    Thank you for being honest and not candy coating about the unbelievable price of the manufacture’s parts.
    I just removed the fuel pump in the fuel tank. While inspecting the fuel pump I found both hoses were bad and the insulation on both wires to the pump inside the tank disintegrated exposing bare wires from the base plate to the pump. Hoses were replaced but I can’t find any info where to purchase electrical wires designed to be immersed in gasoline.
    Did you make a video on replacing the wires, I can’t be the only person with this problem.

    I find it interesting that every time I contemplate removing the tupperware, I dread it. But then when I actually do the removal and reinstallation, it goes quickly and smoothly. I think us old time bikers are just so spoiled by our easy access bikes that the thought of all those screws etc just makes us shake our heads. Another great vid...thanks Kirk!

    I used a "Custom Accessories 19420 Plier Oil Filter Wrench" that worked real nice. I didn't have one of them "Jumbo Swivel Grip Oil Filter Wrench" or a "Adjustable Strap Wrench" all will do the job. I also replaced both hoses and clamps, to be safe. For me it took a days to brake and do it all. Also do your air filter at the same time and look over the motor and just take a second to look at things.

    Just fyi.. OEM equivalent is mahle kl 145. Mahle is OEM provider for a LOT of german production.. They're usually about 10-15 $$ per filter. The hose standard is SAE30R10.. and its expensive. I paid 25 ish for a 1 ft segment... Normally you're one of the best there is for videos.. but I didn't see the specs... Mann filters are awesome.. They're also an OEM supplier... I used them in my TDI

    I know very little about what goes on under the fairing. Just wondered if it might be possible to have the fuel pump and filter underneath the tank rather than in the tank? I’m sure there is a reason other than space saving. Very interesting video. Thank you, JJ

    Kirk,
    I am studying the charcoal canister removal and the fuel tank removal. The two hoses on the right side of the bike which are for the fuel spill and then for the charcoal canister return are in question. I have removed the charcoal canister. My question is can we turn A loop from those two hoses on the right side where one can be turned back into the other? The previous owner deactivated the canister but left it, I do not see the return line on the vacuum side or the supply hose coming into the canister, therefore my question is the two hoses on the right side, are they the two hoses that I need to deal with and I can loop one back into the other?

    Seems like it would make sense to move the gas filter to an outside of the tank location so it could be rpelaced as a routine service item. Any issue replacing the filter with a hose on the internal side and moving it downstream toward the quick disconnects on the outside of the tank?

    Hi Kirk,..how often does the Fuel Regulator go bad? I am at a stuck point with my 04. Parked it 2 years ago to do an abs ectomy,..it was running,..now it wont,..Replaced plugs, oil, fuel filter, fuel Pump,Battery,..turns over but wont start,..have good pressure coming out of new pump, electricity good to injectors,..will start if I put a bit of fuel directly in cylinders,..but fuel does not seem to be reaching them. Can all the injectors get clogged that bad at the same time?
    Thanks
    Dan.

    • @kirksmotorrad
      @kirksmotorrad  2 роки тому

      The hose going to the engine should be plugged and the other can go to the atmosphere. Running the raw gas into the engine side could be bad if a lot of fuel goes in there.

    As long as you're on the subject of fuel, a few months ago I had a pretty good fuel leak while my '99 LT was idling in my driveway. As soon as I got to the bike and realized it was gasoline, I immediately shut off the engine (as I was mentally freaking out at the possibility my bike could turn into a fireball at any moment!). Nothing bad happened after that, and I can't reproduce the leak in the shop. So, I've decided to replace ALL the fuel lines between the tank and injector rail, along with new metal quick-disconnects. Any other suggestions? I'm assuming I should buy the original, custom-shaped fuel hoses. They're amazingly-expensive, but I don't know if it's a good idea to replace them with straight fuel lines and risk kinking. I've found a pretty good handful of leaking problems on the BMW forums, so maybe this might be a great future subject for you in a future video to go over leak troubleshooting and/or total hose replacement. 20-year-old vehicles are sure to have various problems like these. Thanks for the videos.

    • @kirksmotorrad
      @kirksmotorrad  5 років тому

      The connections to the gas tank and fuel rail need to be tightened up once in a while or they start leaking when the get dried out.

    Last question. I re installed the fuel tank. Connected the fuel lines...connector up top..etc. There are two connectors that can connect to the fuel pump. One connector has a constant voltage, so when i plug that connector in the fuel pump constantly runs even without the key in the ignition. The bike also starts right up. The other connector which I'm guessing is the one to use turns the fuel pump on as it should when the key is turned to the on position and shuts off like it should once pressurized. Problem is the bike won't start, it just cranks. Any ideas?

    Hey Kirk Meister
    When I changed my air filter, I noticed I had bugs, dragon flies, bees...in the front of the filter and in the box...not unusual I'm sure.
    Question:
    I'm thinking about pulling a kids sock ( right tight size) over the air intake tube in the front of the bike. I think it will keep all those bugs from entering the filter. Kind of a pre-filter, but shouldn't impede air flow......
    What do you think ????

    • @kirksmotorrad
      @kirksmotorrad  4 роки тому +1

      maybe use a piece of screen over the tube if bugs are a real problem. using a sock will cause issues in the rain since it wont drain well

    I just joined the BMW family with a 2005 BMW K1200LT. No sooner then the day I told the wife about it, I began the repair journey. I wanted to address all maintenance suggested by Kirk. I changed the fuel filter during that process (20k miles, never changed filter 2/2/04). Shortly after making that change (400 miles) the bike started stalling on me. Made it home before I got stranded. Broke it down and found the u-shaped hose had a tear (as mentioned in the video, $53 plus shipping for a replacement). I took a u-shaped gas line from Rockauto.com (www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=9459692&jsn=2533) and cut it gown to remove the connector and used Sharkbite stainless steel connectors (tinyurl.com/yanuk79t) to install it . It seemed to me that this type of solve prevents the future damage. Total cost (without crimp tool) $15 and probably will never need another repair.

    I'm trying to find a fuel filter for my 2004 1150RT and went to www.bikebandit.com where they have many alternatives besides the OEM at $41, but they all ask for a fuel line size.
    I have not found the line diameter (not even in the Clymer Manual), please excuse my ignorance but I need to know the line size and/or what other filter you recommend besides the BMW brand and who sells it. Thank you very much for your response, Frank.
