Marie Kondo in her book actually has a whole chapter emphasizing how her decluttering process is supposed to result in people being more careful about the stuff they buy and accumulate going forward, but unfortunately, that part of her message got lost with the popularity of the show and her method. The KonMari method is essentially supposed to be like taking an intense, 6 month course (she emphasizes that you shouldn't drag it out too long), where a big part of the process is supposed to teach you a lot about yourself and your relationship with your things. If you complete it successfully, you will only be left with the things you value and not feel compelled to buy more things. You should only have to KonMari once in your life. It is a bit on the idealistic side (I can't imagine having to do only one declutter my whole life), but I like the concept. I think a lot of people miss the intentions behind the KonMari method other than just decluttering.
Yeah the only thing that has worked for me is moving. That’s the only time where I look at something and the cost of dragging it with me to a new city.
For your glass containers, I watched minimal mom and her idea was awesome for them, you store them all with the lid on so you don't have to go looking for it and you limit yourself to only what can fit in the cabinet so you don't start hording containers
More videos on not buying things in the first place would be great. I’m currently doing a no-buy month and it’s so empowering. It really highlights the importance of choosing where your money goes.
I haven't actually watched the video yet, but I wanted to say I'm so glad you're addressing this. I know "decluttering" isn't eco-friendly in and of itself, but for me I caught the decluttering bug before starting my eco-friendly journey (thanks Marie Kondo), and I really found the decluttering step necessary to taking better care of my stuff and getting the longest life out of it as possible. When there's too much stuff, it just doesn't get the same care. Especially my clothes, I am so much more likely to get to a stain or rip quickly rather than just letting it sit forever while I wear the dozens of alternative items I have.
Decluttering seems to lead to huge piles of stuff ending in trash or dumpster if not done responsibly. But the problem is overconsumption in the first place
I always gift my usable items to my Buy Nothing Group. I know it’s going to someone who can actually use it, instead of sitting in a thrift shop and possibly getting trashed. I’m lucky that my group is very large and active!
A fantastic recommendation I got from the Minimal Mom on UA-cam is to store food containers with the lids on. Game changer for me. It takes up more space, but how many containers do we really need?
I like it! I store my lids in an old ramen box (the 12pk fits in a standard cupboard so nice) and when the lids all don't fit... time to declutter the containers. :)
I just found your channel a week ago or so and have had you and Madison on non stop. Thank you for all your inspirational/real advice for living a more sustainable life. I was all in years ago then had kids and slipped back into old habits. Watching you guys brought me back. Love from California 💕
I tried this but I don't always use the lids to my pots at the same time. Personally I can't always deal with the extra executive function needed to take off a lid. We're all different and glad you found what works for you! 😃👍
I'm cleaning this morning already. I'm still in the phase of using up my old cleaners before I buy or make more sustainable options. I did make some orange peel vinegar I'm going to start using and see how I like it. Great video Shelbi. Love a good clean and declutter video.
Yessss a Blueland sponsor!!!! Love them. One of TWO hand soaps I am not allergic to, and the other one comes in single use plastic bottles. For those with sensitive skin (I am literally allergic to everything) their hand soap is the best.
Ooo, I think this is the push I needed to give their hand soap a try! I have stupid sensitive skin and just use an unscented glycerin soap... and it's boring me to deeeath. But whenever I try a different brand, or even type of bar in the same brand, the hives... so sad (even when on quadruple doses of antihistamine for a physical allergy).
I really try to clean and declutter in January and AFTER make my no buy year plan. That way I can really zone in on what I over bought or what I do need (and make a game plan to sustainably and budget friendly) acquire those things. This might not work for everyone but I have done this the last two years and it really helped me.
We started using Blueland to replace a lot of our cleaning products when they run out and really like it so far. We moved into a new apartment recently and the toilet has a pretty weak flush so there was a lot of grime caked on from whoever lived there before us. I've used a lot of toilet cleaner to try to remove it but actually the only thing that has seemed to work well is scratching the blueland toilet tabs directly onto the grime and letting it sit for a bit. Sort of like your trick with the pan but for the toilet haha.
