HEADS UP ON THIS PUMP! Mine lasted less than 2 hours run time and started to shoot gas out the vent all over the fender well! However, I was forced to add a pressure regulator since weber carbs will flood with over 3 psi or so. This may be a good pump for carbs calling for 5+ psi, I have a feeling it was putting out even more, maybe 7 psi. I run a return line but it was after the regulator which is set around 2 psi {recommended by weber tech at Redline}, which apparently causes pump to fail? For real! Update- I tried the lower pressure edlebrock electric pump to eliminate the pressure reg., it ALMOST worked! It ran great, but just started to run out of gas on sustained full throttle which I rarely do, but "almost" ain't gonna get it. Sooo, got the standard edlebrock pressure pump, {sold by at least 3 different company names}, and added the regulator. It is now working beautifully and I love the ability to let it run for 3 seconds before cranking engine and then having it instantly start no matter how long it's been sitting. Luvin it- so far! Keeping a spare onboard, can probably replace it in 3 minutes on side of road if need be. I don't mind going thru this much crazy as long as it works out in the end. Going through this myself right now, the one I got from NAPA is still under warranty so I'll try the new one to see how it works before returning it and trying something else. I just got a fuel pressure gauge that I'm installing in front of the carb so I can keep an eye on the pressure to make sure it's not dropping. That clear filter is a good idea, you can actually see when the thing stops pumping. It's very frustrating as these things were bulletproof for 80 years and now you can't count on them.
I'm going to ask you a couple dumb questions so I apologize in advance. I appreciate your help and I'm constantly learning. Do you have a preference between worm drive clamps and spring clamps? If spring what size clamp are using on your 5/8 od fuel line? I got a 5/8 clamp and it just didn't feel tight. 2. Do I or should I use tape on the tubing threads that runs from the fuel pump toward the carb? Thank you again for your help
@@peterrusko6269 I prefer the spring clamps. They provide a more even seal and you can over tighten them. Plus they never strip out like the worm shafts do.
Wow! Nice video... I went through O'Reilly and Napa neither would fit into the metal fuel line. CarQuest in Colorado stocked one that I've had in for over a year. It seems to be holding up. I don't know what brand it is. Thanks for the tips! I appreciate your vids.
Once again, excellent video. Have an tons of complaints about bad fuel pumps so while I haven't had any issues, scared when mine gives out, there are no reliable replacements so thanks for the detailed breakdown!
I do most of my business through Oreillys, so when I needed a stock fuel pump for my 258 I bought their Precision brand. I am now on my 3rd warranted unit, and I'm thinking it's giving me trouble again. Fuel tank is new, pickup is new, hard and soft lines are all new with 2 inline filters. The clear Wix filter in between the pump and carb looks empty and I'm thinking it's causing me a fluctuating idle. Not sure what route to go, I've heard all these mechanical pumps are made under the same company.
The fluctuating idle can be from a bunch of different issues, but with everything new from the tank forward, and that you’re on your 3rd pump, I feel like it’s on its last legs. Sounds like you need to return the warranty pump for a refund and try something different. Or your going to need to keep a backup in your CJ just in case. :)
Nicely done, well, you have had lots of practice! Thanks for sharing a find for a possible mechanical fuel pump that will last longer than a few hundred miles. I would suggest dropping out that risky plastic fuel filter for dorman 55242 fuel line filter. Clear glass metal ends replaceable innards, doesn't melt due to excessive heat, break down from contaminants and how much do you really trust quality control on those $1.50 plastic filters.
Thanks for the recommendation. I have had problems with two pumps on my 83 Cherokee 258. Using a Carter now but just ordered yours. With respect to the filter, I have one between the pump and the carb. Tells you the same info about getting gas to the carb. The problem with the filter upstream of the pump is that it is now another source for suction leaks which can greatly affect the pumping. It’s surprising how much vacuum it takes to get fuel out of the tank. Just realized I don’t have a return line on the filter before the carb. That could be an issue.
Without that return line, you’re going to run into suction issues a lot. Vapor lock in specific. Haven’t had a single suction issue since it’s just a filter so unless it’s clogged it would be an inhibitor. Report back on your new fuel pump. I hope it’s as good as I think it is.
Hello, after readjusting my new carburetor today when I was just about to do a road test just noticed a gasoline smell and it was the new Carter fuel pump purchased last week is leaking a lot of fuel by the orifice. It is frustrating to have a pump that lasted just 1 week. Going to try now the US Motor Works.
I have a 1980 CJ7. It has a Weber carb that was rebuilt by a local mechanic recommended to me. He put in a new mechanical fuel pump and a glass filter. He said that the pressure was too high so he added a regulator. The pump is rated at 5psi. From the filter is just one line to the carburetor. No return line. I too have been through 2 fuel pumps in 2 months. The last one lasted about 10 miles. I bought the US Motorwoks pump you suggested. So, questions are, 1) install the new pump with or without the regulator?, 2) is the lack of a return a problem, 3) should I just go electronic before or after this try?
