    YourInverted Paradiddle is known as Gadds Flutter Lick on UA-cam a great drummer Jeff WALD Demonstrates this in detail. But Young Man I am very impressed with your talent I 68 years old playing since I was 4 years old. But Professionally over 53 years the only reason I'm saying this is at your age I only wish I had your talent Your amazing. I wish for you all the blessings in the world I would love to hear you in a Smokin Jazz Funk band You are killer.

    I love that triplet lick starting with the bass drum. And I like how you added the clip from Clapton where he was shaking Gadd off because he was playing the outro fill of the solo too soon. Awesome.

    Nice work. Most of these licks I had to learn by painstakingly slowing the recording down and figuring them out, so you did a great service for drummers. I also like the sound of your kit and cymbals. I had no idea it was possible to get such a great sound using CS Black Dots on the toms, but it's working for you. Thanks.

    I watched the Steve Gadd VCR tape release when it came out 40 years ago where he showed how to play a samba, 50 ways, etc...Your video breaks his style down very well. And that is one nice kit from top to bottom!

    Excellent lesson! Just an observation, as the 2 are my favorite pcet style, creative drummers. Although they sound very different, Gadd, and Bonham has somewhat similar styles, especially with that L hand lead, and dexterity.

    The thing I love about Gadd is he really only has a handful of licks and he gets a TON of mileage out of them. The ones you’ve included here along with his Mozambique groove and the KLR (phrased as 16ths or 32nd instead of triplets) is basically what he uses exclusively. Of course he has all that rudimental vocabulary too, but he uses that differently than his licks. If you listen to the solos in Aja or pretty much any other solo he does, the inverted doubles, the ratamcue, the Mozambique, the hand foot triplets and the KLR as 16ths show every up time. But it always sounds fresh and interesting. And Gadd is basically the ONLY drummer I want to hear solo in a pop/groove setting. His solos are like songs: they have form, pocket and a climax. Not just a blur of licks that goes on for too long like many drummers with Uber chops (I’m looking at you Eric Moore 😂).

    • @backbaydrummingcom
      @backbaydrummingcom  Рік тому

      Yea I have similiar feelings about Gadd and Elvin Jones. They have great solos but It's the groove, phrasing and comping in ensembles that I keep listening for. They're drummers that I wanna listen to for an hour, not brief clips of chops.

    Lesson 1 use remo drum heads.

    • @backbaydrummingcom
      @backbaydrummingcom  2 роки тому

      I actually use all three of the major brands in most of my stuff because I’m super indecisive and have no real reason to be brand loyal at this point. I used Evans on the snare remo on the toms batters and resos and kick batter. And then Evan’s again on the kick reso. But I’ve frequently used Aquarian heads as well many times.

    • @backbaydrummingcom
      @backbaydrummingcom  Рік тому +1

      Gadd’s not really a chops guy but the cat can play. His Chick Corea playing is probably his most cutting edge stuff, listen to “Humpty Dumpty” or “Lenore”.
      I can somewhat see where you’re coming from because his drum solos do tend to be very repetitive. So many of them start with that Mozambique groove he does or his version of Crazy Army. But Gadd himself would tell you that being the best soloist isn’t his biggest priority. He really focuses on being the best ensemble player possible with an infectious groove.
      To me it’s like saying that Elvin wasn’t great because he didn’t play a lot of super fast tunes like “Cherokee” or “Lover”.

    • @jessebillson
      @jessebillson Рік тому

      @backbaydrummingcom thanks. I'll take a listen to those tracks. I've probably heard them before, but I always feel like everyone oversells gadd, which makes me take the contrary position.
