- hey guys!!! sorry i've been for so long. i just needed some recharge time after school lol.
as someone whose watched so many college advice videos, they always seemed like perfect applicants. well, spoiler alert, i wasn't that "perfect applicant."
hopefully this video helps any of you guys who have the same struggle of not having a "spike." there's no perfect way to craft your application! for me, i found taking a more personal framework would work to my advantage and i guess it worked out.

As a college graduate, I just want to say to everyone who is applying to colleges right now: hang in there. I remember feeling the exact same way when I was applying to colleges. I felt so inadequate and like a failure and just thinking about applying to colleges stressed me out. I felt like no matter how hard I tried, I could never reach the expectations put on me or that I put on myself. I didn’t know what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go and just felt so lost the entire first half of senior year. To anyone who is feeling this way right now, I want to say to trust in yourself and trust that it will all be ok in the end. I know right now it is hard to imagine that, but in time, things will improve and get better. You’ve all got this and I believe in all of you! 💕💕

when you bring something up i am always going back and forth between ‘my topic is perfect’ and ‘oh god i need to change it immediately’ 😂
how would you recommend writing about personal growth / those emotional achievements without coming off as “bragging”? i totally agree with you btw !! i think humility is so important in these essays, but i want to really highlight my highschool accomplishments in my extracurriculars + show penn that i‘m incredibly qualified for their school without seeming like i have some sort of superiority complex ? idk if that makes sense
i mean i think if you have really good accomplishments, there’s nothing wrong with highlighting it in your essay. i just wouldn’t over exaggerate your accomplishments because i think it is really easy to make it sound craggy at that point. also, i would recommend you don’t write about the accomplishments and describe it as much as you talk about the actual personal journey/ growth that you experienced in the process of achieving said goal. i think the essay has to be personal and it’s hard to make it personal if you just talk about an achievement that can apply to other people.

@@bibliophile7557 Yeah I know what you mean. I will say though, I've definitely seen some people with weaker stats get in with a marvelous essay. Now thats all we can really focus on.
I started high school out of the US, and in that country they emphasized the aspect of being well-rounded to explore what you like later. This year I'm a rising senior in the US and hearing college requirements made me feel so mediocre and doubt everything. Thank you for the video it really helped😊

To anyone who is reading this. Don’t ever settle for mediocrity, even if you’re in you’re junior year such as myself with little to no extra curricular experience, go out there and push yourself to attend more extra curricular clubs, and when it comes to grades, don’t sleep walk through life hoping for the best, actually put in the effort to perfecting your grades, if you have time to socialise on weekends then you sure as hell have time to perfect your academic performance. The truth is, mediocre people simply don’t stand a chance at applying to top unis.

Ok so i have a few mediocre things i’m interested in which are i enjoy writing poetry/creative stories, coding, and learning/playing instruments. Do you think that i could create a spike of “creating things” (like i enjoy making new things that bring me joy, like science fair projects and new websites/apps and music and poetry) obviously that would not be a traditional spike, but it is true to who i am. The only thing is i haven’t won that many awards for this “spike” so i dont know if this is a good one.
i don’t think that would necessarily constitute as a spike but like i said in the video, i don’t think you need a spike. what you mention are great activities that fit a “create” narrative and i think it can be a really compelling one!

I'm an international student from tunisia ( north Africa) and this year I'm gonna be attending 4th year of highschool which is the equivalent of 12th grade in the us I think ( last year ) and lowkey i have NO extra-curriculars. The environment of schools in tunisia is just about going to class getting good enough grades and then going home (btw the grading system is on 20 and I'm averaging 16/17 which is quite good here). Anyways I'm looking forward to studying in the us and getting financial aid (even though I'm really late) I'm going to try my best. I haven't taken any form of test(SAT/TOEFL) or anything yet, but I'm going to. I'm also looking for clubs to join and stuff so I can put as "extra-curriculars", one of the things that I'm thinking I can right about on a personal level in my essays is how "making weird sounds with my mouth" A.K.A beatboxing has helped me get out of the shell of being an introvert and not speaking much. Especially that always my mom would yell at me because I annoy her with the sounds 😂 (even though I'm no where near a great beatboxer xD)

maybe you could explain the extra-curricular situation in tunisia in the additional information section of your application. also, if you really want to make your essay about beatboxing, go ahead and do it! while having good grades isn't everything, it helps, so you definitely have a chance. good luck!

would writing an essay about my love for my little brother be a good idea? i became sort of a “second mother” to him because i was 12 when he was born and took upon myself all of his responsibilities, and it marked the growth from me being irresponsible and concerned with friendships to being self-fulfilling and introspective. i haven’t really seen anybody talk about this kind of essay so is it okay?
yeah that sounds like a great idea! keep in mind, i honestly think you can write about almost anything. its the way you write it that counts
You can also write how that the love and responsibilities for your little brother led to your interest in what you want to major in.

that was one of my worries freshman yr bc i took alg 1 too. i just ended up taking 2 DE math classes at a local college and now im in ap calc bc as a senior (but im applying engineering so I like had to). If ur applying bio, i dont think you should be too worried about that, but if you want peace of mind or genuinely enjoy math, i encourage you to take summer classes to get you where you want to be.

Hey so I really think you should write about the 1 bedroom apartment story because it’s definitely unique and also because many people are going to write about protests and COVID, even though it is a good topic but everyone might write about it. Lastly personal essays are unique to each person so writing about 1 bedroom will showcase your true personality.

I agree with the 1-bedroom apartment. You should apply through Questbridge because it really allows you to highlight the adversity you faced as a low-income student. The application is due September 29th. Good luck😊
