The CW is adapting DC Comics seminal crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. This video takes a look at the various Crisis stories in DC Comics which have been running since the 60s. The word "crisis" in a title in DC Comics tends to imply an epic event with changes to their ongoing comics.

Morrison uses string theory at the end. Essentially, in it's smallest form, everything is energy that vibrates as sort of strings of energy. When all of reality collapses, it's quiet enough that Superman can see the vibrations that make up what little is left of Darkseid. He uses vibrations to disrupt what's left of Darkseid and ends him once and for all. Singing is just his method of delivering those vibrations, since "Darkseid always hated music". Simple!
Edit: By the way, this is foreshadowed when M-theory is mentioned earlier in the story to talk about alternate dimensions.
In all politeness, friend: Infinite Crisis resulted in a multiverse with 52 earths and a weekly miniseries called 52. It was NOT A HARD REBOOT. It was NOT THE NEW 52. That came later.

I think the subtext of Infinite Crisis, as seen through Superboy Prime, is that nostalgia can be toxic. It highlights how things might have seemed like they were better in the ol' days than they are now, but they're really not as different as you would think.
Yet, bringing back the multiverse kind of conflicts the message. Infinite Crisis was a huge let down and made me quit comics.
Let's keep it real: Infinite Crisis seemed like it was a bunch of writers and editors not on the same page. Somehow, it was coherent but the ending tells you there was no clear direction other than "hey, make sure when can keep the suckers around for our 52 weekly book".

I'm a Marvel fan, have been for years but have to say kudos to DC for their *"Crisis"* saga in 1985. This was on the back of Marvel's 12 issuse run of *"Secret Wars,"* which was a big success for Marvel between 1984-85 and ran through several Marvel titles. I never knew *"Crisis"* started decades beforehand. Thanks for the history lesson, Chris.
But it’s not just “Crisis in title” events that count as crises for DC. Look at Blackest Night, Flashpoint, and Convergence. All served the function of Crisis events despite not using the word in their title.

Superboy-Prime isn't the original Superboy, he's the one from Prime-Earth where all the heroes are fictitious

yeah I think Superboy was retconned so Clark became Superman after College and so Supberboy turned out being from a Pocket dimension from I think Legion and gave his life to save.. someone or everything. I can't remember.
Infinite Crisis is about how nostalgia affects stories. In the story, the Golden-age heroes look upon their successors in their pocket dimension and scrutinize how different it is. They then decide to bring back how things were (i.e. the Multiverse). The Golden age heroes represent fans who liked how the Universe was before, and it shows how that nostalgia can be destructive.
Superboy Prime's attempt to kill Conner Kent represents how old readers tend to dislike new characters replacing the roles of old characters. Earth-2 Superman trying to save Earth-2 Lois represents how old school readers want to hold on to what they like despite the fact that the thing they like will eventually fade away. Alexander Luthor's quest for the perfect world represents the lengths that fans will go to get the Universe exactly how they want it to be. When Alexander Luthor betrayed Earth-2 Superman, it represents how nostalgia can be exploited for the benefit of others.
To hit the nail on the head, when the Golden age heroes get their Multiverse back, it's a shadow of its former self, and, in Earth-2 Superman's case, it didn't bring back what he wanted. Because they were blinded by nostalgia, they turned into what they were fighting against: heroes who have lost their way.
Alternatively, it also critiques the writers for not honoring the old stuff and that it should be kept in mind. This is shown in Wonder Woman's conversation with her Earth-2 counterpart. When she received the Invisible Jet, it represented how we shouldn't be ashamed of what came before.
Overall, the message is that nostalgia is important. It reminds us who our characters are. However, nostalgia can be destructive and turn our heroes into something we don't want them to be.