So excited to see you talking about this topic especially when decluttering seems to be a top trend lately. Hearing you talk about how decluttering sustainably is not as easy as "get this stuff out of my house" but that it requires further steps to find out where you can sell it or donate things to be recycled (like old tech) or just the effort it takes to rehome an item is EXACTLY what I needed to hear so that I know I am not alone when I feel like decluttering takes up a lot more of my energy than just the time it takes to go through things. More people need to be talking about sustainable decluttering and I am so glad you did!! Love your channel and can't wait for the next video!❤
For the first time ever, a cleaning video has inspired me to actually clean! Idk if it was the relaxed vibe of this video, but it certainly gave me the gentle nudge I needed to get going. Anyways, it was nice to see a humble human go through their space with sustainable decluttering and realistic cleaning goals in mind.
Shelbi! Hi 👋 Question: How did the toilet tab do compared to the DIY one you've previously used?! BTW, love your videos, I've been following you for years! Keep it up ✌️
Omg, you don't even know how helpful those are. Declutering is complicated, when you wanna find a good place for your trash or just things you no longer want. Thank you so much for keepig making such ones
I absolutely love decluttering videos! They’re so relaxing to me, but only when they aren’t the really giant influencer ones were the amount of stuff is just completely disastrously overwhelming that it actually makes me sick lol. But I’m so glad that you did one because I found the same philosophy that I keep up with my stuff but make sure that I don’t bring any more in than I get rid of. I love following the one in and one out lol now that I finally got a good balance. It’s gotten to the point now where my parents have asked me to help them the clutter stuff, and thankfully it’s a lot of stuff that can be given to teachers in need.
Oh my gosh! I literally just ordered my first blue land cleaning solution the other week and started using it. I absolutely love them! Since a concentrate is shipped rather than liquid, the truck is transporting something like 5% of the weight and the emissions from shipping goes waaaaaay down! So glad other people are talking about this company!
I keep decluttering on a regular basis. Helps not having a lot of clutter to begin with. Also I don't buy stuff but end up due to dumspter rescues, other people dumping stuff on me, guests, roommates and neighbors leaving behind stuff for me to deal with.
You can buy replacement lids for Pyrex. Anchor uses the same sizing, so it will work for them too. Also great for when the lids crack or wear out. The lids are recyclable too.
Best tip for getting stains off of pans: put a very thin layer of water on the bottom and cover with a lot of baking soda to create a paste. Then put the pan on the stove and boil off the water. Once all the water has boiled off the bottom of the pan will have powdery/flaky baking soda all over it. Carefully, while the baking soda is still hot, wipe it out. It takes way less elbow grease because the heat increases the effectiveness of the baking soda to dissolve stains.
Also next time you want to remove stains (or burnt on stuff), boil some water mixed with baking soda for a few minutes and it’ll soften them up! Easy way to get them removed, way less elbow greases necessary 😊
Thank you for addressing being conscious of what you're bringing into your home, not just decluttering and organizing after you bring stuff in. I know your channel is about eco-minimalism, so that should go without saying, but the way you said it during decluttering was perfect! Great video today, loved it!
I totally agree about decluttering. The constant decluttering that so many UA-camrs do, just to buy more stuff to replace it is not sustainable. After decluttering and switching to a more simple way of living, I think the key is to keep inventory low instead of consuming at the same rate as before. I still have to do small declutters every now and then (especially for kids' stuff that is outgrown) though.
Maybe I am behind the ball, but I would love a video on what do with the stuff you are decluttering. You touched a little on donating, and re-gifting, but do you have any advice on how to dispose electronic responsibly?
I’ve been using blueland for a while now, and my 3 favourite things so far have been the compostable sponges, the laundry booster (like oxy clean) and the bathroom cleaner. I love blueland!!
For pans, I use just a Swedish cloth and for those hard/burnt stains I use a Bamboo Pot & Pan Scraper by Bambu. It's on peace with the wild website for those who are in the UK and there is an eco friendly store in Columbia road flower market where they sell them too. I bought mine there only for £2 so defo worth it! I have not had to use anything else, it really scrapes everything off and doesn't scratch the pots because it's bamboo. I would 100% reccomended!!
I’ve seen people use toilet paper rolls to organize their cords. You could use the rolls from WGAC toilet paper after you use it instead of recycling them!
What I understand about memory tech is that it's risky to thrift them. They can contain viruses and stuff. If some tech is not available from thrift store, I buy them from outlets. In Finland we have some outlets that have used tech but the company has "cleaned" them.
