Song is nice but there’s a line that is seems contrary to Catholic doctrine - “took my place on the cross”. Penal substitution is a Protestant doctrine.
Hello, wow it's been 9 months since. To clarify, Our Catholic Doctrine teaches Sacrificial Atonement, not penal substitutionary. Sacrifical Atonement means Jesus Himself chose to die on our behalf to save the world from sin. He was not forced to do it, He actually have a choice. The Protestant doctrine says otherwise, that He has no choice but to die in order for the scripture be fulfilled. Which in our Catholic Teaching it's "unbiblical" because God the Father is a God of Justice, meaning He won't allow such injustice like the innocent(Jesus) to die for the guilty(humanity). So it's a matter of premise, of doctrine, not of the terms used on this song. From a Catholic Stand point He did take our place on the cross metaphorically, figuratively, and literally. Out of His love for us, not of because He had no choice. Hope this helps. :) You can message me for further discussions btw. God bless you.
Wow. Thank you guys for the enlightenment.
I dont like it we divide those who are in faith because of those people on top.
Whoever is not against us, is for us. -Jesus
The lyric "He took our place on the cross" in the song Incredible by Liveloud is consistent with Catholic teaching, as it refers to the substitutionary nature of Christ's sacrifice. This phrase is a poetic way of expressing a central truth of the Catholic faith: Jesus bore the punishment due to our sins out of His infinite love and mercy.
Catholic Understanding of "Taking Our Place on the Cross"
1. Substitutionary Atonement
Jesus, as the Lamb of God, offered Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of humanity (John 1:29). By dying on the cross, He reconciled humanity with God, a debt we could not repay ourselves.
Isaiah 53:5: "He was pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities."
2. Unique Role of Christ
As the God-man, Jesus alone could take upon Himself the full weight of sin and redeem humanity (2 Corinthians 5:21). His death was not just an act of substitution but also an act of solidarity and love.
3. Expressing the Depth of Redemption
The phrase "He took our place" emphasizes that Jesus suffered what we deserved because of sin, fulfilling God's justice while extending His mercy. This is not meant to suggest that Jesus replaces our personal response to God's grace but highlights the foundational role of His sacrifice.
In songs like this, poetic language simplifies profound theological truths. The lyric reflects a deep gratitude for the redemption Jesus achieved through His sacrifice, which Catholics celebrate in the Eucharist and other liturgies. Therefore, the song's message aligns with Catholic teaching when understood within this context.
