Great job on the build and the video. The power screed might have put some pressure on the form but the crew caught the form movement and corrected it. Good to have spotters during concrete pours.
Good save on the form. This happens with concrete. You always think you have it braced well and then it can still push out. I think you meant to say "power screed" at 7:14 instead of power trowel. Keep the videos coming.
I was planning to build my house with ICF walls and a standard wood framed roof, but after watching this I might look into using the litedeck system as my roof instead. It's a great way to gain some rooftop living space, not to mention making the house a whole lot stronger. With steel reinforced concrete on all sides, this house will still be standing in 250 years!
Exactly! We expect it to be standing for many years to come! If you do the rooftop deck, be sure they slope the concrete so that it all runs off and you don't have any pooling or flat spots.
Love to see what the final exterior plan looks like. Love the concept of utilizing the roof deck as viable outdoor living space. But please tell me the final product isn't just a box... but that it'll have some more to it...

coulda been so much worse! lucky to have an attentive crew like those guys. appreciate the learning opportunity from that minor issue - might double-brace on mine then, same 2x12's on side, but with 2x4's on edge screwed outside of that. do have a *question* for you too : noticed the pour isn't as high as the 2x12 form & there didn't look to be any string lines run across the field; curious how the guys know they've troweled an even slope with a flat surface to prevent pooling (?).
The front concrete elevation is set on the 2x12 and the back elevation is set on the 2x12 and then an elevation pin is set in the middle. They then power screed from the front to the middle and then the middle to the back to ensure the proper elevation and slope.
I want to recommend you rename all of your videos in order to make it easier to stay in order watching this great project. Example instead of Suspended ICF.... Episode 19 Suspended ICF etc. Enjoying your great project. Thanks for sharing.
Hey when you said the concrete is waterproof, did you have to add something to mix at the plant? And what rubber membrane/brand did you end up going with?

We added Xypex to the concrete at the time it was batched. It is not enough to keep the roof from leaking though. We have tried three waterproof paint applications and none have worked perfectly. We will probably just put TPO on the roof now.

maybe they did but you never showed it, why is there no gutter formed in the concrete with four metal drain pans on each corner for a 5" open front down pipe to hook on to later. when they pour a concret roof here they forms have a gutter at the edge of the roof o guid the water off to the corners. they are nice rounded gutters about 6" wide an 4" deep, with a drain pan poured in on ever corner, with out them ether you have to put crappy gutters on the out side or water justruns over every were.. , the front open down spouts keep then from icing up or getting plunged up..
What is the timelime the builder gave for this project? Its taken about 15 weeks to get to this point? - you mentioned the builder was conservative on cure times. I'm guessing the tradesmen will come in and knock things out quickly, but this is seeming to be the pace I would have set for myself as an owner/builder on a 6 month timeline. Do you think the timeline could be sped up for a hired crew like this?
Thanks for watching, Matt! We are the owners/general contractors on this job. We started the actual ICF work with an ICF crew about 8 weeks ago. We have had delays on shipments of block and the LiteDeck. We also have had a terribly rainy Spring. We feel good about the schedule so far. Things will really slow down once it is just me and wife finishing up everything inside. LOL.

Being this is the roof I would think there is a slope to shed the water right? Even being concrete I would think that it would have a small amounted of slope so too much water doesn't set on top the roof while it's raining. I know it will run off even if its flat but if it doesn't get off the roof fast enough couldn't that cause too much weight on the structure and possibly cause it to collapse or possibly damage something? I've worked on flat roofs before but they aren't completely flat. Rubber or tar and gravel roofs are either slopped to gutter outlets on the edge of the roof or gutter drains down the center of the roof. This keeps too much water from accumulating at one time causing problems. I've never worked with or been around when an ICF concrete roof was installed. I'm familiar with the way ICF walls work but not the roof system. guys the amount of labour needed to install the form and the shoring would be cost prohibitive. time is money. Coreslab plus a layer of insulation would have been cheaper.
Unless that's an air/foam-entrained lightweight concrete, 35 cu yards is going to be over *140,000 lbs.* hanging over your head... on beefy 14" deep beams, granted... NOT going anywhere in a strong wind. ;')

So what mix is that? Did they use a lighter weight aggregate since it is the roof? How much water proofing chemical per yard? What psi mix?

Yes! We have a spiral staircase that will be installed on a concrete deck off the back of the house. We will capture it all on film and post here.

you cant do much with a box, a box will always look like a box, this is a much better fit for an under ground home or a shop

Wondering. How do you waterproof a concrete roof? Especially a flat roof?
We used Xypex in the concrete and then rolled a liquid silicone over the entire roof.

We will probably end up going with TPO. None of our waterproof paints have worked

The concrete roof is sloped to the back of the house where we will install a gutter system to divert the water into downspouts and french drains.

It is very difficult to waterproof a roof like this. On my house we just secured a metal roof to it. 5 years later going great still.
We used several products. Some worked and some haven't. Right now we have a silicone -based paint on roof coating that is working great.

How much slope you put on the roof ? Is it like 1/4 inch every feet ?
