I never owned a terracotta pot. I planted my plant and never thought of soaking it. My plant was dry after 3 days. Im going to keep a eye on it until it absorb what it needs. Great video.
It's the end of the season where i live and I just went in search of some bigger pots, The few that were left on the shelves were mostly cracked and bone dry, I eventually found the 3 i needed. and thought to myself, I should soak them, but came looking to see if that was a good idea. and here I am!! lol thanks so much!
Hi Adam, I'm enjoying your channel and thanks for getting the message out there that it is really important to soak terra cotta before using it. Cheers from Ann in Nova Scotia.
Thank you, i need to do this, after all we need iur plants to help us breathe, I also learned a trick for watering, if you live some where you have city water, put your water in something overnight the chemicals discipate they put in it clean go away, now i do that all time for my plants and animals.
Question: is this soaking method only for new terracota pots? I need to transplant many plants that I will move indoors and I have used most of the pots before in other plants in the past. I can recall washing them with soap and then bleach and letting them soak in clean water as a rinse end step and to remove any absorbed bleach; all these steps because of my older potted plants have been contaminated with silver fungus and they were all discarded. Do I still need to soak them after 3 years of not using them in plants? BTW the plants I’m repotting in terracota pots all sizes are mostly perennials with bulbs and tubers that can get root rot if they are over watered. I just want to make sure I don’t have to spend 20-30 minutes soaking one by one as I can not soak all pots together or transplant all of my plants at once. Thank you in advance.
People who had something negative to say about this, are likely the same people who think all plants need & drink the same amount of water & need the same amount of shade/sun. Plants are all different!! 😂😂 Some plants thrive in drier environments, others it’s detrimental to. If their cactus’ survived fine without extra watering in dry terracotta… well… great!! 😂🙌 People complaining about “wasting water” soaking the pots too, but don’t consider it “wasting water” when they have to water their plants 4x more often??? SMH 😂😂 You really can’t please some people. Some just want any excuse to complain about something 😂😂 Also, soaking the pots help make them less brittle too, especially while you’re working/planting in them. I’ve heard soaking overnight is best but I’ve never tried the 15/30min thing so can’t personally say if one worked better than the other from experience. Thank you so much for the video!! Greatly explained 💜💜💜
Agreed. Not only that but they probably washed their pots and scrubbed them under running water for a long time. Which would have wasted so much more water AND hydrated the pot.
@@Goldphool Yes, that’s a very good point!! I think some people just have a need to complain about something and/or tell someone they’re “wrong”, without actually thinking about it logically first. 💜💜💜
I realised that I have seen my mom do it before and just searched for this and found this video! I absolutely agree with you on the reasons for doing this.
I’ve already soaked, but I’m curious as to won’t the pot take the plants water again after once the pot’s dried up or does it not dry up after a while?
Terra cotta is porous, allowing air to flow through the soil, but only when it’s really dehydrated will it steal water from the plant. Since new terra cotta is extremely dry, a pre soak will make it behave normally.
The plant will usually slip out from the pot easily when just slightly moist. However, sometimes it’s necessary to break the pot if the plant is very very rootbound.
Does anyone know how I can avoid dampening off with my small terracotta pots? The hole in the bottom of some is too small to let water in, but I seem to kill all my young plants and seedlings whenever I water from the top. With seedlings I’ve learned to only water from the bottom for 30-60 seconds otherwise it just becomes saturated but I’m not sure what to do with these little pots that I can’t bottom water
Terra cotta shouldn’t be stored below freezing temps or else you will get cracking…if you must then you could try bubble wrap but it’s best to store in a garage or indoors
Absolutely not necessary. I have 3 plants in terracotta pots and never soaked them before I potted my plants into them and I’ve never had an issue. Just wait for your soils to dry out and water like you normally would or when you pot it just water your plant generously
Not too sure what went wrong…that might have happened even without soaking as mold on clay is common. I have not experienced this yet, but I hear scrubbing with vinegar gets rid of the mold.
I have new terracotta pots bought month ago and just check today some of the pot are growing mold that I really hate it. But if i use vinegar after a week the mold will grow up again.
So I come across this video after I’ve already potted my Fiddle Leaf Fig 🤦🏾♂️… I didn’t even know what a terracotta pot was. I just always loved how they look. So I got a pot and a saucer for my plant. I filled the saucer with about 4 bottles of water and about an hour later the water was leaking onto my floor lol. And some of it was even absorbed by the pot. Which led me to learning all of this 😂

Cool, thank you for this suggestion. It makes a lot of sense as the pots are super dry.
Thank you soo much. I have two plants that have not grown in over a year and that’s because the terra cotta was stealing wow 🤩

I’ve never soaked a terracotta pot before! I’ll have to try it now! 👌🏼🙏🏼
Same, here.
But makes perfect sense to hydrate them prior to planting.
Glad I happened to stumble by here, thanks...
@@davestelling Happy u learned something new :)
Interesting, I never knew about this, but it makes perfect sense. Thank you for the helpful tip!

Ok this was all of the helpful but can you also do your skincare routine? Because you literally have * no pores*
Great presentation very thorough, Thank you!
Very good vídeo and great information ❤️ Some habits make a difference!!!!
Thank you!! Yes, for sure! ☺️🪴

Thanks Adam. Really appreciate your useful content.
Do you soak the saucer also? I did it with my saucer and the bottom feels moist for a while. Not dripping wet, just feel moist to the touch.
So good share!
That was really helpful thank you so much 😊

Thanks, I was wondering the same
Thank you 😊 useful to know
How do you take plants out of a terracotta plant without breaking the pot or damage the plants ?
The plant will usually slip out from the pot easily when just slightly moist. However, sometimes it’s necessary to break the pot if the plant is very very rootbound.
my terra cotta grows fuzzy stuff i think it’s mold, is there a way to stop that? or is it normal with terra cotta
You can remove mold from the pot by spraying with half water, half white vinegar in a spray bottle. If there’s a lot id also scrub with a sponge!
Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️❤️❤️
What if you paint your pots? Do you soak before you paint, or after?

How do you prevent terracotta from cracking in winter?

I wet mine beforehand and it began to grow mold on the outside. What could have wrong?

Try scrubbing with cinnamon or spraying with a copper spray
