  • For my first ever guest, the once-Leaping, self-proclaimed smartest man in wrestling, "The Genius" Lanny Poffo, was kind enough to sit back in his Ecuadorian beachfront apartment and chat to yours truly for almost an hour and a half! Many topics are covered, including Lanny touching on International Championship Wrestling with his father and brother Macho Man Randy Savage, memories of Andre the Giant, disappointment at not making the WrestleMania III card, heat with Rick Rude, the most dangerous wrestlers he ever worked with, appearing in main events with Hulk Hogan, his non-WCW run as Gorgeous George, his commentary tryout with New Japan Pro Wrestling and, of course, his issues with Hannibal.
Exclusive content includes memories of Rowdy Roddy Piper, The Iron Sheik, his father Angelo "The Masked Miser" Poffo and working the Detroit territory. Enjoy!

The Genius was so awesome! I learned about wrestling watching new gen, but then renting older pay per views. He got tons of heat from me as a kid! Then i rented tapes where he was wrestling and was like "the Genius can't wrestle...oh shit, he really can."
Great heel, great worker, phenomenal talker. Long live Lanny! He could have carried bigger angles, but he'll be remembered forever just with the little he was given.

Lanny is always so self-effacing and modest about his career and abilities but, I will tell you what, he was an unbelievably talented athlete. Just watch his SNME match with Hogan to see his gymnastic abilities. He was unbelievably balanced, agile and flexible. Honestly, I think he may be one of the most criminally underrated heels.

The other shoot interview I have seen with Lanny consisted mainly of questions about Randy. It wasn't very good, because Lanny is too much of a gentleman to gossip about his brother. You are a good interviewer, because you talked to Lanny about Lanny.

It's a pleasure to listen to Lanny speak. If he never made it as a wrestler, he could easily win it as a motivational speaker. His sarcasm and poetry alike are right on the money!

I'm going back and listening to interviews Lanny did. I was very shocked and saddened to hear of his passing yesterday. I talked with him through Facebook a few times and he was a very humble and good guy. He was very witty and had a great sense of humor. I always thought he was an underrated worker in the ring and he could draw big heat as a heel. I'm so glad you got to interview Lanny, what an interview for your first. I will miss him but I am happy he is finally reunited with his mother, father and and brother Randy. Rest easy Lanny, you were one of a kind.

This is likely going to go down as his best overall interview. So glad you were able to get this James. It slays me that he has memorized the verses he delivered even at TV tapings. That poem at 50:42 comes from my favorite tv taping from WWF. I did not know until long after I stopped watching wrestling that in the late 70's Lanny and Randy both spent time where I am at in Nova Scotia, working for Atlantic Grand Prix. RIP The Genius.

I used to watch ICW every Friday night on WSIL-3, an ABC affiliate in Harrisburg, IL (mentioned around 37:00). Every month, I attended their show at the National Guard Armory in Paducah, KY. They also ran Mayfield, KY, Cape Girardeau, MO, Marion, IL, Champaign, IL, Springfield, IL and others that were within driving distance of my home. When ICW was running, I was between the ages of 17 to 21, so I was independent enough to not have to depend on others to take me and I had a core group of friends that all attended the shows.

Lanny handled his lot in life quite well I think. Sure, he wasn't his brother, but not many were. Lanny had a long career and had solid technical wrestling skills and in terms of acrobatics, he was really up there. He stood in his own right and he had some fine moments in the ring.

I think what put Randy Savage and him in the WWE was their run in Memphis where they did amazing business. They were turning fans away from the matches they were so hot. Then Vince poaches Jimmy Hart from Memphis and Hart says "the best wrestler in the world is wrestling in Memphis and his name is Randy Savage."
Supposedly, from what I have heard, Randy wanted to go but not if it left Jerry Jarrett (who had given them a lifeline after ICW failed) in a bad spot. Jarrett asked for two weeks to ease Randy out of the territory and the rest is history.

There is actually job guys that would work local or once or twice like most who faced Road Warriors in Studio Shows. They will also wear a mask or have pro football player or somebody. An Actual Enhancement Talent knows spots is laying in right position not having to scoot over. Steve Lombardi before Brooklyn Brawler would win, guys like Barry O, Horowitz, Steele. Lenny was Doink at times besides Genius for like a middle or lower guy. I remember that Hannibal Blood Hunter thing many don't like him in RL. I can't imagine living in Ecuador :). Kinda disappointed there were no Mid South questions....the WWF stuff has been done to death, nothing to learn there, but almost nothing is known about how he felt about working with Watts, the anticipated but never consummated angle and program with Randy and Magnum TA and a lot more from ICW and Memphis....sadly we will never know now. We already know all the stuff about WWF and WCW from a bunch of sources. I really appreciated Lanny's contributions to my wrestling fandom in both ICW and Memphis, because there he was on top and doing a great job. RIP Lanny

at 8:37 Lanny says "I don't like to speak ill of the dead..." but then seconds later Lanny says "I have never seen anybody abuse their body with more drugs than (Roddy) did". So much for not speaking ill of the dead!

    • @mercoid

He spoke truth…, and I’m sure without any I’ll will towards Roddy. One can make a truthful observation without hate. It is apparent that Lanny has the wisdom to recognize the nuances of human relationships while you sill have a few things to learn.

    • @NicoTineman
      @NicoTineman 2 роки тому

@@mercoid If Lanny wanted to speak the truth.. he might have mentioned that his own brother Randy "Macho Man" Savage used so many steroids and other drugs - in an attempt to build himself up for another match against Hulk Hogan, that he pickled his own heart, causing his heart attack, where he ran into a tree across the street from Publix in Seminole Florida. Lanny might have mentioned the drug use of Randy's ex-wife Elizabeth that caused her demise. Lanny might have mentioned his OWN drug use that did things such as caused his hands to swell up to the point of not being able to hold a pen. Roddy Piper's main problem was that he was mentally ill.

    • @toddmorrissey8372
