I definitely could not do it without my wife supporting me the way she does. I was extremely lucky. She is younger, but she is as old fashioned as I am.
I've been researching this topic for a few months now, and having almost 10 years experience as Maintenance and Facilities Management, as well as a year as an Electrician helper, I think I'm ready to take the plunge! Your videos have helped me out tremendously and I'm very scared but hopping in full force! I want to start out part time until I can build a customer base, but I will be professional and not just a "Chuck with a Truck" 😅
Hello. I wanted to say thank you for all the informationa and time that you have given us. I was literally in the process of starting my buisness when i found your channel. Monday is 03/04/24 I will be going out with my packets . Thank you again!
Dear Ray, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for everything you’re doing to educate people about the handyman business. Your videos have been incredibly valuable to me as I conduct my own research in preparation for starting a handyman business. I also wanted to let you know that I will definitely be using your Jobber link when I’m ready to get started. One of my biggest challenges is setting my prices to attract customers and my biggest fear is that I will not be able to keep a full schedule. Thank you again for your insights and guidance. I look forward to learning more from you!
This is the first of you videos I’ve seen. I like your presentation and attitude. I’m line myself up now to begin my own handyman business and can tell I’ll be watching quite often. Thank you in advance. 🙏🏻❤️
Ive never learned so much from a video before. Thank you! For providing first timers like myself with the confidence to get this process started the right way 🙏 you just gained a follower!
You've mentioned before you get work orders for jobs from property managers. I'd like to see a video on that for more detail. Like "this is the work order i received yesterday, it says x tasks need to be done at x residence". And the process of turning that work order to an invoice to getting paid. thanks
Watch the live stream I did this morning. The first one. I literally go through exactly that process. I can't share my screen for that, because it contains too much specific information about my clients and my tenants and my business, but I went through that entire process this morning and I live streamed it.
Thanks for the great video and all of the helpful info! I was looking for the job / pricing list that you mentioned in this video and cannot find it amongst the other links.
Wow 🤯 as someone who is just starting out this was not only extremely informative but you helped give me the motivation and courage to work harder and be the top quality the trades need. Thank you for this video. Mahalo 😊

It is just hard to get out of this rut and also scary to shift gears when I have a family also. I should just dive in though and get established before I leave my day job.
Another great and informative video. Thanks again! When you started out your handyman business, did you get a dedicated laptop or tablet to use solely for the business?
Not right away, but I did eventually get a dedicated tablet that I took with me every day when the weather permitted. During the worst of the summer the heat was too much for the tablet though.
We would greatly appreciate it if you did a Vlog for about a week of day in and day out work in general, the actual jobs, calls, and how you do it day by day. I have watched every bit of the older ones already.
I used to be a self employed contractor/handyman but I had to give it up for a job with a more stable income. I now want to get back into it, but I want to focus on 2-4 hour jobs that I can do in my spare time. But maybe eventually take on bigger projects. My question is, do I name and market my business as a handyman business? Or should I name and market it as a remodeling business to reflect what I would like to do once I am more established?
That's a tough call. If you file an LLC, you can file a DBA underneath your LLC for whatever name you want to operate your business under. In most places you can even have multiple DBAs under one LLC. So you could have a fencing company and a handyman company and a plumbing company and an electrical company each with their own DBA.

