    I feel like optometry and audiology is underrated in uk but seen as really high degree in America or Australia

    Im very big on happiness over money! go with the job that you are going to enjoy doing everyday because you can earn all the money in the world but if youre waking up dreading going to work everyday and its making your life miserable its just really not worth it!

      Totally True. I was a nurse for several years and quickly worked up to earning a great salary but I did not like it. Despite the pay, I dreaded going to work and ultimately decided it’s not for me. You have your whole life to earn money, make it a happy journey.

    Hey, I remember being in this position and wanted to make your life a tad easier. I cant speak much about optom but I can for dentistry. For dentistry, you need to be really passionate, it takes a lot of commitment for both really and you need to make a decision you wont regret. Firstly, be what you want to be, not what others want to see. :) . Secondly, pay for a grad dentist is roughly 30K and if you care about money, go into Maths and not science. Our NHS isn't the best. For you to earn money as a dentist, you would need a private practice but once again that needs a lot of experience and not something that can be done overnight. Dentistry is the most competitive degree in the UK, more so than medicine as there is a lack f unis that do it, which inevitably also means higher grade boundaries, and a tough interview process. With dentistry comes a heck of a lot of stress, so if you're good with stress go for it! As for anyone thinking about medicine, in the UK I generally dont see the point unless you really want to operate,ect. There are other hospital jobs that may be better, eg radiography so consider that. I don't know how it is for optom, but for dentistry there is a high risk of being sued, and its not always fun and game; i remember during my work experience someones tongue got in the way with one of the ultrasonic equipment and got split in half with a lot of bleeding, do you think you could deal with such situations in a calm manner? I realised I'd panic way too much. Another example was someone had an epileptic attack or fit and their mouth got snap shut so it requires you to think fast. With dentistry you can specialise in a lot more, but that also means a lot more education. eg maxillofacial, orthodontics, endodontics... so there is a wide scope for you to pick something. In terms of jobs, where i was working there was about 100 applicants for the 1 dentist job, so unis already competitive, imagine the job! It is a very rewarding profession and you do work with people, see people on a regular and people do respect you which are the pros. You can end up making money later on in life, but money comes and goes. Make sure you do whatever feels right to you, not what Pushpa down the road thinks. :)

      I went to quite a few radiography taster days! I feel that people pick med for the wrong reasons or because of the title of Dr that they gain. I was just trying to say that you can still get a job working in hospitals if it is something that appeals to an individual without being an actual Dr, for example radiography and physiological science + more. Our NHS isnt the best tbh and thats what I was reaching towards, if someone is money minded then medicine/dentistry possibly might not be for them as Maths and Econ will get them their £. As long as an individual is doing Med/Dent because theyre genuinely passionate Im totally fine with it. Issue is, people don't know the harsh reality of what theyre dealing with! Hope this helps, good luck!

    Youre passionate, beautiful, well educated, and I can feel even through a screen that you're such a loving and caring person. This is literally the first video I found from you. I've been considering a medical career these past few years ever since middle school. Entering my senior year of high school the time is coming for me to truly make my choice. And tbh I had taken a career analysis thing and they put me in dentistry but, I don't know it just, doesn't feel quite right... yes, money is a factor for me. But I know that time and again it's been proven that money doesn't link to ones happiness. It usually ends up biting and biting them hard. I just want a job where I can help people and make the world a better place. You've honestly made me consider optometry. If it's supposedly less school than dentistry I mean, I'm all for it because, Yanno, student loans. But you've got me thinking. Truly thinking about where I might be best fit. Because I want to get out and make a difference as soon as possible. That's all I want. And since optometry is still something medical since it pertains to the eyes. And being a practice owner is applicable, i may very well consider. I see (hah unintentional pun) eyes as such, beautiful things. Their varying colors and reactions are unique to every person. And there's also the entire spiritual aspect of eyes and the intimacy they can lead to. I hadn't considered optometry as a profession. But now I very well might. Thank you. Btw, you've easily earned yourself a new subscriber ;). Keep being beautiful and loving your life and what you do. Thank you for being you.

      Hi there, i'm in the same position as you and i am currently thinking about my choices for career paths. I know this is 6 years later but what did you end up picking and how do you find it?

