Pompeii was bombed in WW2 by the Allies, British and US. About 140 bombs fell on the ruins.

@@DaCostaRica48 There was and still is a railroad next to Pompeii, and that was their target. Because of stupidity and poor aim 140 bombs fell on Pompeii.
Caligula's 2000 year old pleasure boat was recovered from a lake at great expense. The Americans shelled the boat's museum with cannons and destroyed everything. The boat was about 300 feet long.
