My only nit pick is Feed has had an unuasual amount of missed tackles this year. It's not a lot but for Fred it's an unusual amount.
He's had a few. I feel like the biggest issues are uncertainty at the Nickel spot
and dropped INTs

thanks for covering this, this defense is not like Demeco Ryan's last year, where it seemed every game was tailor made for each matchup. But it was also shaky at the beginning of the year and completely turned up towards the middle. Hopefully it'll be the same this year.
That's a good point about early in the year. Ryans defense had some really rough games. In the end, ours is giving up 14.5 PPG.
Yeah, think about that loss to GB when DeMeco Ryans had just taken over from Saleh. That loss had me waaaay more worried for our Defense than this win against the cardinals. That DeMeco Defense turned out to be great, so I'm sure Wilks will iron out the small issues they're having at the moment. Wilks has been around for a while and the players are experienced, they'll adjust appropriately. No need to overreact.

New personnel like Isaiah oliver and Hargrave, new co-ordinator, bosa getting up to speed; also Arizona is a sneaky good, well coached team

Josh Dobbs just doesn’t turn the ball over. The 9ers usually blow games open by scoring off turnovers, since that didn’t happen last week a lot of fans feel like it was way closer than it really was.
Our C3 looks a lot like a Tampa 2, with Fred carrying those deep routes.
It's a similar idea. The Mable has the MIKE more center field and matching #3 so the hook/curl can Match verticals from #2. It's really good against flood concepts.

Thomas has been such a huge liability. He's going to wind up costing points when it matters most. They need to trade for a more capable nickel corner, ASAP.

FR. Saleh willed an average secondary to play beyond their talent. We've had below average CB's for years. It's hard to dial up any pressure without lockdown 1 on 1 guys. Wilks can only do so much.

I think many of the yards Niner D has given up are because of situation. They've had early leads and want to prevent big play to eat clock. You mentioned that Ambry T isn't at his best in these situations. It would be nice to hear situation discussed when applicable in your videos. You do a great job!

My only real "feedback" is while I agree alot of people have been saying "the Niners are playing soft coverage" I dont think everyone means "zone" when they say that. For me, when I say they are playing soft is that even in man they are playing off 5-10 yards and playing bail technique. When they do have someone on the line in press coverage, they are not really pressing. They arent getting their hands on the receiver and delaying them at all (you definitely covered that part).
I know you highlighted a couple aggressive plays and they guessed wrong and guessed on plays that they shouldve known better and maybe thats why they are playing bail technique.
I guess my frustration with Wilkes is the corners on many plays look surprised or flat footed. They dont look confident in what they are doing. Maybe thats our corners coach but the defense looks more like they are winning off of talent not scheme and that when talent doesnt win, the scheme cant help them. Just my two cents. Its only week 4. Lots more to see before anything definitive can be said about the defense.
I kinda hear what you're saying. There aren't many things that annoy me more watching football than seeing a defense in, say, a 3rd and 5 situation, where the closest DBs start 6 yards off the line of scrimmage and then drop another 5 yards after the snap. Like JD said, "you have to know the situation", and "play the situation, not just the man". When I think about the Niners having issues with "soft coverage", I mean the sense that the DBs just aren't ready to drive forward quickly on short routes.
Losing a solid CB and two starter quality edge rushers off your depth chart would have hurt anyone. Drake Jackson is playing very well, but I think we need to be active at the trade deadline and pick up another DE.

Great offense will beat great defense that’s why the QB is the most important and most expensive player on the field. It’s also why the 2nd most important is the left tackle who protects and the left end who is there to stop the QB.

It was conner being able to run when ur able to run u can attack in the pass game but if u cant run the lbs get to close those passing lanes
49ers coverage defense is concerning. I guess they're used to pressure upfront. But if that failed...someone down the field is wide open.

In a lot of your videos last season, you often mentioned how the defense did a great job of disguising coverages, which slowed opposing QBs' reads and gave the pass rush more time to get home. Do you think that's changed at all this year? It seems like that would be one way to help address the lack o'sacks.
A little. But early on we still did a lot of that too
I think the defensive adjustments are still being ironed out with the new DC, no jimmy ward and burks was never the guy in GB. Also the fact that lenior is still a 3rd year coner who is getting better game by game. They are doing what is necessary, applying the clamps, when they need to as they have in the last 3 seasons.
And just like that they make a trade to get depth at OLB!

