- Welcome viewers! Today I am going to give an introduction to Ragnarok Online. This is a 20 year old game released in 2002 by Gravity Inc. I hope this video shines some light on a very iconic game that is still going to this day. This is coming from the perspective of the International release and not the Korean release. I cannot sum up everything into a 10 minute video, but I will give it a shot.
In September, Ragnarok Online received the 4th job update! I was excited to give it a try and see if I can get a character on my original account to the max level.

In Thailand, level 200 is now approaching on November 30th. And the 4th job might come next year. And even though I'm 40+ I still play this game lol.
i began to replay RO again and that theme plays in prontera will give me goosebumps and all nostalgia flooding in like a tsunami.... i guess i also shed a tear or two remembering the old days.
I've been playing RO since 2002. Midgard is my second home.
To this day I still believe Renewal was the biggest mistake ever made. If I wanted to see unrecognizable damage numbers I'd just play a private high rate server.
Pretty sure it was getting their original source code leaked before they even launched, but I'm with you on Renewal being garbo
Someone once said you don't quit Ragnarok Online, you just AFK a loooong time. Yeah RO is that one game I just can't seem to quit playing. Been playing since 2003, moved to iRO in 2010. Funnily enough I avoided playing Rogue classes back in the day coz I thought Crusaders were cooler but today I main a Shadow Chaser. RO's not perfect and the game feels crude/antiquated in comparison to most MMOs but imo nothing compares to RO's wild west sandbox experience.

I’ve played at other servers to check the classes while they were releasing, and every time I’ve returned to the game it was magical. It’s something that simply can’t be put into words.
I have ao many great memories with this game and playing with friends.

I wish. I remember the first Christmas release for iRO. I used to farm the poring boss in the first level of the cookie factory. Good times.

Ha, ya right. I was playing during pandemic, saved up 300mil to buy a item, turned out it was a cloned item. and it disappeared after a patch. The customers service was condesending to me asking me if i accidentally trash the item when he should have just done his job and checked the logs. i was pissed and quit.

After many years i just recovered my old account on iRO and started playing again, its different that it was used to be. theres a lotta new stuff, equip, places, and so on. Its been fun, i dont have the time i used to have when the game was released but its still a find fun playing it
Out of the blue today I started downloading the steam version. Just a few minutes later this video showed on my feed.

I was just thinking the other day about how I might start playing RO again. Funny how my youtube had this video recommended.
GL man. I played in alpha and beta. I tried to get back in but all the grinding I remember just turned me off. So many other new games out as well.
The most memorable moment of me in-game, is leveling in Glasthiem Underground Prison 1... it was intense... your party should stay in one spot, and members have their roles to play, healers ahud stay inside the spot, tanks would lure mobs and dps like hunter/wizards do the main dps... if you die without being redirected by a priest, it's gonna be a long trip back, or else have to beg or warp by priests 😂 those days were so much fun!
I’ve come to the conclusion that, the original RO won’t be dead UNLESS those LYTO leeches made a new game similar to Genshin right now. If not, the OG will still have a player on different servers either official or private one. Because the concept and the versatility are just too good for the sandbox type game.
The idea was above their time really…. ❤
I just started playing my beta character this week! I lost access to the account so I made a new account for official launch but I got it unlocked by the GMs a few years ago when I was consolidating my accounts in warp portal.
I started playing RO back in the beta, but after years playing (before Renewal) I stopped. It's good to see a video explaining everything that happens and, if you not release the video explaining what happened in Renewal yet, please do! I've been trying to find information on what happened after I stopped for a long time and no one is able to explain :(
Renewal game mechanics are explained on the player-run info site IROWIKI which is for the official International RO game (IRO). Come back and see how the game has changed a lot. Some of the new areas have great stories such as the quest series for The Royal Banquet, Terra Gloria, and Illusion. Some of the new areas have amazing designs as RO artwork goes.
I remember this when I was in high school. I played it non stop until I reached 99.

I pine for the days where people just "got" RO with it's party focus, grindy nature, but I'm most saddened by the fact that there hasn't really been a game that has tried to expand on what it put down. It is still very unique and there's nothing like it. If I had to describe RO it would be a Massive Atmospheric Diablo game, way different from the Ultima/Everquest descended MMOs that became the default. I was super excited for tree of savior but ultimately disappointed in what it became, just another soulless whaling expedition.
The closest I've played to matching the atmosphere is FF14, but even that feels like you're stuck on a procedurally generated treadmill if you look for too long. There's just nothing that can compare to the handcrafted, Dungeon Master style experience early RO felt like.
Imagine a 1-1 conversion of RO into a 3rd person action combat MMO (like PSO2:NGS styled combat) but in the latest graphics, cell shaded like Honkai/Genshin. Like 1-1 conversions with how the classes/levels are, and all the mobs, world, systems and everything that could be made into a sigle, open world or open-zoned world (again, like how PSO2:NGS does their zones, with seamless loads).
That sounds awful! The charm of ragnarok online is the graphics and the combat style. I would never want it to turn into some BDO clone, thats what happened when they tried to turn it into a wow clone with ragnarok 2, complete trash.

you have a similar history with ro as me, only difference is that i dabbled in p servers a couple of times. Recently i picked up my old iro account and made it to level up my main character to 4th job. Good luck!

