Generally it makes sense historically when females were non combatants. Here it's not just sexist. It's suicidally stupid, considering she's still a soldier.
Or it's chivalrous. Granted, with the rise of modern weaponry, chivalry is less obviously correct, but historically speaking, men (who typically have much greater upper body strength and used it all day in manual labor work) could easily kill a woman if they hit her. It made complete and obvious sense not that long ago (on the order of hundreds of years) to have a code of ethics that men do not hit women. Without it, women would live in constant fear. I'd argue that even today, we're better off with it in non-combat situations.