    • @lailanityler2380
      @lailanityler2380 3 місяці тому

      @@kayy2007cx Hello to you~!
      After finishing out my high school education and spending 5 years obtaining an undergraduate diploma, I’ve actually shifted myself away from the ‘doctoral’ line of thinking entirely and am instead pursuing a career as a licensed professional counselor in private practice. It aligns much more with my values, desires, and- just, what I want out of life.
      I don’t know if you’re still in high-school or not, you may still be in undergrad- in either case, my advice to you is this:
      Have an initial goal in mind, but be open to change in trajectory as experience new things and grow. I know that sort of notion literally SUCKS because there’s no certainty in it- but,I mean-
      Is anything in life ever 100% certain?
      I decided on changing up my trajectory just under a month before finishing my degree in psychology (with a minor in bioethics) after a eureka moment that occurred at literally like 1 am, and already things are falling into place much more cleanly than they would have, otherwise.
      As far as what was going through my head, in my shift?
      I had a moment where I realized what I truly enjoyed, in my studies (physiological and health psychology)- I realized that I was GOOD at those classes and the material within it. And I really sat with myself and thought: “what do I want, out of life?”
      So, I thought about it. And my through-line in life has always been helping people with their mental health as it is important to me and I find the concepts of health and wellness fascinating as a field. While a doctorate COULD have given me a lot of what I wanted- the LPC route gives me all that and more (less debt overall, less stress in pursuit of my goal and admissions, more relaxed approach to professional life, etc.), so- that’s ultimately where I’m headed. For the longest time I sought to get overqualified, essentially- and realized that, wasn’t what I needed to be happy/financially secure.
      Again, I don’t know what stage of life you’re at- but be it highschool or your undergraduate degree in college-
      You have time, space, and room to grow into the person you’ll be however many years from now, and odds are that person’ll be different than the one you are right now, that’s not a BAD thing, but it’s something to keep in mind. So long as you have your through-line, and you align yourself with that- you’ll know what to do when the time is right.
      Hope this helps 💖

    I seriously hate when people say "its not as prestigious" as a reason to not pursue a field. You either like it or you don't who cares what people think about it? I'm american and going into Optometry and people always think we arent doctors but we go to school for 8 years so think again!

    • @nostalgia545
      @nostalgia545 Рік тому +2

      The fact that Optometry isn’t considered as prestigious as dentistry makes me hesitant to go into Optometry. It’s not just if you like it, you also need to consider growth in the field, your potential income (those loans won’t pay themselves), and how you feel about each other.

      Bazoka 98 the entrance requirements are quite strict - but they're there because the number of applicants is huge.
      Within the UK there is the Dental Therapist. They are more qualified then hygienist and can carry out restorations, take X-rays as well as hygiene work. Some places offer honours degrees and others don't - but still a very good option!

    Actually, Optometrists are doctors as are dentists. In the USA you need a professional degree ( MD, DO, DDS/DMD, OD, PharmD, and DVM [physician, Osteopathic phy, dentist, optometrist, pharmacist, and veterinarian respectively]) or PhD to gain the title. Thanks for the Video Dr. Trisha!

    • @Jetdot37
      @Jetdot37 4 роки тому +1

      Cirus Shiran in New Zealand you can do professional degrees as undergraduate! So you can be a practising veterinarian by minimum 22 years old. Minimum 21 for a Pharmacist, about 24 as a doctor. Etc! Also your loans are so much less than the states.

    It’s very different in the philippines. Optometrists are paid a lot even if you’re not board passer. That maybe because there are only few who graduate and this scarcity is what made optometrists in-demand. Plus, the work in retails is very mediocre that you’ll surely either get you bored or make you just wanna stay because you ‘re lazy. The only place you can practice what you’ve learned is eye center or clinic wherein you work with ophtahlmologists but, the salary is quite low. On the other hand, in dental clinics, one patient takes you great energy and long time. And, god the salary is so low you’ll envy what optometrists earn. To give you figures: optometrist earns 60k-110k unlike dentist earn 30-45k.

  • @faction52

    i would argue with the fact that dentistry is more prestigious than optometry. in the Uk, that can be the publics perception but then it comes to us Optoms to change that. we are looking after our patients eyes at the end of the day and we only have 2!

    all the reasons you mentioned that made you pick optometry as career are similar to mine. I would like to be in Dr related field where I can easily manage work/life balance and where I don't have to think about work when I get home. Here in USA, after high school it takes 8 years to become optometrist (and one year of optional residency) just like to become dentist. Therefore, I was little annoyed :P when you said that you don't being called as "Dr"
