This is the one with Debra's rebellion. I like how in the end Marie apologizes then her and Amy hug. After that she gives Debra a look like "nice try."
Debra in the following scene about Marie Hey, listen, that is exactly what she is waiting for. For you to go over there and say you'll write those thank-you notes. You have got to be strong. She is testing you. Trust me, what she just pulled here, that's her big weapon - the guilt bomb. And it doesn't help that all the men in her family are scared to death of her. Whenever she comes up against somebody with a backbone who might actually confront her, she's completely threatened and she gets her claws out. And so she has been allowed to rule this way, unopposed, for decades. Listen Amy, I have been waiting for you. This is a critical time. Even though this is a tough regime to topple, with you in the family, now we have a shot. You and me together, to end all the suffering. Do you hear me? We can do it!
They literally moved across the street for her help and when she wasn’t of use anymore they wanted her to stop coming over as much bit it was an established norm at that point. Overbearing and invasive yes but she was also used
Ray and Robert are so frightened of Marie it’s sad and somewhat hilarious. And I admire Amy for taking a stand against Marie, it sucks that she gave in afterwards.
@@wesker100000000 I would not called that scared. I would say it is more like enabling bad behavior. That she has gotten away with it for so long, nobody is willing to deal with the bullshit that would come by standing up to her.
The 'thank you note' thing. It never ends. And then you have kids and you're expected to write thank you notes every time someone gives them a gift, even though you have profusely thanked them in person, from birth, christening, birthdays ...for the rest of your child's life.
I did my thank you notes the day after the wedding. We married on a Sunday and left Wednesday for our honeymoon. I had my side of the family's thank you notes done by Tuesday night. But my husband kept delaying his for weeks.....and then months..... Finally, I wrote the ones for his side out of fear that someone from his side would run into someone from my side and realize that only half the guests got the notes (which were personalized and handwritten.)
@@leahartlee29 Yes, we should have. But he wasn't going to cooperate. If I'd waited for him to write them, they never would have gotten done at all. I had the same problem when my Mom died. Her husband (who was the executor of her estate) had no interest in writing the notes. So I had formal thank you cards printed out from my computer and then added some personal comments.
It’s amazing how nice Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle were in real life. They were both such great actors . I’m sure the other players in the show learned a lot
If everyone thinks this is bad wait until the end of the episode. Spoiler - Marie only wanted Amy to send a thank you note to Lee & Stan because she recommended the gift to them. So she just wanted to prove to her friends she was right.
This scene is another example of how narcissistic Marie is. She kept forcing Amy to write thank you notes, and Amy kept telling her that she just got back from her honeymoon with Robert, and she'll get to it later. It's so obvious that that was all Marie cared about: thank you notes. I liked how Amy handled Marie in this scene; Amy stood up for herself against Marie's narcissism
I don't think it was about the thank you notes, it was a clear aplha animal power play. And she won in the end of the episode and both Debra and Amy went back to their place.
To add on to Zodroo's point - Marie made such a big deal about the thank you notes, because she only really wanted Amy to send the one to Lee. And that was because Marie actually picked out the gift for Lee to give Amy and Robert. Marie wielded power that went beyond just Amy and Debra. Personally, I find it funny, but that's just because it's a TV show. In real life, that'd be terrible.
when i was a teen watching this i always thought stuff like this was hilarious as an adult, i still find it hilarious, but damn have i met so many people like Marie but on a worse scale lol
I had a mother in law like marie. She hated me because i didn't tolerate her behavior and did things in my own time. It led to many hilarious situations. Mostly i found them funny.
Odd. Those curtains like someone at Tulane Rd Hummelstown Pa. Also, I received wedding gifts from a few people I didn't even know. Go. Ask Alice, right?
This video didn't show the entire episode. I remember Marie taking off the pin Amy gave her and giving it back to her just because Amy wasn't going to send thank you notes that very second for her wedding gifts. At times Marie acts way too immature!!
it looks like they just woke up and 4 people are in their kitchen making noise, and when Ray says hi twice his mom tells him how rude he is. thats whats wrong
It's from a bit at the opening of the episode. Robert and Amy come back from their honeymoon all happy and fresh faced so they made Ray and Debra extra rough to juxtapose lol.
"Marie.... Let's get this out of the way quickly. I am going to be perpetually and hugely disappointing to you, and subsequently your friends. Get used to it. Unlike Debra, I don't care what you think, and I will never make even the smallest effort to change for your satisfaction."
I don't think Debra particularly cared, she just was bombarded with Marie nearly everyday. Ray was the one who cared and aided Marie every time there was a conflict
@@dannytallmage2971 The concept of a boundary didn't exist to Marie. So, whether Debra had a job (fairly certain she did before she and Ray got together) or not, Marie would act the same way. Marie was clearly the better homemaker, and she did care about others, but her intrusiveness was about more than 'keeping Debra in line'.
It was stupid but the real reason why it was such a big deal was Marie picked it out and had convinced her friend Lee to give it has a wedding gift to Robert and Amy; Lee questioned Marie’s taste so Marie wanted Amy to write an elaborate thank you asap which she did btw proving she was right and had good taste

I loved how Ray and Debra just stood there waiting in horror, disbelief, amusement...to see where it'd end😁😁😁
And Robert doing the same…only without the amusement
I think they were happy to have the heat taken off them for once
