  • Chairs are difficult to make. Needless to say, a maloof inspired rocking chair is on a whole other level of difficulty. But you know what they say, go big or go home. I kind of went big, but got sent home. Follow me on this chair making journey.

Look up Hal Taylor he’s been making beautiful rocking chairs for probably 40 years now. Great instructor too.

Buy the Scott Morrison video. It will make it a lot simpler

Good for you man, I make these chairs for who ever I can and it is one of the most difficult pieces I have ever made in my 33 years as a cabinetmaker. For you to make them from scratch is impressive, keep up the good work. If you want to make it a bit easier may I suggest that you look up Hal Taylor and buy his plans and video book.

Much obliged. The first was deff a challenge....the second went a lot smoother. While I feel confident I could do a third with few issues, I know it would still be some work. Chairs are definitely one of the most underrated projects for difficulty. It'd amazing the amount of science and engineering that goes into every aspect of it to provide a functional and comfortable chair that can stand the test of time and the many thousand times it is sat on. Appreciate the suggestion. Will give it a look.

You fucked up a LOT, but I'm still deeply impressed with what you did, and the chair you actually made. All the mistakes are learning points .. Great video!!!

Best “real” video on UA-cam! Loved it. I could palpate your frustration and I totally understand “the struggle is real”. We always hear “if you’re not screwing up you’re not learning”. I learned a lot just watching. The Maloof rocking chair is in my crosshairs. Sure wish the price of hardwoods would come down. Keep on posting and learning!

One trick I learned for the 10/4 headrest-- use 8/4 draw the curve for it through the front 1/3 and put the cut off on the backside and it makes a nice shape and continuitious grain pattern.
Another trick for glue ups, use a slow set epoxy with long open time and gap filling properties. Easily cleans up with mineral spirits.
For the leg to seat joinery there’s a rabbet and round over combo that compliments each other and all that’s needed is a bandsaw and those bits for a perfect fit.
Just some things I picked up along the way. Keep up the awesome woodworking and videos. Hit me up in the shop. I have 12/4 and more. Tons of wood dried and ready to use

Awesome video, entertaining funny and informative. I’ve made three of these, they are aLOT of work but very rewarding. This video reminded me that I’ll probably never make another one haha

The first one kicked my ass. It was brutal. But you learn so much it's an important fight to take on. Tag me in some photos when your finished, would love to see it. @thewoodveteran on most platforms

Thanks. For a first it would have been nicer to be able to salvage it....but I learned a lot and the second one was much better.