Crisis on Infinitely Earths is my favorite comic of all time! I like the idea of multiple versions of every DC hero fathomable teaming up to take down the ultimate bad guy. Plus, I've always been a fan of parallel universe stories in pretty much any kind of media, so this scratches that itch.
I'm going into the crossover episodes with no real expectations. I'm not expecting a frame by frame adaptation but as long as they keep with the general spirit of the comic, I'll be happy. I'm curious to see what surprises they might pull out. You can't bring on all of these guest stars and expect that they don't have at least one good ace up their sleeve when it comes to surprises.
And I just realized my typo. I meant to say Infinite Earths, not Infinitely Earths.
Chris, another good video. The Miracle Machine at the end of Final Crisis comes from Jim Shooter's run on Legion of Super-Heroes (Adventure Comics) back in the late 1960's. It was created by the alien race The Controllers.

Great episode. The convoluted history of DC and it's heroes, including the Charlton and Fawcett characters, make for a great read. I would love a detailed documentary on this. In thirteen minutes, you've done a stellar job!

This was a pretty neat look at all the crises. Strangely enough, one of the first DC comics I really remember reading was Final Crisis back in high school. Only recently read CoIE and boy that was a trip. There's so much stuff to cover with these books but you did a good job. Thanks for the video!
Still can't believe the DC TV shows go to so many big cross over events and the DC movies are barely have that much of a shared continuity any more
Well maybe if DC had a better plan for their cinematic universe (Like Marvel).
Put together a team of filmmakers who actually knew what The Hell they were doing when it came to crossover film events.
And would get a person like Marvel's Kevin Feige to layout a roadmap.
We would have seen more of a shared cinematic continuity as opposed their being no shared continuity as of right now.

Side note: His run on Animal Man was a really nice follow-up to Crisis on Infinite Earths and is the best fourth-wall-breaking comic I think ever written.

"Hawkman didn't get his own book until 1989". Yes he did! There was a 17 issue Hawkman series in 1986-87, which started right after Crisis! The '89 reboot had absolutely nothing to do with Crisis!
cool video. I think it's a little reductive to pass over Flashpoint, despite not having the word "Crisis" in the title, it was certainly a Crisis-level event. (And as you say, more than Identity or Final Crises)

I was not that big of a DC fan when I was a kid other than a few of their characters until I read the Crisis on Infinite Earths. It was amazing and really got me interested in DC for a while after that.
I don't understand Heroes in Crisis, it has to say something but there are so many decisions made I don't understand. Like either Dan Didio or Tom King saying:„ Oh yeah we decided that Wally West should be killed off (or better should be used to be problem character of the story), because every Crisis a Flash has to go“ I believe I heard that some plans for the series were changed midway through and it really sounds legit
I could be wrong, but the Tales from the Dark Multiverse comics mention a new crisis on the horizon. Each story is of a potential character who may be a part of said crisis.

Good overview Chris. Just a couple of notes for the more pedantic amongst us - the Superboy-turned-villain in the Infinite Crisis event is not the original Superboy from the Silver Age Earth One continuity but rather a Superboy from a version of Earth that was essentially an analogue of the "real" world, canonically known as Earth-Prime. It did not feature any other DC heroes apart from Superboy. Also, I would question your assertion that Infinite Crisis segued into the New52 directly as the Final Crisis event you reference occurred after IC and the N52 reboot is a result of Dr. Manhattan's interference with the re-coalescence of the DCU following Flashpoint as he spotted a weakness in the fabric of reality and sought to create a universe more in line with his outlook on things, including Superman, who became the more alienated, tragic, armoured version of himself for the next several years until the Rebirth era.

crisis on infinite earths (paragons rising) released in 2020 is like the companion piece to the crisis on infinite earths tv crossover event.
watch the tv crossover event first, then read the comic.
i only recently found out they did this and makes much more sense now.

