    About Agandaur, I don’t think he needs to be changed for change’s sake. If he’s just going to be replaced with another Black Numenorean lieutenant sent by Sauron, that can barely be considered replacing him with an original character- it’s more of a glorified rename. As is, having him is a nice reference to another adaptation.
    That said, I could see an argument to exclude him, on the basis that including any lore created outside of either canon or the films is a problematic slippery slope- there’s a vast amount of original lore that’s been created for various adaptations, most of it contradictory and some of it very controversial.

      I too would prefer if he was kept in. Seeing him as the faction leader is one of the things that got me interested in the mod in the first place. It would just be disappointing to see Angmar being lead by someone else after knowing he was the faction leader. Especially if he is going to be replaced by a Not-Agandaur who follows all the same themes.

    It would be good to see some element of corrupted Arnorian Dunedain outlaws in the faction. It fits with the Tolkien theme of men being easily corrupted, and speaks to the civil war that destroyed Arnor. They could be the anti-Arnor, the "true Arnor oppressed by false kings" from their perspective.
    I'd also like to see Ered Luin neutral with Angmar from the start - they should begin as having a purely mercantile focus until Sauron's choice pushes them into good or evil. That gives Angmar some breathing space, puts their focus on their true Dunedain enemies and fits with the theme of isolationist and greedy Dwarves.

    • @Laureasairon
      @Laureasairon 4 роки тому +16

      I disagree with your opinion about the "corrupt Arnorians" due to the following:
      1.) The Dunedain who founded Arnor and Gondor were all Faithful, meaning they all accepted Elendil and his descendants as leaders and kings, thus agreeing to kingship.
      2.) If you were to take Rhudaur as a base for the "corrupt Dunedain", it would not work because the Dunedain there were always few and died out pretty early on in the split of Arnor.
      Besides you already get Temple Wards bodyguard and Hunvorn the wraith, both units Numenorean in origin (admittedly they are a unique BG and a single general, however this correspond to the fact that there were few and currently are even less of the once mighty Dunedain).

    • @Petter1900

    I have a suggestion: How about giving this faction similar possibility than Northern Dunedain in the way that once you develop this faction far enough and have played with it well enough, it stops using the prefix "remnants of" and its name will therefore be merely Angmar. Also, upon being called Angmar, it will get some benefits just like Northern Dunedain will get once they reorganize their faction into Arnor. Perhaps even more formidable units? Black Numenoreans starting to emigrate to Angmar? Something else?

  • @rosc222
    @rosc222 4 роки тому +7

    Honestly getting rid of the upkeep for the barrow wights is a good idea, since Angmar currently has a very difficult early game, so giving them a strong late game if they can secure the barrows creates a novel and interesting campaign strategy where you hunker down until you can start blitzing barrows to get your super units with which you can finally turn the tide against your otherwise vastly superior opponents. From a balance perspective the Wight's reliance on defense skill to not die makes them easy to counter with arrows, so it will still take skill to use them effectively.
    Beyond that it would also be thematically interesting to have a faction that leans into wraiths hard would be unique and interesting, as no other faction does that and if any faction should it is Angmar.

    not going to lie, I understand making your own lore for the games, and so far you've done quite well for yourselves, spectacular, in fact. That being said, I don't mind all that much that agandaur is replaced/removed with a different character, but I absolutely love the name that he has. it rolls off the tongue, and just sounds quite epic. Question, would you make a script for the fall of barad heleg in the event of sauron's demise, since the witch king would die as well. also, would you consider perhaps changing the carn dum map to include a kind of lighting effect for the barad heleg in the carn dum map?
    Love the faction, hell of a fight to do as the northern dunedain.

    I've used hillmen to overwhelm small bands of much stronger Dunedain rangers. They have a very large unit size, meaning they can overwhelm small units that nominally have a much larger stat value. 19 defence and 11 attack isn't worth much when you're constantly getting staggered by three axes to your one sword.
    Wargs are a life-saver in the early game. They take a bit of micromanagement, but they can decimate enemy infantry with their ranged attacks and their charge is extremely dangerous when it hits from the rear or hits archers that are busy shooting or caught in skirmish mode. Send them into battle early to disrupt enemy formations; that way, you'll also get most of them back as units that fall first in the battle are the ones who recover from their injuries.
    The starting bodyguard units are excellent. You'll be relying on your faction leader and his Numenoreans to cut a swathe through all of the independent villages, and he remains your main assault unit. The barrow wights lend offensive punch, but they can be surprisingly fragile and have a small unit size. They're often best used in conjunction with your other units, leading Rhudaur's soldiers into battle as a vanguard rather than operating out on their own. They're very vulnerable to being shot by archers and need to be protected from this, but if you can get them past the enemy barrage, they're great for pushing into the middle of enemy skirmisher and archer formations and killing them quickly to stop them from firing in melee (something only the AI can do it seems, much to my annoyance). This is a good way to stop AI archers from decimating your attacking soldiers with point blank arrow or, worse, javelin fire.
    This is just from my experiences in the very early game. I managed to cut my way through to Deadman's Dyke, but we'll see if I can hold it and take the rest of Eriador.

