    Would be so interesting to get inside the headspaces of these composers and what drove them to made these pieces. Traumas, mental health issues like depression, schizophrenia etc. maybe? Some of them might've also wanted to just simply fuck around and create something different and "taboo."

      Penderecki is highly underrated.
      Another piece, similar to the Threnody, that I played was Music for Prague: 1968 by Karel Hüsa. One part of it sound literally like people screaming as they are being run over by tanks. Chilling stuff.

    One I don't see mentioned often is The Field Marshall (Mussorgsky, Songs and Dances of Death) with Shosty's orchestration. Has to be sung by a baritone or bass for the full effect, though.

      I've long adored Ligeti. Was introduced to him in music history class at conservatory. His Requiem is truly spine tingling.
      I once tried listening to it after dropping acid alone in the dark.

    Do any of your scary music anthologies include Corigliano? You could probably do one with just his symphonies and operas lol.
    If I may humbly make one more suggestion, you should include Bartok's Divertimento for string orchestra. I literally got the shivers and started sweating during a live performance of that piece by the Detroit Symphony once many years ago.
