  • Guildford Cathedral Choir, directed by Barry Rose:
Evensong at Guildford Cathedral, 23 January 1969:
(Originally published by Sterhold & Hopkins in 1934, this is the second of Charles Wood’s two settings in E flat major. Setting No. 1 can be found on ArchivesofSound at • Magnificat in E flat: ... and • Nunc dimittis in E fla... )
My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden.
For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name.
And his mercy is on them that fear him, throughout all generations.
He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.
He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away.
He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.
    GLORIA
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people.
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
    GLORIA

I adore this! Sang it today with my choir . I just love the Gloria it’s a cracking sing! It makes me feel nostalgic as sang it a lot at university . Wood is really one of my favourite choral composers. Lovely recording !

It's a relatively unknown little gem.

I'd forgotten how good this setting is - starts humdrum but just gets better and better. I've never met or even seen him but Barry Rose was a near legendary figure when I was growing up singing in the late 80s and early 90s and these recordings are more than justifying that reputation: from Gibbons to Gardiner it's hair-raising stuff, just outstanding musicality - and that's before you even think about the quality of training. Thank you so much for making it available - keep going!

Wonderful recording! This is the most beautiful setting of the Gloria Patri that I’ve ever heard or sung. The build to the chord on the “world without end” is simply transcendent.

The least meek "meeK" I have ever heard. Tremendous.

Quite so - after all, they were being exalted...and exulted!
