49:16 Aww, she's so excited that he thinks she put her argument well. I love watching people get excited when he compliments or agrees with them. I saw one guy give a victory fist/little happy wiggle when Richard said he asked a very interesting question and looked genuinely enthusiastic about answering it.

One advantage of a religion that believes in an afterlife with rewards is that it gives hope to us to make things better here and now.
Science shows just how important hope can be to a living organism. Mice were placed in two large steel tanks half filled with water. One tank had a couple of long sticks leading to the top of the tank, the other tank had none.
Guess which tank contained the mice who were still swimming an hour later and which tank the mice gave up and drowned in? Hope is vital.

Did anyone else think that the Book of Mormon sounded like it should have been spoken by the guy from Monty Python who spake of the Holy Hand Grenade?

Don't worry Christians, someone turned the bandwidth down on this one so now nobody gets to play.

I had the good fortune to know Richard when we were each young scientists, loving the field of ethology. Here is something that others so often get wrong. Richard is a deeply kind man. Of course he is brilliant, but that is not what I am saying here. He is a caring, loving human being. If we cannot allow folks with whom we agree or disagree to have their place on the stage we are making a terrible mistake. I like this fellow.

Very relevant with the Easter proclamations by politicians and clergy. As the U.S. (perhaps) sees the error in allowing religion into politics, the UK is in danger of going the other way.

now, i'm not that familiar with teilhard, having read 'the phenom of man' many years ago, but i respect his views as i understand and had come to interpret it - that the biological point of singularity, or the END of evolution, is god. that an important element of evolution is compression and convergence and that this compression/convergence somehow will stop and lead to another form.

Don't get down on its' level, it'll beat you with millenia of experience in saying the same shit over and over again and burning anyone who says otherwise alive.

Richard Dawkins is a evolutionary biologist, so medical research in that. Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a Astrophysicist, no medical research there. and Stephen Hawking is a theoretical physicist, also no medical research there. Theres different sciences learn them. They contribute something entirely different than Medical Research. They provide an understanding of the world and universe we inhabit.

I hate when people think various countries were atheist. They cannot possibly know that in any way. The COUNTRY didn't have a religion but the PEOPLE may have regardless of legality. At least understand something before you try to rant about how bad it is.

I feel I should point out that although the majority of you are religious in some way, it's the smaller atheist community that does most of the scientific discovery and most of the scientific community (roughly 98%) rejects the idea of god and variations of such a being :)
Sooooo basically your by the numbers idea leaves a lot to be desired, like actual research and the proof to back it up :)

Why so angry Angela? Could it be that you have invested a large percent of your life on Religion? Do you feel like your all in on a game of poker and can't accept the fact that your not winning?

Nearly all Western Leaders of the Last 250 years have been Christian and Tens of Millions have died due to their decisions and the battles they Fought. By the reasoning You use against Atheists that makes all Christianity responsible for all those deaths ans suffering. Just b/c it was opposing Army's and Ideology's it does not make them any less precious.

How the Theism of Newton led to his brilliant genius: First, his Theistic belief elevated his mind above the earth to the perspective of the heavens. Second, his belief enabled him to see himself as a child exploring the creation of his Heavenly Father ("a child on the sea shore"). Third, his Theism and belief in angels allowed him to tap into higher dimensions of intelligence unknown by material atheists.
Sadly atheists are still stuck on stupid.

teilhard posits a proof of a god, except that this god is the result of the evolution of man or whatever intelligent life there is in the universe(s), not jesus.
so, sorry richard, unless there is a logical argument against this, i remain a theist. like teilhard, i believe in the human race.
