  • The actor who plays the defence barrister in this episode of "Crown Court" is BEAUTIFUL! It's a shame that he had to portray the losing side of the case, haha! If YOU are wondering why a case of theft was tried at the Crown Court (rather than at the Magistrates Court or even by police caution), so is just about everyone else! It's a great drama, though, so get watching, especially if you want an indication of the ugly racial tensions that were prevalent in the UK in the 70s. Things were much worse then than now, "thanks" in particular to a particular Conservative MP who liked a good metaphor...
My dad and I used to watch Crown Court together in the months before I started school in either 1981 or 1982. When did YOU used to watch it and what was going on in YOUR life at the time?

I was an extra in crown court in one of the early 80s episodes.
My mum and nanna also went on the jury. They did about 4 episodes, after each they swapped seats and put a new jumper on lol

Absolutely fascinating. The jury in 1978 couldn't believe that people of the class of the Cunninghams could possibly behave as the defence alleged. Much easier to blame the obvious villain.
Would probably be 12-0 the other way now.

Exactly - and the judge would never have neen allowed to lead the jury as he did. A bit thought provoking how much that happened in real life.

@@LawandcrimewithGina TBH, that was how it worked then, the "old boy" net. Amazing just how much this brings it home. FWIW I was an Army officer at that time and regularly appeared in court for my soldiers for one reason or another, and in hindsight I suppose I just took the sort of absurd deference shown to the son who was a Lt in the Engineers for granted.

Well here i am with an hour to kill & quite a story although was Television truly like this in 1978 or is it the extremely dated Britishness of it all.... I imagine presenting such a subject on Public TV back then risked so many rules especially those of being able to even transmit such subjects not too be talked of! Quite incredible....

This must have been towards the end of its run. I remember it early mid seventies when nickin… I mean really ill and off school.
I used to think this was realistic, then I was stupid enough to do a law degree.

@@LawandcrimewithGina Law degrees per se aren’t stupid, I just wish I’d done something different for myself. The only reason I did law was because when I was interviewed for going to UCLAN (my uni) they said it would be impossible for someone who left school at 16, with average exam results, to do a law degree starting at 36. I wish I’d done something to do with wildlife or social sciences, something I have true passion for.

In response to the description, a defendant can request the crown court if it goes to trial and magistrates want to hear it themselves. I presume this was still true in 1978?