Interesting. I don’t know much about the Weber carbs but I would think you’d have to have a return line from the fuel filter before the carb, otherwise, you’ll have vapor lock.
Just installed a fuel pump and it seems as if its bad out of the box. Im not getting any fuel to the carb at all. Checked The lines to make sure There wasnt a block. Im able to get fuel from the tank to the line just before the fuel pump but nothing after that. Couldnt it be a bad fuel Pump out of the box ir is there something Im missing?
I would say, DOA. But that is assuming that you installed it with the pump arm resting on top of the cam lob. Also, have you tested to see if fuel is coming out of the tube that goes into the carb bowl? If that isn’t happening, then yea, you’re pump is dead. Mind if I ask what brand?
Yeah i installed the arm to rest on the top lobe. Had to watch your video to walk me through. Also, yes I did check the fuel Line going into the carb and no fuel. I bought an omix but it was before I saw your video. I have an american auto works pump enroute.
@@robertmccann3390 well if that is the case, please let me know of the outcome of the new pump. Sorry you had to experience the current state of crappy replacement fuel pumps.
I know. Been over a year since I produced anything. We've been building a new house and I haven't had any time or place to put a new project. My workspace has been taken over by boxes. Hopefully I can get back into the mix this summer. Got a bunch of shorts that I want to make.
Well, I assume that you already figured this out. But if not, the camshaft nut is the bolt head on the lowest and largest pulley at the front of the engine. I have a video about replacing the timing chain. You get a great shot of the front of the engine there.
So I have a straight 6 258, and am frustrated with manual fuel pump install, so I had my mechanic reinstall fuel pump, then ran a fuel line directly from a gas can to the fuel pump, won't start, did it again, but primed the carb manually....started, ran, died when it ran out of manual pour into carb........bad pump out of the box?
Maybe, but is it leaking fuel? I had this same problem when I replaced the last fuel pump. I had to vacuum fuel from the tank to the carb nozzle with the fuel pump installed. then put some gas in the carb. once I got the fuel pump to pressurize, I was good. Do you have a clear filter before the fuel pump so you can see if fuel is flowing?
Interesting. I just installed a new pump yesterday can’t get it to pump at all. Did you just hook up like a shop vac after pump to pull fuel up? I’ve Been told just cranking the key should create all the suction you need
Great video! I have a '79 CJ5 with a 6 cyl. Jeep would start with starting fluid but would not continue to run. No gas flowing into the clear filter so I replaced the fuel pump ... still no gas flow. What do you recommend I do next? Thanks in advance for your advice.
I’d try disconnecting the fuel line from the carburetor and use a hand pump to pull the fuel up the line, first. If that doesn’t work, it sounds like an issue in the fuel tank. Could be a clog/crimp in the line somewhere or a problem with the fuel stained in the tank. Obviously the last option is more intensive. I have videos on both if that helps.
My 1980 CJ7 has only one line coning out of the fuel filter to a Weber carburetor. No return line. Is that an issue. Went through 2 pumps recently. Just bought the US Motorworks.
@@coolguy_CJ7 Thanks for the part number. FYI, this is OUT OF STOCK everywhere. If you have ANY insight to where it is available I sure would appreciate it. Thanks again.
My 88 YJ has a mechanical on my 258. Shouldn't the same fuel pump work? If I go back to CJ7s it shows up. But on 88 yjs the USMW doesn't. LOL, went back and looked at the other brands and the numbers matched. Odd the USMW didn't show up on YJs. But I ordered one for a back up. Thanks.
@@coolguy_CJ7 Yeah, I ordered 2. The guy I bought this 88 from said his wife went 4 miles on a brand new one. This one got me home. I'm going old school. So mechanical stays. lbs of garbage goes. Thanks. Your videos are well done.
I just replaced my third in as many months today.. crown, crown, and now a carter on there now from Napa. What is the US Motor Works part number? Rock Auto shows an electric pump and so does US Motor Works web site.
5 pumps that's crazy. Red clay traveler had pump problems also. If the diaphrams are the problem watch the oil as a large amount of fuel in the oil will kill the motor. I'm sure you know that. I've got 60 000 on a bestest brand part Number b6737 made in USA. I think from orielly. I have some airtex brand on the shelf but I don't know if they are any good. Someone was saying Carter isn't what it used to be but I don't know. Sad something fairly simple is being a problem
@@coolguy_CJ7 fuel pump review could be another video. We need to figure out what pump is worth bolting on. Don't know yet if orielly still has the bestest I'll check
Is the fuel pump suppose to be hard to install , I was told the lever should make contact with the cam on installation , does the lever initially press down on installation or up or pressing up may break it? I did a rotation check on my CJ ,which was clock wise. I guess if the pump is quality is good it will hold up, if installed right.
