  • The search for life in the universe is undergoing a profound renewal. Thanks to the discovery of thousands of planets orbiting other stars, the introduction of new observing technologies, and increased support from both public and private sectors, a new science of searching for “techno-signatures” is emerging.
Dr. Adam Frank (University of Rochester, author of Light of the Stars: Alien Worlds and the Fate of Earth) will unpack this frontier area, discussing what counts as a techno-signature; how to be systematic in thinking about exo-civilizations and their evolution; what techno-signatures can tell us about our own future. He believes that within the next few decades we will likely have actual data relevant to the question life, perhaps even the intelligent kind, in the universe.
Dr. Adam Frank is a leading expert on the final stages in the evolution for stars like the Sun, but his current work also focuses on life in the universe. His research group at the University of Rochester has developed advanced supercomputer tools for studying how stars form and how planets evolve. His most recent book is Light of the Stars: Alien Worlds and the Fate of the Earth, which won the 2019 Phi Beta Kappa Award for Science.

He has written two other books, The Constant Fire: Beyond the Religion and Science Debate, and About Time: Cosmology and Culture at the Twilight of the Big Bang. He is the co-founder of the blog 13.8 on BigThink.com and an on-air commentator for NPR’s All Things Considered. He has contributed pieces to the New York Times, NBC, The Washington Post and elsewhere, and served as the science consultant for Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Frank’s work in public outreach was recently honored via the American Physical Society’s 2020 Joseph A. Burton Forum Award.

When I was a kid in rural Australia, I lived on a remote property with a river in the gully 2kms behind. I used to wander down at night, sometimes with friends, often alone, to kill time. Overlooking the river was an old house, with grounds designed by the 19th-century German botanist Baron Ferdinand von Muller. By then, sadly, it was derelict and forgotten, accessible only by a bullock track, the gardens overgrown by trees and ferns. The house itself had been ravaged by cattle, which used to shelter inside when the south-westerly rain-storms crashed through the farm on winter nights. One evening, at about 11:50pm, I was sitting on the veranda alone, watching the moon slip silently through the treetops, when a shadow unexpectedly obscured the view. As my eyes adjusted, I could clearly make out a dark, torpedo-shaped object in the sky, moving slowly in the direction of the house. I remember it clearly. It made no sound. As it loomed overhead, the object abruptly stopped. I couldn't know, but I felt in my gut that whoever, or whatever, was controlling it knew I was there, alone in the darkness. Imagine, then, my astonishment when a great rope ladder was slung down from the craft, and eight elephants came lumbering down, each wearing a bright pink party hat. On the back of each elephant were two furious corgis, yapping loudly in their ears, urging them onwards. As they galloped towards me, ears billowing and trunks whirling, I saw another, more horrifying form descending the ladder - a man-shaped extra-terrestrial, apparently their leader. He, or it, had donned a beanie, a trench coat and, bizarrely, a pair of purple tights, in a miserable attempt to disguise himself as human. Fortunately for me, in getting dressed, he had somehow managed to place both feet through the same trouser leg of his tights. As a result, the instant he set foot on the ground he toppled over and lay kicking and writhing in shame and anger. In the confusion that followed I sprang up from the veranda, fled into the night, and made my escape.

Thanks for the reminder that it’s easy to get caught up in a “first-hand” eye witness account because people drop their defenses of critical thinking when we are under the impression of what’s being read is a vulnerable person pouring their heart out. Remember lies come from people the have no reason to lie; with the sole purpose to entertain the person that’s lying.

@@DrBrianKeating I'm familiar with most of what was covered, but this was a concise presentation. The hot tub analogy was nice to give some perspective. I have been following this for decades. I think we should work on a moon base, but where? Perhaps the edge of what's visible to us, so we get good communication with earth and less disturbance from earth to look at the stars. Also at a point with the least wobble of the moon to stabilize connections. It would be a great benefit as a gas station as it does have some water to split and a research station to start our Von Neumann probes. Also, with mining potentials it's an all around decent mission to embark on.

I think advanced civilizations would be aiming for stable populations and sustainable use of energy and resources and would have no interest in colonization outside of a few local star systems.
They may well send out many probes to map out the galaxy in great detail but if one of these probes would come by our star system.
Its presence might be very subtle and largely go unnoticed.

Thank you! I've always felt the Kardashev scale seemed absurdly short sighted. A civilization that creates more efficient engines and can master fusion power or the creation of anti-matter would have all the energy they could ever want. I just can't imagine the use case for harnessing an entire star's worth of energy output. Let alone a galaxy.

The subject is great. Interviewing Frank however shows that we (SETI) have not really evolved our thinking since the late 70's: Let's start with the notion that our top-engineers are already thinking how to 'colonize' nearby terrestrial planets by sending out probes and using 3D printing /depositing our DNA which might be doable within 300 years. If theoretically possible, then obviously Drake's formula is no longer relevant. All it takes is 1 civilization able to colonize the rest of the universe with such methods and as a consequence we should rethink our own origins. As for 'Fermi's' paradox of why we see no aliens here; that's really a childish notion. It's possible we would have been visited many times in the past, if not know. But more over; why are we so sure we should see them if they are here? Religious books all talk about entities mingling with humans, not always in a positive manner. Moreover there would not need to materially travel over here. Since interstellar space is energy dominated (as our voyager craft are starting to find out), physically crossing spatial distances may not be relevant. Controlling our elite should suffice. While we are at it; since we know next to nothing if these government promoted UAP's are actually real (whilst crazy enough we do deny Oumuamua's anomalies), lets for arguments sake say there are currently alien influences and (for security reasons) lets say they have negative intentions. So what would you do as an alien? If destruction of mankind as a' failed experiment' was their intent, how to go about? Eliminating us all might be technically or logistically difficult even of them. If so the best way is by stealth, e.g. sterilizing us. Best way? have us self medicate or self inject in response to a a perceived medical threat? would be an option. Again, just a hypothetical scenario, but let's at least start to get some negative options on the table, if we are to believe these recent sightings are real.

I just thought of something. Maybe UAP arent here 2 b understood or somehow conquered or tamed? Look at our human history; endless examples of UAP and we humam beings a schmart and observant. In modern times we have corps and govts with lots of resources right? And it looks like they still dont know what is going on? And looking at how various natives have dealt with these things, they seem to know how to react and behave and modify their actions around these events, so not to conquer or tame but to learn how to exist with? So if so, then our modern world should really b teaching people how to exist with these phenomena? Just a riff :3
