- Let's look back on my language learning plans and goals for 2021, the progress I made this year, and the things I still need to work on. Sorry about the audio for the first half of this, my hard drive died (RIP) and I had backups of everything but the first external audio clip.

It's crazy how different we are with languages, yet we both love language learning. That's the really cool thing about learning languages. There's no wrong way. First of all my goals are always time based. I never think about how many books or movies just how much time I spend with books and usually TV series instead of movies. And also my motivations almost never change. It''s always the same for years in most cases. 😂
Agreed! I love getting to hear about the ways other people learn and see how they're similar to or totally different to how I learn!

Great to see that you've made such a huge progress in bulgarian. It's truly not easy to learn, but as is with everything, it takes time, effort and practice to master it. Not many people are interested in learning bulgarian though, so it's really good to see that you are.
And if you want to be more exposed to it, I have tons of bulgarian music on my channel (playlists) that you can listen to, I can also recommend you some other podcasts (in bulgarian) here on UA-cam (people just talking about random stuff and the world), some movies too, though we haven't had a proper cinema in decades, although bulgarian subtitles to Hollywood movies might help you a lot if you want, anything that I can help you with your progress, don't hesitate to ask.

I feel ya on the dabbling. Feel like i want to keep trying lots of different languages, but actually want/need to focus on the main ones first.
Unfortunately, I started learning English two years ago and I took it seriously just about a year ago. I'm very happy with my progress but there are so many languages I want to learn that I kinda feel stuck in English. Could understand everything you said and your accent is lovely. I'll try to take IELTS by the end of the next year and, depending on my results, I'll be able to start learning other languages like: Norwegian and japanese. In my opinion, Japanese is kind of a cute language and it's an asian language which makes it more challenging.

I don't focus on writing (except in English); however, I like to write a summary of what I was doing during the week to check the daily words I don't know.
That's a great idea! I'll definitely try that out at some point this year as it sounds like a great way to notice gaps in vocabulary!

Sure! The courses I've been taking are with Queer ASL (they're remote but based out of Canada) and I've really enjoyed them. The other site I mentioned in this video is lifeprint!

This year is the first time I've ever felt this way! I usually love being a beginner in at least one, but currently my brain is NOT having it 😂
Had to first skip to dabbling languages section cause wanted to see if you got to do Japanese! Honestly, I feel you! Right now, I want nothing more but to be intermediate/advanced in all my languages 😂 okay, jumping back to beginning now! Curious able all the other languages ✨

Honestly my goal at the start of the year wasn't clearly formulated, but it was probably just to keep going with Japanese. I'd say I've definitely accomplished that, although I've also added Mandarin into the mix, and come much further than I thought I would to be honest. I've now read a huge chunk of my first novel in Japanese, and am probably on track to finish it within a year of having started it.
It sounds like you had a great year for language learning! Congrats on your progress with your Mandarin and Japanese, I hope your novel reading keeps going well!

Have you read the PJ series before? I find that if I don't pay close attention, even looking up every word I don't know, I have no clue what is going on. Maybe it's easier if I knew the plot beforehand. This is my first pass through it.
I just finished book 4 (in French), which was really confusing for me because I didn't pay as much attention while reading. I will finish the 5th book hopefully soon, then I either want to start on the next series in Spanish, or improve my listening comprehension by watching youtube videos with subs in my target language.

I haven't actually! This is my first time reading the series, which I think is part of why it's taking me so long. I've been reading a contemporary rom-com type book in German too and I find I'm able to read way faster since the vocabulary is much more familiar.
Luckily beyond it being slow and needing to look up lots of new words I haven't had too much trouble! I find I'm able to follow the plot and when I do struggle to understand a scene I just look up a summary online or ask my partner who's read all the books before. I think I definitely do have to pay more attention than if I was reading them in English, though!