If you have a foaming soap dispenser, you can mix Dr. Bronners and water in a 1:3 ratio and it's perfect. Less wasteful than any other liquid soap options tbh.
I ordered and received my Blueland products. So far the foaming hand soap is by far the best I’ve ever used and so easy. Thank you! Looking forward to laundry this weekend.
I see the cycle with some decluttering content i get the notion that they make space to fill again, or at least it happens that way once they have space to bring in more
Cleaning out cords and electronic things gives me anxiety bc I feel like it will take me forever.. but seeing how calmly you got it done gave me peace and motivation lol love this whole vid❤️
This video is so satisfying to watch 😍😍 Your sunscreen collection made me think of this VIDEO IDEA: For summer, Sustainable beach/pool essentials like sunscreens, sunglasses secondhand or from pela, cute sunhats from thred up, sustainable swimwear etc etc. I love your channel so much, it's taught me a lot!
I love this video, it made me feel so much better about having drawers in my house that terrify me but really need the decluttering love lol. Thanks for the relevant and helpful content as always!
The “stains” on the pans aren’t actually stains, it’s seasoning similar to a cast iron pan. By removing it, it means your food is more likely to stick to the bottom. Idk might be more of an issue for stainless steel idk
Your energy and everything you stand behind is so motivating to me and I love your channel ! Thank you for being a positive role model I rllly look up to you , you have helped me a lot !! :))))
Something I read about recently on CNet is using old cell phones as surveillance cameras and baby monitors. I can't imagine you two needing the latter, but setting one up of your old phones to monitor your front door could be useful and there are apparently plenty of apps available that let you monitor your old cell phone's camera from your current phone.
Hi Shelbie!! I think that white and brown sponge you showed at 21:34 is actually compostable. I have the same ones; the white part is cellulose (plant matter) and the brown part is coconut fiber. At least, the packaging said it was compostable so I seriously hope they are. 🤔 Thanks for taking the mindful approach with decluttering!!
Trust me my bundle of reusable cloths is more obnoxious I keep it in 2 baskets 1 for clean 1 for dirty (but rinsed and wrung) And they're not small baskets. And they're full. And they're made of old stained/torn and cut up tee shirts. And *underwear*. Mens cotton boxers, or at least my BFs, always rip, and so they get washed and become cleaning rags... and they're actually my favorite rags. Not mentioning theyre all different shapes, sizes, and colors.
I totally agree that we talk more about not buying stuff in the first place! I have decluttered SO many times in 22 years of marriage and for years couldn't figure out why there was always still so much left to declutter... until I realized it was because I kept BUYING THE STUFF! The realization made me sick. I am SO done with consumerism!
Yay, thanks for sharing this video. I love to organize and declutter but struggle with “maybe I can re-use this” or “i need to find out how to recycle this” or “where to donate or sell this” … I wish donation places, second hand stores have also that service of just go through your stuff and find the best way to dispose … but we all know most of the time just gets to the landfill 😔
My dad used to put leftovers in a food storage container THEN try to find the lid. The anger and swearing and craziness from him every night growing up totally has me u understanding the love you have for organizing that cabinet. Also my storage is not allowed in the cupboard without the lid on them 👍
Completely related/unrelated.....The first ad before your video started was for Pela Lomi. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. Then I was wondering if I could use your Pela case code, but it does not.... All good!
Public universities (and possibly other places as well) sometimes have a surplus sale website where you can purchase items that the university has 'surplused' (i.e. they aren't using the items anymore). I've never bought anything, but I'm told you can sometimes find hard drives, cameras, etc., plus it is usually inexpensive! Maybe that would be an option for secondhand digital storage solutions?
So, I’m in a transition phase were I’m going from plastic to glass containers. So far I haven’t bought any brand new glass containers and have been able to find a few second hand. The only thing is, these second hand containers either don’t have a lid, have been paired with the wrong lid or there is a crack in the lid that wasn’t caught before it got put on the shelf. So technically I went and bought new lids, I got a variety pack of those silicon stretch lids that can fit various shapes and sizes. So I don’t know if this makes me environmentally friendly or not. All I know if that people throw out an entire container if the lid breaks, even if the container itself is completely fine. And then those people just go out and buy a brand new set of containers. Thoughts?
