NOTE: Since January 2024, all Messenger conversations have been automatically encrypted by default. This means deleting a conversation just deletes chat messages from the chat list but you can't remove or disable end-to-end encryption from Messenger starting in 2024.

If ALL CONVERSATIONS have been automatically encrypted, then why i have this thing just on 1 conversation, and none other?
You're right, as of January 2024, all Messenger conversations are encrypted by default. However, there are a few reasons why you might see the "encryption shield" icon or text only on specific chats.
1. You are using an older version of Facebook Messenger.
2. Your friend may used an older version of Messenger.
3. Or there may be a technical problem with your Messenger account.

This makes me SO angry. Messenger put this on with no thought for how it effects people. Now I cant seen to send or receive a message unless I use some Pin, that I dont have, and no way to change the Pin unless you have a Pin. All instructions say to delete chat, why would I do that and look contact with the person who is helping me with an issue via messenger

Great. I lost my entire chat history with my best friend, and if I want to talk with them again the chat is STILL end-to-end encrypted. This feature is such bullshit.
I don't want to delete the conversation!!! I know this sounds overly-dramatic, but I would die if I lost my years of chats with my dear friend now that Messenger encrypted it without my permission. This is very misleading - the heading is how to REMOVE ENCRYPTION but what this video actually shows is removing the (encrypted) chats instead - NOT the actual encryption!?? I don't want to delete my chats, I want to be able to send messages!! I have had almost all of my contacts encrypted & it wont even send my messages now & i'm not receiving any from those contacts either - it is a ridiculous 'protection' that completely stuffs up messenger. If it's not broken don't fix it!!
This makes no sense... literally only 'one' of my contacts have this enabled on my device. None of my other contacts have this end to end encryption activated.

I have a problem in Android Messenger App that seems to be related to encryption.
When I tap on any media file (video, audio, photo, or even URL) in a chat thread the reaction bar pops up but I can't open the file in the chat. I can choose to download the file, but this is complicated and I don't see what's the sense of it. If I do this in a non-encrypted chat I can still open the file there. I guess that would be normal. Any suggestion?

That happened when FB forced install end to encrypted on one of your chat friends, it also has the same problem with mine cannot click on anything it goes to emoji bar. But some of my FB friends chat didn't have encrypted and it worked fine. It is the issue that FB is stupidly doing nothing.

My issue with end-to-end encrypted conversations in messenger is that I can't use search function in conversations for keywords. However, with conversations that don't have end to end encryption, I can still fully use this function. Do you know any workaround to be able to use search function? It is really frustrating to be not able to search something from past in conversations.
The search feature is still available even in end-to-end encrypted conversations. However, it seems like you might be experiencing some issues with it not working properly. Have you tried restarting the app or updating it to see if that resolves the problem? If the search feature is still not functioning for you, it might be worth reaching out to Facebook support for further assistance.
@@techunow @techunow in end to end conversations, it can find only very recent messages, probably after end to end started (and not even that, it doesnt even find many of those after end to end had started), not those from past. I've tried everything, cleaning the cache, reinstalling app.. does it also fail to load older messages to you, too?

@@korgan97 I did not. I can only think of downloading your Facebook data and messages and then manually searching in messages with something like Word.
EDIT: I just signed in using Mozilla Firefox browser and I was able to find messages even from end to end encrypted conversations.

I disabled the encrypted option, but still, some conversations are encrypted. I do not see some of the messages of my friends event yet after i disable this option central. :/

Thanks for reaching out. That's a good question. Unfortunately, as of January 2024, disabling end-to-end encryption for existing chats in Messenger is no longer an option. This applies even if you uninstall and reinstall the app.
You know I’m really getting tired of the stuff with Microsoft and some of these other programs. I just got notified today and it’s 2024. I don’t even like the messing in my stuff. It’s absolutely garbage and ridiculous. The last time I had to delete a number of Facebook pages had one of them stolen and then that was done because they wanted me to get one of two authentication things in the damn thing got a virus on my computer with Norton. Then a tech guru who teaches classes in cyber security come out and said yeah I don’t use that because it’s not any good. I can’t even trust Facebook or messenger. This is the only way I used to get a hold of my son.

i follow you up until the 3 dots at the top near the person's name. My iphone is a 12 pro max and there are no 3 dots 😕 Any other way I can go around this? Also, the only conversations that are being "withheld" or encrypted are mine to myself, as I send lots of recipes to myself on messenger to keep them handy. Chats from other people are still on there and able to be looked at. 🤦♀ Thanks

I don't understand how this is helpful at all. I can no longer send messages to many of my friends, because of the end to end encryption. If i want to write to them they are blocked due to end to end encryption it says. So how do i end the end to end encryption so i can write to them again. because right now if i write to them it says sending... and the messages never get sent.
I understand your frustration, but end-to-end encryption doesn't block you from sending messages to your friends. It actually protects your messages while they travel between your devices, so only you and the recipient can read them.
And remember that, since January 2024, you can't disable end-to-end encryption in Messenger, as it's a built-in security feature designed to protect your privacy and data.
I understand what you are saying and my friends can write to eachother in the encryted end to end chat, BUT I for some reason can't to SOME people, not all. sowhat is that about. it was never an issue before the latest update. So i don't know but maybee something went wrong during my update..but ive tried remove entire conversations, i've uninstalled the apps and reinsalled etc, nothing seem to work. Unfortunately, no, you cannot disable end-to-end encryption on Messenger for individual chats in 2024. Messenger rolled out default end-to-end encryption for all direct messages on the platform. This means your messages and calls are automatically encrypted and only accessible to you and the recipient(s), with Facebook and other third parties unable to read them.
But how about the old conversation if you delete?
Once the conversation is deleted, it's permanently removed from your Messenger app. Make sure to carefully consider before deleting any important conversations to avoid losing valuable information.

If you have two chat conversations with the same person in Messenger, one with end-to-end encryption and another without, then your friend may have enabled secure conversation with you.

It probably delete the whole conversation. And the E2EE is rolling them out as default.

If you've previously set up a PIN code on Messenger for accessing messages on other devices, you'll need to enter that PIN code on your computer to access the messages.

Hey there! you can currently delete individual messages or clear the chat history of end-to-end encryption. But you can't turn off end-to-end encrypted messages.
There's a dedicated section for End-to-End Encrypted (E2E) chats in Messenger. Messages you send in this section are encrypted, meaning only you and the recipient can see them. However, normal messages in other sections are not encrypted in all countries yet. Messenger is currently testing the option to enable E2E for all chats by default.
While you can delete E2E messages you've sent, if your friend sends you a message in E2E, you'll receive it in the dedicated section. Otherwise, your regular chats remain unencrypted.
To check if a conversation is E2E, look for the lock icon and "End-to-End Encrypted" label at the top of the chat window.

How to restore end to encrypted chat on messenger
Unfortunately, Messenger currently doesn't offer a way to directly restore end-to-end encrypted chats once you've removed the encryption. This is because the encryption keys are only stored on the devices involved in the conversation, not on Facebook's servers.
If you backed up your chats before removing the encryption, you might be able to restore them from your backup. Back up can be a screenshot or chat.

I understand you might not want encryption on Messenger, and I hope Facebook will offer a cancellation option in the future. For now, the only alternative is to delete the specific person's conversation you don't want encrypted.
