Love the movie. Fran & Scott dancing moved me to tears. I mean I love Moulin Rouge's grandiose and over-the-top jukebox but Strictly Ballroom is the precious gem and the delightful underdog you cherish.
I watched this movie 20 years ago for the first time. LOVED IT. I just found out that Baz Lurhmann made this, he's the creator of Romeo and Juilet and others. No wonder I loved this movie. He found great actors! And Scott he is so easy on the eyes.
Fran is one of the best ugly duckling transformations I’ve ever seen on tv. She’s not a supermodel they stuck glasses on, she’s beautiful yet normal girl who obviously through confidence grows into herself not through a two minute makeover. Her clothes like the long sleep tops and long skirts look beautiful on her. And I think it’s her simplicity and realness that Scott is attracted to. So different to the glitzy world he’s used to. She is his Latin lover
@@max-jayderomero7743 She did put it perfectly! Another poster commented about an apparent plot hole that I always noticed, too. How does she manage it? With “mere minutes l” she shows up on the dance floor. Poised, demure, womanly, modest, sensual, assured. *I always wondered if* She may be a bit furious at all the back-and-forth *we’re dancing/we’re not dancing/we’re dancing right now, oh hurry, hurry*. If so, she’ll make that anger work for her. I love this part of the movie! Sure the red dress is beautiful in a hanger, but it’s ¡**formidable**! I as it flows over and around a woman who’s learned how to inhabit her skin. ...back to hair and makeup. Like the other poster I mentioned, (another YT video of the final dance) I’ve always noticed the no time for preening, too. But 20 years later, I watched this moment in the movie again. It’s not a plot hole. It’s a plot highlight! That’s the other glorious surprise upon beholding Fran as she takes her place on the dance floor. She is confident. She is prepared. She is dignified. She is self-discovered. All she needs: tight-eye-liner, just lip stain, a hair clasp and a single curl. No contrast foundation for her; she is contrast itself; hair, skin, flamenco 💃 dress. Standing there, waiting to begin, she’s not a princess. She is imperious.
I find the storyline of Doug so bittersweet. When I saw this in the theaters ,some people in the audience were laughing when he finally speaks his truth to his wife. I was in tears at the emotions from what was going on with Fran and Scott and the back story of Doug and his wife. I'm so glad I own a copy of this.
It’s such a divine movie and one of my fav Aussie movies. Strictly Ballroom is so gorgeous to watch- Paul and Tara are magic together on screen! Baz is a legend! Love Romeo and Juliet with the original Shakespearean script and loved Moulin Rouge - stunningly beautiful to look at 💖
What a timeless classic and one that should be left well alone. Can you imagine the remake? You can't make movies about romances between straight white folks these days, so both roles would be recast with bame actors and it'd either be two gay men, or two lesbians, fighting against the ballroom patriarchy and their homophobic insistance that dancers be male & female, plus the general oppression of the lgbtq community within amateur/pro dancing. I'm cringing even thinking about it. Interesting sidenote, the actress that played Fran also played her in the stage version of Strictly Ballroom, some 4 years before this movie was made. The cover version of, "Time After Time" used during this segment was also sung by Tara and Mark Williams and even had a music video: ua-cam.com/video/RcN0b7J_PfE/v-deo.html
This certainly has a story that revolves around the subject of Dance, but the storyline is quite different, and so is the setting. It really is VERY AUSTRALIAN.
These two movies are so far removed from each other you might as well be comparing a Van Damme action flick to My Little pony. The only thing they have in common is a love story and dance.

The chemistry between these performers is incredible.

It’s one of most romantic films ever made; it has to be, surely.
You are nice. What are you doing later?
My eldest sister introduced me to this movie when I was a kid. Didn't understand it at first but now i do and i love it. A true classic
One of the best scenes, the lovers dancing on the rooftop and Doug dancing downstairs without them knowing it

@@catcookie6726 Yes Doug's story is the most touching part of this movie for me.

This epic scene dancing to ‘time after time’ with backdrop of Coca Cola sign is just magic! Pure romance ❤
This man doesn't just dance...... He smolders.
Scott is gorgeous 😱
Why does this film bring a tear to my jaded eye...?
For people who choose to dance their own steps and forgo the trophy-live, truly live.

Even when she was the "ugly duckling" I thought Fran was a pretty woman who just needed to be polished off slightly to reveal the beauty within.

this is like a knock off from dirty dancing
Oh dear so sad.
I enjoyed this more than Dirty Dancing cause of the comedy.
This certainly has a story that revolves around the subject of Dance, but the storyline is quite different, and so is the setting. It really is VERY AUSTRALIAN.
It is way better than dirty dancing!