What are your thoughts on Bosa? Obviously he's doing all he can with being doubleteamed and such. What do you think SF could change to allow him to be more productive/disruptive.
A TON of casual fans think our D-Line is no good due to the relative lack of sacks. They're ignorant. We're stopping the run first and this is more important, and we're also getting a ton of QB pressures and hits. If you go for a sack and give up a run, that is NOT a win. Our line plays very sound football. I guess some fans simply don't understand football.
Hargrave, Armstead and Bosa have been really good, but I do have a feeling Bosa is still getting back into football shape due to missing the offseason. He is improving each week.
Fred has crazy speed and range, especially downfield.
Dre has crazy speed and range, mostly laterally.
Steve has been calling more man coverage than Robert or Meco, and he will be calling more blitzes as he continues to learn the players. He's done very well so far, for someone new to the team.
On the missed coverage td by greenlaw, we shouldn't be running a TE stunt up front on the 8yd line. Takes too long to develop and opens up the line of sight for the qb.
THAT, I can agree with. I'd like to see a little more straightforward there. Let the DL get their hands up if they don't get home. Gonna be a lot of balls on a line in that situation

Ambry Thomas has no ceiling and a cavernous floor. Forces Oliver onto the field and Demo to be right. That’s a risky deal, and Oliver still has a long way to go.

I am nervous about Sunday because i feel like the cowboys are a bit more motivated than the 49ers and the niners are due for their early season "wake up" game they usually have (though not in the Superbowl year!) I do think the defense will be dialed in though because they had a few missed opportunities last week.
The vibe I get from this year's Niner team is they r def not overlooking any game..last year losing to Detroit Denver ATL etc was a wake up call..

That 99 hurt. Every year there is at least 1 game that exposes our defense. I don't like how the pundits are anointing the niners with the damn trophy 4 games in. At least it's early and these things can be addressed. Another great breakdown.
Pundits, fans, and the media have zero to do with play on the field.
Speed is the question. When the SF Defense goes all out, they get there faster and the gains are far less. When they slow down they get scored on.
Two things. One, on the first play. The corner did a great job on the lineman. Second, that move into the ad read was SMOOTH lol.

A lot of people were asking for defensive review but with Purdy setting a comp record I covered every dropback. That took so long I didn't have time to get to the run game but I felt like I couldn't not talk about some of the run game

Yes. Steve Wilks gives up too many yards with the soft zones. Receivers who never got open and RBs who did nothing to us before are now springing out for decent yardage. Giving up big plays and letting offenses score on us. We don’t blitz as much as we did with Demeco Ryans. We let up so many yards to the rams because Puka Nacua is a good rookie receiver, but we used wide open zone coverage that allowed Puka to get open for first downs. It’s not the same defense from last year.

We're actually itzing at a higher rate than DeMeco and playing more man that Ryans did. Don't forget, our D struggled early in the year last year too. We had the worst defensive DVOA performance in team history last year. 372nd out of 372 games
Didn't the Rams and Cards both have 99yard drives vs the Niners.....? If so I would be looking at that footage if they want to sharpen the teeth of the defense 💯 🙋

They will pick up another outside corner before the trade deadline. We are waiting to make sure we don’t have any injuries we need to account for with that cap space. But you can tell Lynch is on the hunt, we just stole Gregory from the Broncos for basically free. They are still paying his salary!

I'm pretty new to watching football, but should Bosa's lackluster amount of sacks an issue? It feels like he doesn't have the same amount of aggressiveness as last season. I mean, he held out so long for his contract so his current performance seems lackluster.
Not at all. He's playing excellent against the run and getting tons of pressures. The sacks will come.

Good defenses don't give up 90+ yard drives to scrub QB's every game. This defense has done just enough to get by based on sheer talent only. But Wilks has them playing back on their heels and scared/not-to-lose way too often. He's sitting way up in the booth and watching everything as teams drive 90+ yards. Wtf is he waiting for?? Make some fucking adjustments! Wilks has been a huge disappointment so far and has this defense playing way below their potential.
