  • In this canoe video, we take a look at river hazards and safety on the water while canoeing-as part of your canoeing technique, you should be able to judge how a water level will impact your trip, how to identify strainers, foot entrapments and more, all of which are touched on in this video.

Good video! 1. Knowing the river and your own skill level is vital. 2. Strainers are deadly - carry around them if they block the whole river. 3. Foot entrapment is dangerous - don’t try to stand up in moving water! 4. I would add COLD - hypothermia is possible if you are not dressed for getting wet. Wool and some synthetic fabrics such as fleece (although environmentally bad) will keep you warm while wet. Wear or bring a wind-proof layer over the wool. Bring extra dry clothing in case of an upset and or a long wait at the take-out. Jeans are the worst for protection from cold! 5. Don’t go alone. 6. Read your guide books for safety practices and your specific river hazard.

Probably 20 Years ago I got my foot stuck in tree roots while pulling a raft a on a currentless river at when 2 foot of calm water became 5 foot of rushing water around a bend. I worked it lose but swallowed some water. Yikes! These days I'm sober and the paddling is a tad bit more extreme but I take safety seriously.

Foot entrapments are definitely not one of the most common forms of death