      As often stated, it is hard to compare the factions in difficulty without any other input. The difficulty highly depends on what you do. Fo example if you attack every neighbour as an "easy" faction, the campaign is going to be hard. On the contrary, if you employ some cheeky diplomacy and strategies such as rushing and bribing neutral faction into war with your enemies even the hardest faction becomes mediocre in difficulty.

    About barrow wights. You can train them in Carn Dum, which makes them accessible before the barracks event. Perfect anti AP killers those wights. I had around 4-5 units pre barracks event, saved my ass from the ND and Ered Luin. Their up keep did limit their use for only dire situations, which felt like a fair game mechanic due to them being quite OP in a players hands.

    Based on some of the bugs you have mentioned and some of the other issues that have popped up like Angmar's economy being a bit nerfed it may be worth releasing a version 4.6 that fixes the bugs and adjusts the balance of the campaign a bit. V5 should definitely be saved for some big changes like removing the barracks event.
    I'm still a little wary of removing the barracks event only because certain factions really rely on it for some measure of parity, particularly the wild men factions. Adjusting availability and cost may make my concerns unwarranted though.

    Playing an Angmar campaign currently and it is way easier than Gondor which was also a 4.
    I tired the gondor campaign 4 times before I actually played a campaign that won. That gondor victory was also only possible with toggle fow, exploiting the bridge cheese as Osgiliath so you are not ever attacked there and rushing harad and selling the provinces to Khand and the AA and moving onto the next poorly defender harad city. I dont think i could ever beat the gondor campaign without cheesing or straight up cheating.
    Loved the campaign overview though, another superb video as per usual!!

    I went and took Deadmans Dike and Imladris within the first 20 turns, to see if it was possible (it very much is) i got a message saying the Witch king was leaving Mordor, but it took atleast 15-20 turns for him to actually arive, making the difficulty of rushing both Imladris and Deadmans dike unrewarding, as you wouldn't be able to use his insane body guard to press your advantage early game. Just a note.

    I played angmar on version 2.2 and I just started a new campaign with them on 4.5. Back then I found the campaign rlly difficult till the barracks event. And right now on version 4.5 the start of the campaign is again a big challenge. Bankrupt which means I have to spare my troops the best I can and also making smart choices to where to move. Northern dunedain is also rlly hard but at least you have great archers that do a lot for you. With angmar by best tactic is having basically 1 army only and use my generals the best I can to try to outclass the enemy and to get free units cause they replenish. Get some wargs to hunt down the enemy and to charge and run away. But this is what makes the game fun, to have a challenge. Factions such as the high elves make the campaign extremely easy and therefore not that enjoyable. Your archers simply destroy the enemy. Even bankrupt it s not that bad with elves.

    You could justify the high upkeep of the Barrow-wights as the cost of the materials that fuel the magic that maintains them. Say that without these magicks hey would either crumble to dust or would turn against you.
    Not sure how lore friendly that explanation would be but, as you said, DaC kinda build its own lore now.

    About the Barrow-wight upkeep, I think them being upkeep free is cool, BUT, from a realism perspective, maybe the rest of your army doesnt really like camping with barrow-wights (because who would), so to offset the game breakyness maybe having them in your army (whilst being 0 upkeep themselves) it increases the upkeep of other units by 5-10%? Units that are frightened/who dislike camping with their neighboors are probably less productive or efficient, making the whole camp run more sluggishly and therefore increasing upkeep costs.

    zero upkeep on barrow wrights would also, mildly help early game economy since you get two units of them at game start...
    which in my opinion, which is of QUESTIONABLE VALUE, is a good thing considering I have no clue HOW to play Angmar's early game without doing this thing called dying of boredom...
    or going bankrupt, but having fun. Accidental early game eco nerf hit them rather hard... not that losing upkeep on two units is gonna help much, but as far as I'm concerned two less units to pay for might as well be a solid gold and gemstone covered chest full of gold, gemstones, and other things of value.
    in fact, that change with the argument you made makes SO MUCH sense I just might go an make a small edit in me game's files.
