- Yesterday morning, Shadow returned to the nest to discover that the eggs were no longer there. He looked confused and concerned about this and stared at the nest bowl for long minutes. He looked around the nest, searching, but found nothing. He stayed for about 10 minutes, without any of his usual stick rearranging. He seemed to be trying to process this new situation. Then he flew off to one of the nearby perch trees where Jackie was sitting.
At the perch tree, instead of joining Jackie near the top, Shadow tucked himself into a lower part of the tree. Jackie climbed down to him and they spent a few minutes being quietly close. It looked like Jackie understood his sadness and spent time consoling him. Both of them have shown this same behavior in the past when something unexpected happened with the eggs. Jackie seems be better at accepting the sad situations more quickly and being able to move on. And she appears to be aware that Shadow cannot and works to assist him with his process of coming to acceptance.
In the afternoon, Shadow returned to the nest. He checked the nest bowl again, just in case anything might have changed. He gently moved a little stick and some fluff in the nest bowl, trying to return to a bit of his normal routine. But he could not do more. He stayed at the nest for over two hours, just staring and watching the surroundings of the nest tree.
For anyone who has not seen the past couple posts, Jackie and Shadow, with Jackie’s encouragement, realized that these current eggs were not going to hatch. They left the eggs unattended for two days and the local ravens found them and ate them, cleaning up the nest completely. Yesterday was Shadow’s first visit back to the nest since that happened.
Yes, animals do have emotions. We do not know if they are similar to ours, but in situations that we would call an ‘emotional moment,’ their behavior changes completely from their normal activities. In every ‘normal’ day, Shadow cannot resist bringing sticks or checking and rearranging the sticks already in the nest-today, he could not get himself to do more than trying to move one tiny stick in the nest bowl even though he spent hours at the nest. Jackie and Shadow are definitely processing something in a different way than they had been and not simply moving on to normal daily activities. Just like when your dog leaps up or wags his tail to greet you, their behavior changes according to the situation. Only they can know exactly what is going on inside them.
For those of you feeling sad about the eggs, please allow the sadness, allow whatever you are feeling. It will pass, just like it will for Jackie and Shadow. And we will all move on to watch and see what we will get to observe and learn next.

What a beautiful description of the recent behavior of Shadow and Jackie. Watching Shadow on the nest and seeing his seemingly perplexed gaze at where the eggs used to be, I wondered if his actions were driven by hormone, instinct and simple habit. But reading about how he later sat alone on the tree, apart from Jackie and how he didn’t carry out his usual stick arrangement behaviors really brings to light how deeply he’s been affected, beyond what could be natural nesting instinct. I’ve only been watching them since the start of the storm, so it’s all new to me. I’m very grateful for all that can be observed and learned by this pair and their habitat, as well as the awesome folks that allow the world to witness this beauty through the cams and their thoughtful observations and descriptions. All reactions of every living thing on this planet comes down to chemistry, which drives the various chemicals that we call “hormones”. The eagles have very similar chemistry to us when we talk about bearing/raising young. According to experts, brooding hormones allow the very busy eagles to remain in one spot for hours while brooding… just like hormones make human moms sleepy and protective, and human dads have sudden urges to visit Home Depot :).
The ravens helped the process of ridding the eagles’ bodies of these brooding chemicals, but I think the levels drop differently from male to female ( I am not an Eagle expert). Hopefully they will enjoy clutching hormones again this season.

Have to admit I totally cried 😭. It's a couple mourning a pregnancy loss. To watch a pair of birds mourn the loss is heartbreaking. Been there and have done that and can relate to the pain

what happened to the babies?
they just didn't hatch. could've been a fertility problem or something else. J&S eventually realized this and they left the eggs, letting ravens scavenge them. hopefully they'll try again!

@@pao5320 A crazy cold front hit them. It was just too cold for the eggs, likely. Poor Shadow & Jackie gave it all they could.. even getting buried in the snow to keep on those two eggs:(

Wow What a Beautiful Couple. My First year watching them. They have a lasting place in my heart now. My wife and I just recently went through a miscarriage and It pains me to see them go through this. What strong parents they were to never give up during the blizzard. They will prevail and comeback strong 🙏
This close-up of Shadow, and all his time spent there like he was keeping a moment of silence, was so powerful, emotional! We could see his shoulders moving up and down while breathing, almost like a human.. and his eyes 😍 And yes Sandy, I felt sad and I know that it will pass and nature will follow its course.. Ok, until this I've been thinking folks were over the top commenting about eagle grief: I stand greatly corrected. This was terribly poignant to see. What was equally moving was finding out how much of a team these two birds really are.

@@codydavidyates72 it was heartbreaking. I have been following for a little over a month now. I cried hard too and felt such a sinking feeling. Definitely going to continue following these two big, beautiful birds. Hopefully we will have successes of hatchlings in the future.
Also, this was incredibly unfortunate to have that horrible weather move in exactly when it did. Nature works in mysterious ways.
Such beautiful birds. Majestic and a symbol of our country. Nothing hurts more than losing little ones. I can’t even imagine what they must feel as they must move on and continue their own lives. These birds will never know how much love and hope surrounds them. Perhaps there is a lesson in there somewhere for all of us.

