  • A boat floats calmly in a partly filled aquarium. The boat's anchor is thrown overboard but, due to shoddy construction techniques, it does not reach the bottom of the aquarium. What happens to the level of the water?

a ship weighs 1000 kg say you have an anchor volume 10 liters density uranium or gold 20 so weighs 200kg system weighs 1200 kg displaces 1200 litres on the boat.
you throw it over and weighs 190 kg displacing 10 ltr so de system weighs 1190 kg displaces 1190 ltrs plus 10 ltr displaced by the anchor, displacement is 1200 ltrs.... YOU ARE RIGHT!!

now ,SAME SHIP weighs 1000 kg plus an anchor 10 ltr density close to the water, total weigh 1010 kg, displacement 1010 ltr, you throw it over , is like you throw over 10 ltr of water, the ship weighs 1000 kg displaces 1000 ltrs plus 10 ltr. you threw overboard level remains the same. you are right, sorry, wil check previous thinking.

This is why I thought the answer to last week's one should have been: D. It depends on the depth of the water.

Yes, it depends on the depth of the water in so much as that determines whether or not the anchor will reach the bottom. But, since we're stating if the anchor reaches the bottom or not in the set-up, the actual depth of the water shouldn't be a consideration. So, yeah, if you chuck an anchor overboard and don't know if the chain is long enough, then what the water level does and what the draft of the boat does absolutely depends on the depth of the water (or, equally, it depends on the length of the string/rope/chain).

@@JeffersonLab haha Oh so you're saying I missed the part where you clearly say "...and comes to rest on the bottom of the aquarium?"
I need to work on my attention to detail.
