to receive the mooring lines. I hope it's a bit more clear now :-) I'm not sure if my english is 100% correct.
The ship in this video has 29,767 horsepower, so 4 tugs like this one should be able to counter it. That being said, if the ship was already moving and the tugs tried to do anything about it, they'd probably just get flipped over, and if this was a tug-of-war from standstill, the tugs would have a huge advantage because their ducted thrusters are able to exert much more static thrust (per horsepower) than the propeller on the cargo ship, which is designed for optimal efficiency while at speed.
Also if the tug captains were smart they would spin the ship around on her axis so she couldn't gain any momentum. They wouldn't have to overpower her!
Are these tractor tugs? With those "blender" looking propulsion units? I noticed you could broadside while trying to slow the ship down and usually only the tractor tugs can do that.. Awesome videos!
ZALIG! in Port of antwerp! Werk je er nog steeds? ik ben een matroos sleepboot in opleiding ;) en wil voor stuurman en dan kapitein gaan :D! echt zalig om dit te zien!
It depends on allot of different factors. The location you want to work (harbor, river, sea, ocean). You need different papers for all of them. But I'm not sure which ones those are because I only work in the harbor-part which needs not as much papers as on the ocean for example.
So the tugboat is steering the vessel from behind with the help of tension on the cable I recon? Why do these big ships need steering there? is it the low level of water?
no, it is because the big vessel is unable to make sharp turns and manoeuvre to her berth place all by itself. such a ship isn t simply made for that, it is made to sail at sea, not to manoeuvre. that is why it needs one tug boat on the bow, to help her bow, and one tug boat at the stern, to help her stern. berthing a ship, is a matter of meters, sometimes, centimeters. with tug boats, a pilot or captain can accomplish that by giving instructions to them.

OMG. Those mains sound like a jet airplane is about take off. Simply beautiful!
So up until about 12:00 I was thinking damn those turbos are really singing together nicely. And I was wrong. He wasn't even loading it yet.
Up until 12:00ish that was just what tickling sounds like.
12:25 12:45 13:00 gerat
Sounds like a jet engine combined with the grunt of the V12's

From 10:45 to 13:00, those turbos are screaming!!! That is the coolest sound,...the whine of a turbo. ✊🏻💪🏻
I watch this video all the time after few beers. Best sounding engines ever!
I need "Tugboat simulator" game now
Broo but fr tho
let me know when i can download
Ship sim extreme.
👍🏻
you already have ship simulator series
I did look for something like that. They have a tugboat mission in a ship simulator being built. You do transition to the cargo ship later but hopefully with updates you can play it like trainz.

Deiniol Pook Thx 4 the compliments :)
12:20 you might wanna lock yourself in the bathroom prior in preparation for ur eargasm welcome😏
That's not even full throttle
Oh, the sound! The glorious sound!
A suggestion: add the location to the description: this is the Port of Antwerp as shown on the placards on the tugs. :)
That thing took to leaning pretty good at times! Can't help but think it's gonna be a wild ride for that ship being empty.
If it travels empty it has ballast tanks that it will fill with water to weigh it down and make it more stable
Would it be possible to maybe see some Helmet Cam/POV of you on the tugboat assisting a ship. Just to get a feel of your job. Thanks!
You mean like this vid?
Amazing how strong these tug boats are!!
I like the clear, crisp picture with the awesome sound.
Very nice, keep up the good job !
amazing sound, amazing turbos, love it !!!
turbos..??? I watched the entire thing, and not once did a turbo feature.

Very cool vid, thank you for sharing this with us! Beings back memories of summers on Lake Superior in Thunder Bay. 👍😎
'MSC alexa, play MSC despcito'
I want a tug boat as my everyday boat just for that sound lol
The turbos gave me an eargasm
Captain: Alexa, call tugboat. Alexa: Calling tugboat.
A tugs power and absolute ability to move thousands of tons of steel ship and their cargo with precision. The most powerful earth movers are no match.
The force this cable has to endure is phenomenal, i wonder if it has ever snapped on duty! I see people staying away when it pulls.
i would assume no one would be allowed on the bow deck when that cable is out and the ship is pulling.
they do occasionally break, despite the maintenance on them being very thorough. it is not a fun experience for anyone involved, and people have been killed by them.
00:05 wow she's light. The bulb is 10ft above the water line easily; maybe more.
Yea, no containers on board..
@the real BLACK FACE she bailed out ready for the container to be loaded, it will lower when loaded
Facinating jet engine like turbo but that's the frequency that deteriorated my ear drums
That turbo whistle is bad ass

I used to make those tugboats in Rainier Oregon at Foss boatyard.
That tug boat is pushing their limit
Lovely big engine sounds :) Thank you
realy nice video, always a pleasure to se a good tug crew in action! love how those diesels sings for us too. Now I miss my days at sea ;)
i also dock this same ship in to my port it comes to bristol in the uk and i dock it with my tug using bow to bow technique
It always amazed me how such a little boat could pull such a massive ship. It seems to defy logic! You would think the tug needs to be just as big and powerful as the ship it's towing.
Man, MSC Shipping was busy that day, 2 ships in port at once!
+James Pendergrass That's not allot ;) Sometimes there are 6 to 7 MSC ships moored at once at the terminal.

Tell me more about these engines. Is there only 2? How much power do they make per engine and what size it the engine?
Offroad Addict in this same channel there is a video about starting this same Tugboat, in the description it said that both engines are 197 liters.
@@haydona1845Yes, there are two ABC V12’s. They are the DZC series. Both produce 3600HP a piece. Engine displacement is 197L.

They use marine versions of locomotive engines.
Descomunal , precisa y muy coordinada expresión de trabajo pesado. Muchas gracias.
Seems quite a bit more simple without the wind! What is the harbour depth? Beautiful day in Antwerp.
I LOVE this engine sound!
Please never electric drive...

@Tim Viertel. Tim i'm 79yo, here in New Zealand, Its never going to happen, believe me, Imagine electric passenger planes???

Hi Robert, i'll be happy to answer your questions. Please tell me which timestamp those events have and i'll give some info about the manoeuvres.

"Alexa, play despacito..."
turbo music 😍😍😍💖
great vid love your tug boat would like tosee her from the shore as have only seen bits maybe do a walk around

Bravo
Why does the winch have these hydraulics on top?
it s the brake
And I get nervous driving a 18 foot John boat in a place like that
AWESOME MY LIFE!!
is this at Panama canal? Is it because the channel bent too much so indirect steering is needed?
Great.
Who runs the winch and from where?
So if wanted to become a tug captain. What kind of training? how long would it take? how is the job market(lots of jobs or no)?
It depends on allot of different factors. The location you want to work (harbor, river, sea, ocean). You need different papers for all of them. But I'm not sure which ones those are because I only work in the harbor-part which needs not as much papers as on the ocean for example.
Is there a high demand for people wanting to be a captain or is the demand mostly for deckhands?
in minutes 8:26 this is quite dangerous, the rope could break and hit the crew
What happens if you say, ‘Hey Alexa?’
what do you charge to assist a vessel into port?

So the tugboat is steering the vessel from behind with the help of tension on the cable I recon? Why do these big ships need steering there? is it the low level of water?

That tug had no effect until the ship put it in reverse.
do it use turbo ore super charge
What’s the life span on the mooring/towing cables?
Moring lines depends. the company I'm at we replace the headline every two years.
How many tons of pull can this tug do?
70
Kallosluis ?
are you the engineer onboard?

yes