Zero Hour is still my favorite 90s event. Maybe because it was the first one I read after starting reading comics with Death of Superman in 1993, or maybe because Hal actually destroys the entire DC universe during the event. Many have tried, but few times has this actually happened. And it was just a human who did it. I also like the parallel with Parallax and the story of Lucifer to tear down creation and remake it according to his own ideas. Its also like the characters tried to usurp control from the writers, which is really cool in a meta sense.
Infinite Crisis doesn't make Kal-L a villain, only misguided. He realizes his mistake in the end. Alex Luthor was the truest villain, and we can chalk that up to the Luthor genes. He corrupted Superboy Prime, and even he didn't go full villain until he fought the Teen Titans in the main universe. Lois stayed good til her death, so I think it's a mischaracterization to say that they became the villains.
Final Crisis needs to be viewed through the Morrison lens, as it happens across multiple levels of reality at once. Superman Beyond is the whole conflict occuring on a higher plane of existence, with Superman piloting a giant robot to fight the vampire Monitor Mandrakk. On Earth plane, it's actually Batman who solves Orion's murder and shoots Darkseid with a Radion bullet, and Darkseid falls backwards through time and his passing makes a hole in reality, which Superman then repairs. Darkseid was a higher dimensional being, and his death caused him to fall through our third dimension on his way down to non existence. That's my condensed version. Darkseids revenge is to send Bruce back in time, making him jump forward and gain Omega energy as a bomb to destroy reality at the present, as shown in The Return of Bruce Wayne and the other series with Rip Hunter and the heroes searching for him in time. I forget the name of that one.
Surprised this video isn't like an hour long they do one of these like every couple years, btw thot it was kinda funny u released a D.C. Video because I'm working on an art piece of batman and robin.
Another thing to note is that during the season 2 finale of The Flash, Zoom uses a device to destroy the multiverse and it turns the skies red, but like the Crisis story Flash has to siphon off the energy and destroy the machine. When he sends a "time remnant" to destroy the machine it pretty much shows off his death like in the original Crisis.

I wish you covered when the DC started to publish monthly books taking place on worlds other than Earth 1. As a kid Infinity, Inc. taking place on Earth 2 kept me a way from reading it regularly.

I loved DC's Multiverse. Not only was it interesting to explore, but it was a neat way of managing the characters DC got from the other comic book companies. It didn't need 'fixing'. Was it too confusing? Only if a writer wasn't good enough to explain it clearly. My biggest beef with Crisis on Infinite Earths was that it retroactively destroyed their past history. After COIE, the writers had to create a history that no one knew about. That was supposed to be less confusing than the previous multiverse? Instead Crisis created new problems that the writers weren't really prepared to deal with.
alot of DC's probs w/the Multiverse was the rise of the short attention span generation/reader. i mean how hard is it to see the asterisk and realize that this happened in issue whatever?
New 52 was later, it happened after Flashpoint which was the real second hard reboot. 52, what happened after Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis, was a badly planned soft reboot that only lasted about 5 years. A lot of people, me included, hate the 52 changes because they mixed up a lot of things, destroyed certain important parts of the New Earth continuity and many other stuff, that's why they came up with the New 52 and later reverted the original crisis in Convergence.
Officially, most DC stories happen now in the New 52 multiverse which apparently exist separated from other multiverses that conform the whole DC mythos. Some people believe that there might be at least 5 different multiverses which include the original Infinite one, the 80's-90's worlds and hypertime (DC, Milestone, Wildstorm, Elseworlds), the new 52 (the "old" 52 apparently has no place in existence now), a Multiverse-2 mentioned in Multiversity (which was sort of a mini crisis) and the Dark Multiverse. According to DC after Convergence, "all worlds exist", so there might actually be infinite multiverses. It's a little confusing now.
I love how there is a Marvel comic where a caricature of the Anti Monitor pulls a crisis and Dr Strange points how the whole thing is confusing
I loved Final Crisis, but it can be hard to follow, which I think was purposeful to represent space and time breaking down in the DC multiverse and just the epic scope of the story. Grant Morrison always has these grandiose ideas, but doesn't always convey them in the clearest way. He should at least start adding footnotes, particularly for his silver age references.

They should have kept the Crisis on hold. It is the perfect vehicle to actually get a shared DC Cinematic Universe. You could take the best bits from all the past TV and Movie iterations and smash them together.