It's really more of ease of installation. The pump arm is moved up and down by the cam shaft lobe, the lobe is shaped like an egg. Finding the flattest part of the cam shaft lobe, just reduced the amount of angle to get the bolts threaded properly.
@@coolguy_CJ7 Another thing , when reinstalling vibration damper pulley on the crankshaft ,what is the final gap between the damper pulley and time chain cover. I did not think to measure it before I took it off. TY
@@coolguy_CJ7 Yes that makes sense. My other concern was when the washer butts to the crankshaft all the pulleys should line up. P.s. ignore the thumb down icon, just woke up saw your response and my finger somehow made contact with it. I appreciate your input.
@@coolguy_CJ7 Probably a stupid question, what is the purpose of torqing down bolts. I have never torqued anything down. I was watching another UA-cam channel "Jeep Solid" he torqued his time chain cover 55-60. I have a 1/2 drive torqued wrench . It felt like when tried ,if I torqued it that much it would strip the threads. Any thoughts on that?
I'll keep the Golden Eagle 100% original, but I've been debating putting an EFI on my 84. Been having vacuum issues lately and am getting tired of trying to figure out the nuances of the rebuilt Carter BBD.
Newbie here. At 10:15 you mention a clear fuel filter. And then at 24:00 you mention the 3-port fuel filter. Is the clear fuel filter simply to see if fuel is pumping through? In other words, it's not a required part but more for a visual inspection. Am I correct?
Sorry so long in response. I got mine from AutoZone. It just needs to have a 5/16 inlet and outlet port (or whatever size your tube from the tank is). It’s more for viewing purposes so the brand doesn’t really matter since there is minimal difference in quality.
I have a question that is along this same thread. I have a 1980 cj with a mechanical fuel pump. If I let it sit for over a week, it seems as if all the gas drains all the way back to the fuel tank and has to be re-primed before it will start. Does the fuel pump work as check valve? Is the suppose to be one in the line that I’m missing? Would putting one inline help with this issue?
@@andyharmon2648 that would be my first guess second. For my 79, I have to turn the key 2-3 times. Let it turn over a couple times and it always starts right up on the third attempt. Really what happens is the fuel in the carb bowl evaporates enough to where the pump needs a few rotations of the cam shaft to fill the line back up.

Today, I received my New Carb compatible for Jeep 2-Barrel BBD 6 CYL 4.2L 258 CJ7 1984 -from maxpeedingrods at Amazon. Let me explain my setup so you can better advise me on how to proceed. Ignition has been upgraded to HEI. Also, I installed an inline see thru fuel filter before the mechanical fuel pump and installed new fuel pump. Also installed a manual fuel regulator since I measured the fuel pump and it was supplying 10 psi and I have it set to 4 psi before entering the fuel filter that goes before the carburetor. I adjusted the idle speed to 600rpm and checked the advance timing to be 8 btdc. Then I noticed that mixture was reach due to black smoke out when accelerating. I closed both idle mixture completely and then open them both 1 1/2 turn. After that it was too rich and black smoke came out of the exhaust so I connected a vaccum gauge to adjust the idle mixture closing but keeping highest vaccum at 20 psi but even though it keeps mixture rich but it is much better. My situation now is that it hesitates when accelerating from idle. It runs ok on higher gear like 2nd, third, forth. But it stalled when climbing a small hill entering my garage. ¿Do you have any advice on how to proceed?
I’m going through the same thing. It’s a refined game of air/fuel and timing. You need to adjust one screw at a time. 1/4 a turn at a time. Test drive and adjust. Same goes for the timing. With the HEI you might be able to move the timing out to 9 or 10.

Absolutely. You just run a rubber fuel line or replace it with a nickel copper line. I have a video on that.
Thank you. I'll look for your video. I appreciate you responding.
Also, there isn’t any real pressure in the fuel line outside of the tube from the pump to the carb. And that is only like 2psi.
Wow! Nice video...
I went through O'Reilly and Napa neither would fit into the metal fuel line. CarQuest in Colorado stocked one that I've had in for over a year. It seems to be holding up. I don't know what brand it is. Thanks for the tips! I appreciate your vids.
Sorry so long in response. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones :) glad to hear you found one that holds up.
Once again, excellent video. Have an tons of complaints about bad fuel pumps so while I haven't had any issues, scared when mine gives out, there are no reliable replacements so thanks for the detailed breakdown!
Glad to help. Pick up USMP 16843 just in case :)
Great video & thanks for tips - have an 84 CJ7 that is getting some love!
Usually takes a lot of love :)
Great build with the glass filter. That will be my next replacement.
