I'm from NYC, my great-grandmother loved shopping at B. Altman's in part because her name was Bertha Altman, of no relation to the owner, but she got the best service there because of her name. She was a very petite and stylish woman and lived into the 1970s. In my head, you now own my great grandma's coat because it's possible. She would've been a young mom when this was in style.

I love the silk dress, and honestly I love seeing repair work too. That means someone cared enough to make it live a little longer. I know the silk is going to disintegrate. But it would be really neat to go through it, photograph and document everything and then remake a copy. That way it could live on far after it because shattered dust.

Ermm the reason people don't really use umbrellas in Scotland is because any rain that's hard enough to be worth using one comes with winds that will break them. Maybe be careful if like it. 🙂

Abby, I need you to know this story. The day you came to the faire my partner and I were having a morning smoke at Danny Boy Pipes. We were chatting with one of the workers who was sipping on a Bloody Mary for breakfast. When all of a sudden this girl comes running up and out of breath! “She’s here! She’s here!” She told the worker. After she was able to compose herself the girl explained she had spotted you “The Abby Cox” who had inspired her love for historic clothing. The lady was willing to abandon her Bloody Mary in favor of helping her friend find you so she could at least say hi.
No idea if she found you but I hope you had fun. Ps love the clothes haul!

Before I forget, hello to Judy (friend of Abby's mom). I admire anyone who tries anything to dress up for a RenFaire. I wore selected pieces in black including boots, looked a little dour, so I popped on a copper circlet decorated with miscellaneous rose gold ribbons, beads and announced to my very well dressed (think Pierroette meets Moulin Rouge) friend, let's go. That thrifted hat is so IT! I am not a hat person, but that hat could convince me that I was.

Based on my experience working with baskets, I'd say this is an oak splint, double-handle work basket that dates circa 1860. My guess is that it was used for laundry and the dampness of wet clothes helped create the current shape but not being able to examine it for water staining, that's just a guess. And I'll take a stab at SBG (or SGB, left to right) for the monogram.

    • @kw9858
      @kw9858 Рік тому

Yes, if it is made from oak splints (I can't say for sure from the video), it's more likely to be older, as that is a traditional material. Although weavers today do indeed weave using historical patterns, very few of them work with oak, it is very difficult! I'm an apprentice weaver and I've only harvested and woven with bark. Using the interior of a tree (splints), whether oak or ash, is much more labor intensive. I'd also look for a name or initials on the bottom of the basket.

I love the hat 😍😍😍 I have many hats in my life but I don't wear them as often as I would like!
So if the museum "rejected" the dress due to it being not 100% original wouldn't that be rejecting the whole premise of historical clothing repairing, altering, creating new outfits from the scraps of old. How many dresses are 100% original?
We did finally make it to the ohio ren faire for Sci fi weekend!

If you want to gently reshape your basket, submerge the basket in water for several hours until the cane becomes softer and more flexible. Then make your adjustment - you could brace it between two heavy objects and leave it to dry in that new position. Perhaps put some weight in the base too - a few bricks wrapped in a cloth works well.
When weaving cane, it is soaked beforehand and woven wet to make it easier and more pliable, preventing snapping of the canes. It also dries tighter. A sign of well made, quality cane woven items is long individual canes (as opposed to lots of smaller pieces).
I will usually find an end piece and trace it back to its starting point - individual canes can be say 4 to 6 feet long - so that’s a great way to spot well made items.
I find that older items tend to have longer individual canes.
    Pre mass production etc.

Following all the curls, I believe the monogram on the umbrella handle is sgs (reading left to right). But there's an extra little curl on the top left that seems to be just to make it look more symmetrical, since it's not connected to anything that doesn't already have a connection, if that makes sense. Also the flouncy curls on the g are crazy excessive.

The monogram looks like LCJ on the umbrella. If you look the first bottom loop connects up to the c and then the biggest loop with the swirls at the end looks like a cursive j.

I always am confused when Abby drives into Ohio because I forget how different the southwest is, and I am always like: where are the trees? why is it flat? why do they have southern accents? WHY HAVEN’T I HEARD ABOUT AN OHIO RENFAIRE??

Nobody uses umbrellas in Scotland, you just exist in the mist.
True, extremely true. You just get damp.

I'd say SGB for the monogram. The B is a bit squashed vertically, but that might be because it's 3 letters on a handle made to only have 2 normally?
Also, people do use umbrellas in Scotland when they can... It's often massively windy so they break. It's not a fashion thing, more a practicality thing... Don't break your beautiful vintage umbrella by risking opening it in the wind.

Sounds like a pretty great sale! Its been YEARS since I got to go to one of those and I can remember the wonderful art deco necklace I found there....with, sadly, no memory of where that lovely necklace wondered off to!

Wow! What amazing finds! Isn't the hat enough of a neutral color that you could wear it with something on your cruise? It is too awesome to leave behind.