4:40 I remember back then playing this game, the grinding is super hard and tiring. My friend easily say "0.1% exp per minute is a lot", but what going on my mind was how much money I have to spend on voucher and pc rental to just get 1 level up (my friend is rich, so he probably didn't think it that way 😂).

No, they have the 3rd and 4th jobs for the main classes, but not the extended classes.
Ro Prime is a nice server too.

There was a spinoff title that played similarly for the Nintendo DS. There was also Ragnarok Tactics for the PSP and Ragnarok Odyssey Ace for the Vita and PS3. All a bit different, but yeah. It would have been nice for a console release of the MMORPG.

That's really sad to hear. I know the EU has had some terrible experience with playing the game. I believe you can still get the game through their download. I just cant remember if you need a VPN to play. Warpportal can be a pain.

Are you sure it was free to play here in the states? Assuming you're from the states. iRO in the west was never free to play during closed beta. You had to send a check for $20 for 3 months of play. It only became free during the open beta in which progress from the closed beta copied over to open and then to the launch.
I still have my original closed beta disc and the release disc with the soundtrack. I don't remember paying for the closed beta, I just remember lying about my age because the NDA said you had to be over 18 and I was 16 in 2002. I know the open beta was free to pay.
@@theoperator288 You probably played during the original beta period from 12/2001 until summer 2002? After that the beta closed until the paid closed beta opened up for 01/2003 or so until like 06/2003 when it went open beta for like 2 months then finally opened pay to play. I played during the closed paid beta and into the free to play. Progress carried over from closed to f2p and then into p2p. I quit after they started charging monthly sub. I was too young and couldn’t afford it.
@@will8677 You could be 100% correct. I do remember my OG characters being removed once the beta ended. I'll do a bit of testing to see which server each character was made on since they all have the _L/_C/_S endings.
Just go private server pre renewal. The fun is still there.

tbh, the best remake was Ragnarok Origins PC/Mobile. JUST THAT IT WAS EFFING P2W.
Origins had the best modern anime-like graphics similarly to classic RO. mvp hunting was fun, GVG designs are INSANE GOOD. Fair mix between dungeons and field bosses hunting.
JUST TOO MANY P2W FEATURES. THE REFINING IS INSANE P2W.
Eternal Love is p2w, but not as heavy as origins, especially the first few years. the Gacha 1% ATK MATK deposit system broke the game progressively (imagine a whale with 200% bonus ATK AND MATK compared to f2p with say 30% by default). the woe and woc is fun as hell, but graphics not as nice as origins
HOWEVER, eternal love is coming out with a much less P2W SERVER. ALTHOUGH you can buy zeny via real money, its impact is little af end game. They removed all other p2w features too, no gacha etc.

Renewal is the biggest downfall of this game, i know an update are needed to keep players playing, but Renewal job damage put a lot of OG players off. like dying within 1 seconds is not what Ragnarok used to be.
That is why private server who still uses classic mechanics are even more populated than officials servers, and i still play in the private server classic with > 600 active players during WoE

Ouch. I think that is a bit bleak. Yes, the game is not like it once was. But that doesn't mean you cannot have fun. Believe it or not, the additions to the game have been pretty steady.
Gravity isnt perfect and they have a lot of missed steps from the past. I just think we can still enjoy the game.
Private servers are infinity better.
Yeah, but they go up and down like flies. I'm not saying they are bad, but I like the official since it is stable. I might dabble in some low rate servers once I finish the series. Private allows more versatility as well.
RO used to be a good game, however it didnt improve itself like Nokia..
They should improve its engine (like dota from wc3 to their own engine), constantly balance the game (like dota and albion), maintain the nostalgic music, listen to the community.
Instead, they focus on those auto questing auto botting in mobile RO, milking the mobile players with weapon of no limit/costume.
It's still a top3 game in my heart, but not a playable game in 2023
you spend most the video talking about the past, i think the game is dead. it sucks to let go, but no one else cares anymore sadge
People need to forget about online games, yeah we had good times, but the game is dead and life must move on, we need to wake up to real life and go work endless hours on our daily jobs or end up in some god damn war, this is basically the truth of TODAY, these days will never be back !

Gravity doesnt understand their own ip and its sucess. Sure you can make mobile games but without developing the original its like growing green branches but starving the trunk of all nutrients.
