Very nice film and transfer to digital. I had several adventure around these collieries about the same time photographing the steam locos. Thanks.
Same here mate; Brynlliw, Pontardullais and especially Mt Ash. Tape recording as well as photos 1974 - 78. At Maerdy the OQ was under repair on my one visit there.
Gandy Dancer You need to put your sound recording of Graig Merthyr and the clip on here together.
What a great film thanks😃
And a bit of music👍
Absolutely amazing footage thank you for sharing. Mardy Monster especially of interest to me also 👍
I'm glad that OQ made it to preservation. I took some measurements once. It appears to have the same Tractive Effort, but not speed, of a Black 5.
It’s a loco I’m hoping to return to Maerdy someday. Whether it be temporary or permanent.
Lovely! Never caught that one day of summer then? Loved the chain Shunting at 23minutes.
They might have been scruffy, dirty pit ponies, but they outlived their main-line brothers and carried on working through the 1970's. I think regular working steam ended at Graig Merthyr in 1978, Briniliw 1979 and Mountain Ash in 1980. The last Welsh NCB steam was a standby Peckett called 'MENELAUS' at Marine Colliery in 1983.
A pity that you didn't have the 'paddy train' at Talywain or the ex GWR 5700 class pannier tank. The pannier tank was sent to Mountain Ash, but it was simply too heavy for the generally awful track. That up at Penwriceiber was visible only as two grooves in the coal waste.
Remember being taken for a ride on the foot plate by Jim peacock at the big arch talywain I was eight wonderful memory ❤️
We have the Mardy Monster at Elsecar now and cant wait to get her back into steam again. With permission, could I please share this video on our railways facebook page so that people can see it running in its glory days?
By all means
Superb video, many thanks.
That’s the true Percy just with a 0-6-0 wheel arrangement 11:02
my home town, happy days
God Bless the Mardy Monster!
A lost world indeed!, to our great detriment
The forgotten Loco's
The archway from the Abersychan/Talywaun footage still exists; what was the "top line" from Pontypool to Blaenafon is now a cycle track.
Part of the pontypool and blaenavon railway now exists for tourism
