"Technically, I'm an artist" The best sentence of the entire video! Yes you are! I'd give anything to learn from someone like you, and to work together!
The thing about Porsches (of all ages) is that they they are monuments to the finest engineering and great quality materials packaged into a car that can usually be driven on the road daily, cherished for its road manners, and loved for its aesthetics, both in the metal, and the purist way that they drive.
How anyone can question what Rod does to these early Porsche's is beyond me. He gives them not only a new life but a better life. He hot Rod's them pun intended
These cars are just magnificent. They capture the drivers attention unlike others in my opinion. I wish I could afford one, because it would put a smile on my face every time I would get behind the wheel. I will happily drive my old bug for now.
Wow!!!, one of my fav cars. My fav Porsche, a 356 356b coupe(bathtub) love what owners do to them. Yes I agree you are an artist. only a true artist could build on greatness and make perfection, cheers well done ,amazing!!!
I honestly would have rather just had the yellow Porsche as it was, paint chips and all. Clean it up, get it running well and drive it as is. It has character and history.
His creations are all bespoken builds, paid in full prior to actual donor car de-assembly/reassembly... the cost of approximately $500,000 is in addition to the cost of the donor vehicle and the time required can be a year to transform and deliver the final product, with a year of waiting in production queue prior to that
Awesome garage! A dream to work on that old Porsches! I like the fact you customize the cars as the new owner likes it to give them their perfect car :)
Personally, I like to keep them as original as possible, even though they are not perfect compared to todays standards. It's part of the fun to have an imperfect car. If I want a perfect one, I can buy a new one. You can restore them, but please don't change them. And I know what I'm talking about, cos i have two of them(imperfect ones).
Trillions like and best comment for you because you are best on Earth and follower respect you,we need videos in Real 120fps FullHD ,4K,8K and Sound in FullHD 3D
I’m planning on hitting the lottery very soon Rod. I’ll be in touch with you shortly after to build me one special Porsche. Nice covering the cars driving Mulholland. … I’m very familiar.
"I'm an artist". No! Artists create their own art in small series. Horacio Pagani's an artist - and probably the only one in today's auto industry. This guy's a restorer doing expensive "restomods", nothing out of the ordinary in California.
Yes he is an artist! He put his art on top of something that already exist. Like a painter on his paper or Canvas a statue on its pedestal!! ;) he really is an artist!
"Art" can only exist for its own sake, and can serve no other purpose. This is a car, therefore it cannot be art. So it follows that he cannot be an artist. He's not even the original designer, he's just fiddling with someone else's creation.
It will be interesting to see when the first Tesla gets customized! Personally I must confess that I believe the Honda E is a more customizable car than Tesla’s but the core of the matter is who and when will we se the first customized electric vehicle? Time will tell.
That's what life is all about, knowing what you like and turning it into to the love of your life.I'm gonna start doing the same at age 50,a little late but better late than ever.
I get why these are probably expensive, but I didn't hear in the video say was 400 Grand and I wouldn't understand why it would be four hundred grand when you can get beautiful examples of a 356 for about half of that.
A rich man's game.....I bought my first 356 (1962 B Super) in 1972 for $1800...it was in perfect condition...those days are gone, now only the elite are allowed.
The 356 looks really small when comparing the man's hand to the boot lid and they are beautifully simple cars. Might be a bit chilly in the cabin and smell a little of petrol there as well. Not to mention leaving a puddle of oil on the driveway occasionally.
This should be done to all of the non-matching #'s or already tainted 356's out there.. I want one badly!! And would take it over any newer 400k car any day!
Wow, That vintage cars are much more expensive. It'd be very easy if I would get my own vintage lost car and restore it and sell it for 400 thousands of dollars. 😀
Yes this is art and possible the best way to look at it I think. Not to justify the changes just enjoy them and marvel at the beauty and workmanship these guys produce. Quite incredible and well worth 400k to the right person, look at artwork that goes for much more ? I know what I would rather have :-).
Of course it does, the Beetle was built by the great Ferdinand Porsche, and the first Porsche 356 was built by his son, Ferry Porsche, based on what Ferdinand would want. It's like a luxury Beetle.
