Good video. That canal gate is very old(riveted together) and in poor shape. The lower ribs(4:49) are rotted away. I'd avoid that canal in wet weather. I enjoy seeing the various old sites. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick
Nice to see the French have the same sensible attitude to gate design as they have here in GB. I mean who needs gates /stiles etc on a hiking trail for people who are not 6'8 with 5' legs and stick thin? The chances of anyone other than Kate Moss holding a Gucci clutch passing through are remote at best. 🥴 Oh, and it's easy to figure out if you are in France or Switzerland in the Alps: just listen to the cows. In France they moo, in Switzerland they Yodel 😉
We started in the 1st week of May. There was little snow in the alps. But a late snow is the one sitting and lingering in the hills now. The hexatrek team recommends a late may/early june start for a southbound hike. Accomodation wise, in the Vosges and Jura, many refuges and restaurants were closed during the week and frantic on the weekends/public holidays, but there was no need for, since you go through lots of towns and walking is easy. In the Alps however many refuges open between the 15-19th of June. And there I find them very reassuring and comforting. A night is about 17 euros, many have linen blankets and pillows but you can add services like dinner (always 3 course) and breakfast which makes the stay slightly more expensive. Many offer a place to pitch a tent too.
Bravo sir. A nice look at the old world. I enjoyed it very much
Well done review! I saw the Pimps Cookies😅, but I am sure they were for Ted

Cheers! Yep, the lock gates weren't built yesterday.....but it appeared this canal had been pretty busy in its day.

Great video Rene, stunning scenery. What date did you start? Did you have any problems with accommodation not being open? Thanks for your help.
No problem for us, we're tenting, or rather Bivouacing.
