@surveytestmoney2550 Actually, this shell update is fairly recent as the amount of plastic in the ocean increases. The only reason hermit crabs are resorting to trash is because they’re pushed to desperation, not because it’s mere instinct to prefer trash.
It is true that humans need housing as well of course.

Hermit crabs also form lines and then switch with each other: Multiple hermit crabs will wait around a shell that's too big for all of them and once a big enough hermit crab comes along they will form a line and sort themselves biggest to smalles. Once the biggest hermit crab changes into the big shell the next one in line will change into the now discarded shell and so on. They do it really quickly because they are very vulnerable without their shell. It's really amazing how clever they are.

In the life of a crab I would think the chance of having someone step on their little house and break it is really slim. Absorbing chemicals and toxins from degrading plastic is likely not good for the soft abdominal section that is in contact with plastic. The benefits of a "natural home" seem to outweigh the risks you described.😉

For those questioning where he's getting his shells, in the longer version of this video he explains that he uses donated tapestry shells from organizations and people who want to support his project.

Your support for the underrated, yet extremely important hermit crab is beautiful. You're the only person I see doing this.❤

This is soooooo important! I don't think enough people understand that the pretty shells you pick up off the beach could be a potential home and life saver for these little guys! All creatures are important!

Its so rare to catch them switching!! Ive been taking care of these little dudes for 5 years now and ive only seen them switch once! They only do it when they feel really, really safe and usually itll be at night or something.

I grew up loving hermet crabs. I have heard little of them since. THANK you for your simple but life saving acts to help them. God Bless you in your journey. I'll remember to leave a few shells like those on the beach.

This is really important too! Dont take full shells from the beach! I know their pretty! But they are homes for animals. If you keep looking, there will often shells with large holes in them or broken shards that still have beautiful designs and textures that are useless to these animals, so they're okay to take. They often just get recycled back into the ocean so of course dont take too many or all the time but if you find a nice one that obviously is unsuitable for any crab or animal that may use it than thats much better!