I had the same, I had a bunch of containers that I bought cheaply and all the lids moulded 🙃. Now I just use them for fridge storage or with wax wraps. You do what you can do, can't be 100% all the time.
I think its also better if you are going to be keeping something for a really long time. I occasionally buy new things, but only if I will be able to use them for a really long time Edit:also the silicone stretch lids will be usable with so much more than just your containers
I got the BlueLand kit a while ago and I don't love the dishwasher/ laundry tablets... I just don't think they get the job done. I like the spray bottles and soap dispenser but I replace the soap by watering down liquid soaps that have a better fragrance. Amazing concept but I wasn't happy with BL execution
You do you on ceramic coated pots and pans but they're not very well liked by most people who cook a lot. They stain, dpn't clean well, they CAN chip, and they aren't the best with consistent heat or being truly nonstick. I HATE nonstick teflon pots and pans so they're definitely an upgrade (im health too) but I super prefer my cast iron for nonstick purposes and my stainless steel.
I was sitting on my bed looking for the loading case for my house of marley bluetooth headphones while watching this. Having your IDENTICAL one appear on screen at 20:00 seriously made my brain glitch for a second 😅
If you declutter stuff you aren't regularly using and then you one day have a random need for something you got rid of again, do you try to borrow from someone, or do you end up rebuying?
You might also want to look into carbon steel pans. Ceramic pans (or rather the coating) still wears down much faster than solid metal pans. Carbon steel lasts forever and can be seasoned like cast iron, but is much lighter.
I think a lot of people miss the intentions behind the KonMari method other than just decluttering.
i love that!
Her book didn't Do It For me. I like the process of the Nordic death purging where you look at something and think will my kids want this when I die?
Yeah the only thing that has worked for me is moving. That’s the only time where I look at something and the cost of dragging it with me to a new city.
😂 "that's me. I'm bleeding right now" love how real you two are
Was gonna comment the same 🤣
For your glass containers, I watched minimal mom and her idea was awesome for them, you store them all with the lid on so you don't have to go looking for it and you limit yourself to only what can fit in the cabinet so you don't start hording containers
I was going to say this too!
I've done that for years, even though mine are not as fancy. It makes sense for me to grab and go.
More videos on not buying things in the first place would be great. I’m currently doing a no-buy month and it’s so empowering. It really highlights the importance of choosing where your money goes.

I say it’s ok to take the first step and declutter just as long as you aren’t constantly replacing it with more stuff you don’t need! Happy for you!
I always gift my usable items to my Buy Nothing Group. I know it’s going to someone who can actually use it, instead of sitting in a thrift shop and possibly getting trashed. I’m lucky that my group is very large and active!
@@ourtubesocks Same here!! The stuff is always gone same day and I've put some random stuff on there lol
A fantastic recommendation I got from the Minimal Mom on UA-cam is to store food containers with the lids on. Game changer for me. It takes up more space, but how many containers do we really need?
I do the same thing. Otherwise I lose the lids.
Her content is so addicting. Welcome to the community.
Welcome to the addiction hope you learn new tips and hacks on your journey
The same thing happened to me when I discovered then last year! They are awesome!
I did the same thing..found their 2 channels about 3 weeks ago and have been watching non stop! Love em! So inspiring :)
Great minimalist tip I saw: store the boxes with the lids on! Easier and faster to take the boxes out and limit the number.
I tried this but I don't always use the lids to my pots at the same time. Personally I can't always deal with the extra executive function needed to take off a lid. We're all different and glad you found what works for you! 😃👍
How does that work? It would take up 20x the space.
This is great to know! I've been looking at their products. My partner has severe eczema on their hands and most hand soaps make their skin flare
I've gotten frustrated with friends whose approaches to cleaning and decluttering is too literally just throw it all away 😒

Anyways, it was nice to see a humble human go through their space with sustainable decluttering and realistic cleaning goals in mind.
I’d love to see future videos about acquiring the stuff you need for your kitchen in your usual eco-minimalist way.
Yes!!

omggg yessss I want "A Day in Tipee's Life" badly!!
I know this has nothing to do with the topic but I love the light freshness of your place and your plants. I'm addicted to plants too.
Madison “I am bleeding right now” made me laugh hahaha. Loved this video! Love decluttering and cleaning inspo
I absolutely love decluttering videos! We've used the Blueland powder dish soap for a year or so - it took some time to get used to (compared to liquid), but I love it!