You wouldn't need a CPA to make an LLC. I'm pretty sure I was clear about that. There are lots of websites you can use to do it quickly and cheaply. I prefer my CPA. I formed my LLC before I had a CPA and he went back and changed my LLC so that I got more back in taxes every year than I would have.
Man, I’m just having a hard time accepting that I should be doing all of this before I even actually have any work or clientele. How can I pay a CPA if can’t get any work for the first few months? Maybe I should secure some business first
You got to do what you got to do man. If you have to start working before you have everything lined up legally then that's what you have to do. You wouldn't be the first, but I can't make a video telling everybody to just start working and worry about the business stuff later. My best advice would be to continue doing whatever you're all ready, doing for a living and save up the money to start your business the right way. My second best advice would be to make sure you don't accidentally find yourself in a position where you've been doing handyman work for 2 years and you still can't seem to justify spending the money to do it the legit way. How much did the accountant ask for? If he's too expensive, there are websites that will file an LLC for you pretty cheap. I'll actually be doing a video on one of those soon. However, if you start your business without insurance, or a business license, or some of the other things that you need in place then you're putting yourself at risk as compared to starting off with all your ducks in a row from day one. Either way, I wish you good luck. If you have to start working without having everything in order, just make sure you get an order as fast as you can instead of thinking you'll always get to it next month.
@@bulletproofhandyman yeah, I work for a few realtors here and there but they never have enough work and when they do have work, they want me to pretty much drop everything and do the job.
Hey all, I love this content. However, I believe the “corporate veil” that an LLC provides is not the “bulletproof” shield against legal action that many think it is. It protects your personal assets from business creditors: those to whom your business owes money. So if you fall behind on your business debts, they can’t come after the family station wagon. It does not, however, stop a wronged party from suing you for damages in the event you mess up a toilet install, drop a hammer on someone’s head, or accidentally burn their house down. Just think about it: if you were wronged in such a way, you might sue everyone and anyone who had a hand in your injury. The corporation and its owners included. Just because they are separate legal entities, doesn’t mean they can’t both be sued. Exercise caution, and cover your ass!
I agree with this completely. I don't provide all the disclaimers every time I talk about an LLC, but I do try to make it clear over the course of time in my videos that an LLC is not bulletproof at all. There are many, many different ways to pierce that veil. I recommend an LLC partially because of the small chance that it will protect you, but also for the professional appearance, the tax structures that become available to you, and because they really aren't very hard or expensive to form. It's also easier to sell an LLC with a good financial history. Thank you for taking the time to lay all that out.
The only true way to protect you personally is to be a C Corp. Your company is completed separated from your personal assets. Not a pass through entity
I started my business with harbor freight tools. Spent $1,400 on everything I needed to do MOST of the work I was expecting. If you don’t absolutely abuse them they’re great. I have tools from 4 years ago I’m still using. A lot of them have upgraded
@@bulletproofhandyman also why the hell would someone incorporate to do 1k max jobs? Just operate as a sole proprietor, they would have 1m in insurance so who cares...
Imagine advising someone to start taking job for work they have never done before on peoples homes lol haaaaaaaaaaaa, no experience lol. Then on top of that you can demand 300 per day lol haaaaaaaaaaaa
Love the advice, HATE that you support AI branding. if the shoe was on the other foot, when a robot can do a better job than you and is putting you out of business, would you say the same thing? Support your local artists.
Oil is going to be opened back up. So all the wannabe handyman will go back to work and leave it to the real handyman. The market is getting flooded with handyman. In the past 2 years Houston has had thousands of thousands getting into the handyman work. I can tell you its messed it up for the businesses that have been in for a long time.
Handymen are all failures. Jack of all trades and master of none. You’ll never be considered a professional because you don’t specialize. Cheap but wise homeowners know how to exploit handymen because of this. Most don’t know how to price their services and undercut everyone. They’re “busy all the time”. There is one where I live who calls himself ‘Bottom Dollar Handyman’. What a joke. Y’all fighting each other for peanuts. More UA-cam taught handymen getting their LLC’s everyday 😂
I respectfully disagree with you sir. I do agree that what you say is often true of individuals but not across the board. I've met as many certified tradesman hacks working for $25 an hour as I've met professional handymen doing much higher quality work for much higher pay.
@@timgrant1586nope. You dilute your perceived value to clients. They know you’re not licensed and that is appealing only to bargain shoppers. A wealthy client would never hire a handyman to work on their house. They would hire a general contractor who would source professionals in each specific trade. Would you want a dentist to put your child’s braces on or an orthodontist instead? If your loved one had a brain tumor would you rather a brain surgeon perform the surgery or a general practitioner, maybe a physician’s assistant? If you were accused of a crime and faced life in prison would you rather have the best criminal attorney you could afford or the guy in the local strip mall who writes up wills and does a little family law, some real estate law, intellectual property and bankruptcy law? I know it all looks easy on UA-cam but you don’t know what you don’t know. A licensed plumber or electrician will make more than you all day every day. HVAC forget about it. Masonry, structural framing, finish carpentry and tile all take many hours of repetition to become efficient and produce a quality product. That’s why apprenticeships take 4,000-8,000 hours to complete. I fix mistakes every week by handymen who thought they knew but simply did not have a clue. The client wanted a deal but learned the hard way having to pay again.
Peanuts? I made 175 for changing out a light switch to a dimmer switch, installing a toilet paper holder, and fixing a cabinet with a loose track. Took me around an hour In total. As an electrician I made about that in an 8 hour day. Tell me where that’s going wrong?

It's also easier to sell an LLC with a good financial history. Thank you for taking the time to lay all that out.
@@bulletproofhandyman just getting to know your channel, friend. Look forward to digging deeper. Cheers!
Awesome, see you around!
This reads as someone whose heard this a couple of times but doesn't actually understand the topic in any real depth.
The only true way to protect you personally is to be a C Corp. Your company is completed separated from your personal assets. Not a pass through entity
😮 harbor freight in the Northeast. Does anybody have any experience with those cheap battery tools?
I'm afraid I haven't tried any of those off brands. I wouldn't think they would be great but I have no experience with them.
I started my business with harbor freight tools. Spent $1,400 on everything I needed to do MOST of the work I was expecting. If you don’t absolutely abuse them they’re great. I have tools from 4 years ago I’m still using. A lot of them have upgraded
Step-1:
Don’t even EVER think that replacing Wax toilet-rings or faucet washers should be done for anything less than $600.00/Day 🤦♂️🥴😂
Definitely should be about $3.50.
My company is over 2m and i have a Gmail account. That dont make a difference at all...
You're right, having a professional email address serves no purpose. I'll make sure to delete this video right away.
@@bulletproofhandyman also why the hell would someone incorporate to do 1k max jobs? Just operate as a sole proprietor, they would have 1m in insurance so who cares...
Keep over paying your accountant for strategies that dont have any affect on earners at this level.
He reading the wrong books, read the Bill of Rights.
He gets paid for not reading the Bill Of Rights.
Imagine advising someone to start taking job for work they have never done before on peoples homes lol haaaaaaaaaaaa, no experience lol. Then on top of that you can demand 300 per day lol haaaaaaaaaaaa
No experience owning a business sir, not no experience fixing things.
Imagine getting on UA-cam and finding an honest man giving good advice, just to be a hater 😅 loser. “lol haaaaaaa”
Love the advice, HATE that you support AI branding. if the shoe was on the other foot, when a robot can do a better job than you and is putting you out of business, would you say the same thing?
Support your local artists.
I wish it wasn't the case, but the AI does a perfect job for 1/10 the price or less. It will take my job too some day. It's a new world.
Good to know.
thanks a lot for the documents...I subscribed to Jobber using your link and your referal...
Oh awesome! Thanks!

💯
“handyman” sounds like a homosexual term of endearment
A Jack Of All Trades But A Master Of None Is Better Than A Master Of One. Diversity in the trades makes you more appealing to a potential customer.
A handy man is a jack of all trades but a master of none but still is better than a master of one.
