- This is a climate battery greenhouse located at 7200 feet on a mountain in Basalt Colorado. The Colorado Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute - CRMPI - is able to grow tropical plants such as banana trees and other edible fruits and vegetables using only the power and heat from the sun. The greenhouse is able to maintain it's own heat even in frigid temperatures of -30F / -34.4c by using the climate batteries stored heat from the sun!

Isn't God amazing!! The gentleman in North Dakota who dug 8 feet into the earth to capture the heat from the earth for his green house - grows year round. The trees and plants produce volumes,,, s.o much so that he sells produce to his town! And here is this gentleman using generated heat to keep the greenhouses warm at 7,200 feet!!!... the seeds are sown and the plants know what to do! The Lord gave us the seeds... and they know to grow! Your garden shows your hard work and labor of love. And it shows God's glory!

Very impressed by the way you are growing papaya at 7200 feet. I am living in a hardiness zone 9B where only a few days with temperature below zero. Do you think just with in-house climate battery ( no active heating) can grow tropical fruits all year around?
Several independent studies show that with pure solar gain and good design one can improve the inside climate by at least 4 climate zones, which would mean zone 13, equal to Puerto Rico and Hawaii, and which is fully tropical.
Not much mention of water here. A lot of the crops are high water use. I am curious about water sources.
Anything grown in a greenhouse in cool weather uses very little water. When it's cold, the house is sealed up and the evaporated water condenses on the film and rains back down. In the summer when it's hot, greenhouses use more water but nothing near outdoor growing.
How do you run your fans? Do you have them on a timer that comes on and off during certain times of the day?

Since water carries 3 times the heat for a battery why a rock wall and not a bunch of water tanks?
really wish there is more info offered on details of the dementions of the various greenhouses, and internal temperatures achieved/maintained with external temps at night... and how much wood they burn each winter, and such. I even tried looking up info online [outside of youtube vids] and couldn't find much more than advertisings...
The cosmic talk is useful to a point, but what's it really help if there's no "how you can do this too" info offered...

So if its been created by public monies, I can only see it reasonable to expect more free "how to's"....

They will design a system for you but whether they`ll do it for free is another question...i suspect not ;)
Not everything in the world is free. If you want to learn more why don't you buy his book, or even better, do one of his workshops/courses! If you think he's doing all of this for bragging rights then you've missed the point completely!!!
Check out Greenhouse in the Snow videos. At least it shows a bit more of the general build. Here, the CRMPI is growing a wonderful cornucopia of fruits and vegetables and herbs. Components of the build: 1. the back wall is a passive solar collector. With all the plants, can the sun actually reach the wall to heat it? Is that the way it works? Or perhaps it's a thermal wall built against a berm. It would be helpful to get a tour of the outside of the greenhouse on all sides. 2. A wood-burning sauna. So this is where you get your heat. Details about the build and not a sales job would be more appreciated. We are all here to learn.

He has written a book 'forest garden greenhouse' that goes over a lot more specifics of how his greenhouses work, including this greenhouse, and his design process. its a great read, would highly reccomend.

The worm farm is below the walkway, they just put wooden boards over it (was shown in another video).
Nice place, we need to look at the facts and numbers. Is it sustainable for the average Joe looking to supply food for their family and community. Not enough sun equals wood burning, and electricity usage period. Its nice to have the time for R&D, most dont have this luxury, we are a long ways from migrating to warmer temps when the snow flies in Ontario Canada. People must learn to eat what can be produced under their local circumstances, this is paramount. We must stop importing food and resources from long distances and start eating whats available local. If we cant move to warmer temps for a myriad of reasons, we have to change our diets to reflect the circumstances. The present way of life is not sustainable, nature will correct this problem.

The idea that anyone is going to get anything out of the two edible cactuses on the floor seems unlikely to me. If you want to produce food you have to do it at scale.

Too much manipulating of nature in the name of mimicking her to a point when it's not natural anymore. To imitate this man one must be obsessed and self-centred it seems. Not a good example for some of us who do permaculture respecting nature while we live attending to family and loved ones as well.