Storing containers with the lids on is life-changing, give it a try!
Thank you for the pan recommendation! My husband just mentioned that he wanted to buy new ones and with this video I just saved research time, ha!

I've been in the cleaning mood too. Video request: more science-focused with lots of stats. (The eutrophication video is still one of my faves.)

Dial Soap just started offering refillable soap mixes! Larger brands are starting to notice.

I have decluttered SO many times in 22 years of marriage and for years couldn't figure out why there was always still so much left to declutter... until I realized it was because I kept BUYING THE STUFF! The realization made me sick. I am SO done with consumerism!
I would love one of those stickers! You should start giving them out again.
I use a steam mop and I spray the floor with a 10% bleach to 90% water solution as I have some health issues that make it dangerous if I get sick.
Great video! Watching📹 this while having a relaxing bath🛀 with a glass of Vegan white wine 🥂
I love your plants 🪴 ❤ your home is beautiful!!
I looove cleaning videos.
Haven’t started the vid but immediately YES LOVE THIS THANK you
Are the toilet brush heads interchangeable or do you need to purchase a new toilet brush when it can no longer be used?
Hey Sweetie! Thank you! I need to do this too! Hope you and Madison are staying warm!
I’m so excited about this video!! I love to Declutter but I feel guilty doing it
Yes! That time of year... you're so cute! Checking out blue-land today.
Thoughts?
It’s good that you bought everything you could second hand - you can’t be perfect ❤️
@@zoisapeers676 Thanks, I appreciate that.
I had the same, I had a bunch of containers that I bought cheaply and all the lids moulded 🙃. Now I just use them for fridge storage or with wax wraps.
You do what you can do, can't be 100% all the time.
@@mollyb8136 Thanks for that.
I think its also better if you are going to be keeping something for a really long time. I occasionally buy new things, but only if I will be able to use them for a really long time
Edit:also the silicone stretch lids will be usable with so much more than just your containers
I'd love to have your thoughts on Norwex and Grove Co.
Where did you get your mattress from? I’ve been wanting to invest in either an Avocado Green or Birch mattress. Thanks Shelbi!
OMG!! "That's me, I'm bleeding right now" Love you guys!!
Omg my husband and I did watched Whitney rewatching The Hills too. Her husband is so funny. We are watching them rewatch Laguna Beach now lol
Lol I rewatch with Whitney too 🤣
Is that just quartz colored contact paper on your coffee table?? I love it 😍 would like to elevate my coffee table where the top lifts also.
Love this! I need to know where did you get the organizer in your office? I really need something like that so much in my office.
I find this with lots of eco products that they just don't work very well!
I would love to see a blog from Tippy's point of view! 😂
Where did you get the baking soda cleaner for the pots?
Yes, I deep cleaned and organized our bedroom yesterday! What is it about this time of year?
I was sitting on my bed looking for the loading case for my house of marley bluetooth headphones while watching this. Having your IDENTICAL one appear on screen at 20:00 seriously made my brain glitch for a second 😅
If you declutter stuff you aren't regularly using and then you one day have a random need for something you got rid of again, do you try to borrow from someone, or do you end up rebuying?
Try the pink suff
What brand of glass food storage do you use with the bamboo lids?
Can you make a whole video reviewing your pans??
OMG CODENAMES IS SUCH AS GOOD GAME
WHAT?? i love taboo!
You can organize the cables in the drawer by putting them in old cardboard toilet paper rolls. That way they don't get tangled!
I was making my own cleaner with vinegar and orange peels. But my husband doesn't like the smell 🤣 been looking for a new cleaner!
I use toilet rolls to keep my cables organized and you can write on them what the cables are 😅
How did you like the blue land toilet tabs?
Love those stickers!!!
Do you have to re season your ceramic pots like cast iron? Also do you know if they are lighter or heavier than cast iron pots and pans?
I belive they are lighter. And you don't have to season it, seasoning is meant to prevent rusting which is not an issue with ceramic :)
Sounds like I'm gonna need to get me a set, LOL
You might also want to look into carbon steel pans. Ceramic pans (or rather the coating) still wears down much faster than solid metal pans. Carbon steel lasts forever and can be seasoned like cast iron, but is much lighter.