Sorry. We all seem to be in the same boat. Please let me know if the US Motor works one works.
Do you take questions?
Absolutely. Can’t promise I’ll know the answer :)
Just installed a fuel pump and it seems as if its bad out of the box. Im not getting any fuel to the carb at all. Checked
The lines to make sure
There wasnt a block. Im able to get fuel from the tank to the line just before the fuel pump but nothing after that. Couldnt it be a bad fuel
Pump out of the box ir is there something Im missing?
I would say, DOA. But that is assuming that you installed it with the pump arm resting on top of the cam lob. Also, have you tested to see if fuel is coming out of the tube that goes into the carb bowl? If that isn’t happening, then yea, you’re pump is dead. Mind if I ask what brand?
Yeah i installed the arm to rest on the top lobe. Had to watch your video to walk me through. Also, yes I did check the fuel
Line going into the carb and no fuel. I bought an omix but it was before I saw your video. I have an american auto works pump enroute.
@@robertmccann3390 well if that is the case, please let me know of the outcome of the new pump. Sorry you had to experience the current state of crappy replacement fuel pumps.
I will let you know as soon as I get it.
Thank you again for your help and your videos are such a huge help.
Thanks!
where ya been at man ! miss seeing the videos
I know. Been over a year since I produced anything. We've been building a new house and I haven't had any time or place to put a new project. My workspace has been taken over by boxes. Hopefully I can get back into the mix this summer. Got a bunch of shorts that I want to make.
Newbie here so thank you for explaining it simply and for this video to help. My fuel filter runs off the other line (?). Is that right? I6 /232
Send me a couple images to dellis6914@gmail.com. that way I can understand what line you are referring to.
Can i ask where the cam nut is located? I installed a new pump and it didn't have any suction. Perhaps i installed it incorrectly.
Let me look into the Weber carbs. I’m pretty sure there should be a return line.
The pump you recommend seems to be unavailable now... Can you post a part number?
Ha! They should be sending me Influencer $$$. USMW 16843.
Thanks.
I think the YJ (Chrysler) version of the 258 was the same as the CJ (AMC) till 92? The USMW pump will work perfectly.
USMP 16843.
5 pumps that's crazy. Red clay traveler had pump problems also. If the diaphrams are the problem watch the oil as a large amount of fuel in the oil will kill the motor. I'm sure you know that. I've got 60 000 on a bestest brand part
Number b6737 made in USA. I think from orielly. I have some airtex brand on the shelf but I don't know if they are any good. Someone was saying Carter isn't what it used to be but I don't know. Sad something fairly simple is being a problem
Sad but true. Hopefully this one holds up. So far so good.
@@coolguy_CJ7 fuel pump review could be another video. We need to figure out what pump is worth bolting on. Don't know yet if orielly still has the bestest I'll check
Great job.
TY
@@raditian2 the vibration dampener should only go as far as the washer will allow it as bottoms out on the crankshaft. Does this make sense?
I put an electric fuel pump on my Jeep just for priming! No more pumping the gas pedal from sitting!
I'll keep the Golden Eagle 100% original, but I've been debating putting an EFI on my 84. Been having vacuum issues lately and am getting tired of trying to figure out the nuances of the rebuilt Carter BBD.
is that pump still holding up? I just ordered the USMP16843 after having two brand new pumps fail
Yep. I’ve got a backup in the glove box just in case, but haven’t had a single issue (jinx).
Newbie here. At 10:15 you mention a clear fuel filter. And then at 24:00 you mention the 3-port fuel filter. Is the clear fuel filter simply to see if fuel is pumping through? In other words, it's not a required part but more for a visual inspection. Am I correct?
Correct. If you need more clarity, email me at dellis6914@gmail.com.
What brand of clear fuel filter is connected up to your fuel pump?
Do you have the fuel return line from the fuel filter right before the carb hooked up and running back to the tank?
@@coolguy_CJ7 yes. I changed the sending unit out a few months back and suspect I may have mixed the supply and return line.
@@coolguy_CJ7 thank you. Keep the vids coming. I’ve learned a lot from yours. Guess I’m dropping the fuel tank again.
Have you had any luck with the Omix ones? They seem to be more expensive then the us motorworks ones.
No. Omix-Ada is a distributor of various companies (99% Chinese knockoffs) and doesn’t really have any quality control. I went through all the name brands before finding the US motor works one. After sitting in the garage for 2 months, started right up and runs like a champ.

YOU DID 5 THINGS WRONG........SEAL? MOST LIKELY
Really? Tell me what the 5 things are.
Again, what are the 5 things that I did wrong that you are the only one that is aware of?
@@coolguy_CJ7 Hi, thanks for your response. Today I should receive my US Motor Works fuel pump and I’ll get back to the fine tune process. Let see how it goes. Thanks again.