Poor Shadow. Man if that doesn't put a lump in your throat nothing will. These birds, I believe, comprehend loss and grieve. Their entire existence is based on growing, thriving, and reproduction. The fact that they are absolutely beautiful magnificent creatures is an added bonus. I've learned so much from this nest and the others I follow. M15 has shown me as well that males are capable of the bonding seen between the mommas and chicks. I will never forget how he covered his E's during a rainstorm with his wings after we lost Harriet and the chicks were still so young. I have faith that the Creator above is in control and what is meant to be will be. I can't help but be honest and say I'd really love to see these two lay another clutch this season. Thank you to everyone whose hard work, time, skill, and love go into providing these webcams for all of us to see. I feel blessed to even be able to have a glimpse into the real world of these eagles without interference from man. Your work is so highly appreciated, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart.
Shadow having a difficult time moving on, versus Jackie moving on and helping him accept and recover... It's just like how in humans if someone moves on faster, they will help those they love who are still grieving. These birds feel more than we will ever know, their expressions harder to discern for us, but i can tell they feel this loss. Amazing to see such creatures affected by an unsuccessful nest bowl and the different ways they process and move on.
I am glad Jackie and Shadow have each other to help one another. An incredible team-- they will try again, and they will be okay. So will we. 💖

It was comforting to learn that the eggs never developed, although it saddened me to see Shadow looking back at the eggs when he first made the decision to leave the nest, and now, as he returns to check out the nest. If the eggs had hatched, they may not have made it through the storms. Shadow and Jackie now have another opportunity (I believe) to be the amazing parents they are. Can’t wait to see their new clutch! ❤

The Ravens were very respectful of the nest and cleaned up.
@@AlisonsArt They had been multiple times and thought twice like it was a trap lol, given the strength and tenacity of the Eagles. But I am glad they allowed the Eagles to move on past this and also gained some protein in the process. I like Ravens as well they are very intelligent and we have a pair we feed and interact with locally that will eat from our hand.

Aww It’s going to take a while for Shadow to get use to the eggs not being there! Just like it will for all of us! Keep fingers & toes crossed that Jackie will lay 2 more eggs in the next couple weeks, like she has been known to do before! But if she doesn’t, we always have next season to look forward to! It just breaks my heart for papa Shadow though! If only human fathers carried that much about their unborn kids like eagles do!

Oh us future fathers we care about our unborn kids we just apparently can’t say much because of the “my body my choice” if a woman wants to abort a child we literally have no say in wanting to keep the baby both legally and emotionally. Us fathers don’t have many rights when it comes to unborn children you’d be called out as misogynistic if you want to keep the baby and she wants to abort it.

The loss of the eggs is sad. However, given that the weather has been so brutal in BB perhaps a blessing in disguise...can you imagine if the eggs hatched trying to feed and protect chicks from the elements would have been...a treacherous journey..Let's hope better nest times to come for our awesome Jackie & Shadow and beautiful strong eaglets in their future ❤️

The gerbil visiting the nest is so kind. If humans could be that sensitive, what a world we would live in.
Humans are infinitely more sensitive than wild eagles, who literally gore their meals to death or steal them from other starving animals and sit through literal blizzards on eggs that have a disproportionate chance of never hatching anyways, and then keep doing it even when failing. I don't think sensitivity is a trait that eagles really possess in vast quantities haha
I think you're referring to Fiona, the flying squirrel. But, thank you...for making me smile through the tears, imaging wild gerbils at Big Bear Valley.
I love this, thank you Sandy for validating what I and most other people are feeling with our magnificent eagles. I feel that if they can love and protect, they can feel loss. 😭 They will move on and try again...
Even though I'd accepted the situation, this brought tears. Seeing Shadow's confusion and sadness cracks my heart open, especially when there is no meaningful way to offer comfort. Grief is a powerful thing to be so easily seen and understood amongst all who experience it. This too shall pass, but in the present, I'll unashamedly feel for Shadow and Jackie as they process a loss that is clearly upsetting for them.

Thank you for your summary and words of comfort, Sandy. It was truly heavy, very hard to watch Shadow go through the process of grief. I noticed his "chirps" were a bit different from his normal sounds. I also observed Jackie grieving in her own way. Both "wing-slapped" the ravens who perched next to them - my interpretation was these ravens "confessed" their "deed" - my private levity - and they were "slapped" for it 😄😉
I have been watching this nest for two years now was in awe of watching Spirit born last year and it saddens me that Jackie and shadow have lost this year’s clutch. I used to live in those mountains and it’s been a tough winter to watch what’s happening But for these beautiful eagles to lose their eggs is heartbreaking. Hopefully they will have another clutch.
I tuned in a couple of times, and there’s no way those eggs could have been viable left exposed to the cold and the wind for as long as they were. I have a feeling they kind of must’ve known. I’m 55 and down in Pasadena but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a winter like this before with snow on the mountains for this long.

My heart breaks for these two shadow always tends to take a while to let go and I understand it’s nature but the way us humans think I wish I could just give him a big hug and let him know it’s OK and they can start over and try again and will succeed I think it was probably for the best the storms were awful. It was really soon after spirit for her to have a clutch and eventually hopefully they will experience it soon but it does take shadow a little longer. He is so awesome and Jackie deserves to be a mommy again because they are great, she’s had some rough times with her clutches. I love these two very much. They are awesome love you, Jackie and shadow, wishing the best and trust the Eagles.
I only recently found this site and watched only 3-4 videos but already have become very attached to Jackie and Shadow. This made me cry. I am so sad for them.
I know he’s sad. He wants to be a dad once again. And such a great dad he is. Just watching him looking at where the eggs used to be broke my heart. Only him & Jackie decided whats best. But he just couldn’t resist coming back to the nest to grieve. I know they have feelings too.

Yes, my heart broke for shadow. Such a sensitive guy. As sad as this was, they’ve showing some interesting behavior. Tidying up the nest and I thought maybe they were going to mate. Fingers crossed 😊

It’s heartbreaking to see him look down and then all around.
It's really difficult to see this and not feel that he's experiencing loss. But I think a lot of humans give weight to his reaction that may not approximate his actual feelings. (And I'm not giving them short shrift.)
