Impressive research that shares the truth behind the song. I have taught my students this song in its full glory for many years. I also had learned that the scrubbed version in the school song books in the 1950's was finally corrected with the help of the Almanac Singers, and Pete Seeger. Margie Guthrie, Woody's wife supported the quest to bring his truthful song to life. Thank you for sharing this video!!!! Keep on Keeping on!

I can't ever remember the many times we sang this with Pete. Pete always sang all the verses, especially the ones they banned from schools. It seemed to come around full circle for Pete when he sang This Land with Bruce at the Inauguration concert.
Thanks for this video. Hopefully more people will learn about it. I know that whenever I sing it, I shall never forget those three verses.

Well there is plenty of unknown history out there, for instance the story of what Francis Scott Key seen to inspire him to write the Star Bangled Banner. I find musical history fascinating and hear different perspectives of the American experience presented by someone whom took the time to write and perform their experiences. I am a big Ry Cooder fan and appreciate the history of instruments and music he has opened my eyes to. I will have to say that just because other countries like us probably has more to do with the money they receive from us either directly or by trade which is never in our favor and how much they can push us around. Most countries, like people respect principled actions. Nobody has been principled all the time. Thank you for this short video.

The melody was taken from "When the World's on Fire." a song sung by the Carter family long before Woody used it.

Cutting those stanzas just does a disservice to the song in my opinion. The song was meant to show that America is NOT a perfect nation and that it has institutional problems with classism and racism. I think schools should teach kids the INTENDED meaning of the song, and the context of why it was written.

Pretty good metaphor for the country as a whole... watered down genius.

I've always wondered what native Americans thought of this song.

11/2022…U have a gr8 voice Will. I’d love to hear a Woody Guthrie songs by U in concert. This is a good story of a true hero, & the evolution of a song, from its censored version, to the truth to power version in its entirety. So humbling to hear what one unassuming individual accomplished through his poetry, passion and music. And indeed, for me, after the ruination that Trump imposed on the US, it’s still a massive embarrassment to be an American. If I traveled abroad I’d have to claim Canada as my home.

Some interesting information here (song sung by Reagan and Nixon-ironic), and the song is certainly worth glorifying. I'm reading a biography of Woody by Joe Klein published in 1980 (i'm only up to page 186 of 472), and so far, Woody is a fairly dreadful human being who mistreated many people (many who were helping him), and was especially horrible to his first wife Mary and their kids. One sometimes has to separate an artist's art from the artist him- or herself. Rotten people can make great art, too. Maybe his unpredictable and callous behavior improves as the book goes on. His death was horrible. I had a step relative who suffered and died from Huntington's disease.

I have worked with many people diagnosed with Huntington's Disease. Much of Woody's behavior is attributed to HD. I had a patient whose wife divorced him because she thought he was drinking. He was diagnosed with HD which explained his behavior and "drunken" gait.

This land is your land should & really ought to be the national anthem of the United States which is easy to sing, describes the various regions of the country. I have called my useless, overpaid Congressman’s offices in Washington,DC and Casa Grande,AZ, he never listened to me or the other taxpayers that pay his salary.

Pete Seeger heard about it being the unofficial national anthem, which some people thought should replace The Star Spangled Banner. But Pete said adoption by the US government would be the kiss of death. Leave it be.

that is one of the great attributes of America. Everyone can voice there opinions - communists included (even though they don't realize how fascist they are). Politics aside, Woodie was the greatest folk/country song writer in American history.
