Well the difference is that one leaves a husk of a human that does only it’s most basic instincts with no other cognitive thinking and is probably worse than death, while on the other hand killing would be just your corps on the floor decaying and this would be merciful.
Almost a year ago in D&D I made a female "monster" (long story as to why she's a monster) as a companion for my character. I have always had trouble describing her. And this... is PRACTICALLY HER!

If I found a monster I'd try to befriend it and help it get back into whatever lifestyle it had before it wound up in my closet. I think it would make for a goofy show of some random guy with his own mental demons being flung into a world of real monsters and bizzare occurrences.
Those howls... they were good. Something about them reminds me of a story I heard as a kid. About the wind wispering your name, and the man running, running into the wilderness until his feet wilted away to bony numbs bleeding as he ran. It wasn't a good windigo story, but that's what those windy howls reminded me of. And childhood stories that scared you are good things to invoke in horror. Something about what scares you as a kid can creep you out even as an adult, even if you know it wasn't really scary now.

Not gonna lie, that part where we needed to be extra quiet as the "thing" moved about outside and I could hear its wailing....genuinely unsettling and put me on edge as, for a moment, I genuinely didn't know what was going to happen next. Well done.
