Penderecki is highly underrated. Another piece, similar to the Threnody, that I played was Music for Prague: 1968 by Karel Hüsa. One part of it sound literally like people screaming as they are being run over by tanks. Chilling stuff.
I really love toccata and fuege in d minor especially if its being blayed by a symphony. The devils staircase is like a slightly scarier version of the endless staircase from mario 64
One I don't see mentioned often is The Field Marshall (Mussorgsky, Songs and Dances of Death) with Shosty's orchestration. Has to be sung by a baritone or bass for the full effect, though.