There is something depressing about these cars being associated with these prices. I was sad when they went from $25,000-$35,000 to $1000,000 almost overnight. Pretty much assuring that i will never be able to own one. Oh well, if i were younger maybe i could wait and like the custom cars his grandfather did i could find a few of these in 15 years or so when they have become chipped up, or worse because it was a "usable" classic that therefore got used a lot. Things happen. A car gets neglected. Rich guy goes to prison or goes broke. I know the fate that befell some of the great old customs. Finding the Golden Sahara or Ala Kart faded and in disrepair. Nope. The only Porsche a regular guy can aspire to is one 10 to 15 years old. At the depths of it's depreciation before it starts it's long vaunted rise to sainthood.
Du kannst Porsche restaurieren oder auch in einen besseren zustand wie werkzustand versetzen... aber im grunde genommen hast du den sinn eines porsche nie verstanden...
Most of costs are for labors in body work ($100~120/h?) I wonder if they can ship just bodies to china and get it back to save a lot of labor costs. (yeah I think Chinese can do body work. they shouldn't touch mechanical work though)
Agree...while he's a craftsman and a mastermechanic I still find it a shame what he's doing to those old cars. Sandblast, weld, paint it. Period correct rims and tyres, shocks, brackets, hoses, knobs, interior etc.etc. Old engine (if present) restored. No LS swap, lowering, big rim kinda jobs.
The Germans should thank their lucky stars that the British are so incompetent as a nation because their car industry would be the best in the world considering the concepts and design ability , but it all falls down getting it into production with their inherent laziness and inability to finish their products with the details it requires for reliability , you only have to look at the British aircraft industry in the 1950's to see their capability but it all collapsed into nothing just like their car industry .
So Rolls Royce,Bentley and Morgan are all junk? What about the Avro Vulcan,Tornado and Typhoon,English Electric Lightning What about Rolls Royce aircraft engines.Add the B-57, manufactured under license from English Electric. Still in use in the US after 59 years! Junk my ass !
Rolls Royce are German so are Bentley , before the Germans took it over they was a saying if you like Rolls Royces get two as one will always be in the dealers getting repaired , manufacturing does succeed in Britain as long as British management do not have a leg in , the British are not a capable people any more , they have the lowest productivity in Europe the reason Ford moved car manufacturing out , on all the car sites it is always brought up about questionable British quality even now , the past Socialist Union controlled country still has a long way to recover from the Fabian influence just like Russia with its experiment with Communism and east Germany is still working on ridding itself from the free lunch society from the past Communist era .
Ever hear of The Marshall Plan? I didn't think so. At the end of WW2, Europe had been bombed flat. No factories. No housing. No food. Who steps in? THe Victors. The USA with tons of money, etc. Let's get Europe back on it's feet as quick as we can, to stop the incursions of the USSR. Now, England got blasted pretty hard, too. And from 1939 through 1945, there was no new technology that wasn't directly related to the war effort. Everything else was belt driven late 19th century stuff. Pretty hard to compete when the competition is being blostered and you aren't. Know why the Land Rover is aluminum? ASll that was available was aircraft aluminum. No steel to be found. England did not end war time rationing until the mid-fifties. Why? They couldn't afford to buy food, because they were paying off debt to the USA, who was sending it all over Europe. And they have to compete with these restrictions in place. They did well. Most of the electronic innovation in WW2 came from Great Britain. Their code breakingt was the best. Their Lancaster Bomber could easily carry twice the bombload of any US built plane, until the introduction of the B-29. Nothing out of place with Brits. The problem is with your history.
So Bruce; What about those RR aircraft engines? One of the best fighters of WWII,the P-51 Mustang was powered by,wait for it, a RR merlin engine. Today there are thousands of aircraft powered by RR made in England engines! German car engineering? Ask anyone who owns a BMW or Mercedes made in the last 20 years how reliable they are. There are 2 BMW's in my family both cars are repair shop queens. As a matter of fact one of the cars needed to have its entire braking system replaced 3 weeks from new. I might mention VW with it's dieselgate scandal. Oh and the Mini which is made by BMW is a POS as well . Please don't tell me the Brits aren't capable anymore.
The Brits have got to stop looking back for greatness , I suppose its why the Germans looked to the future after ww2 as their past was so horrific they could not bare to look back , Britain's past since ww2 is a tragedy not worth looking at and they certainly have had the smile wiped off their face and have nothing to gloat about so it's about time they got off the arses and do what the Germans are doing now simply excelling at everything that they put their minds too , I cannot believe that a nation that is so close to a increible economic and industrial success story and hasn't got the nouse to simply implement the same programs and systems , the Chinese are smart enough , how do you think they have been so successful do you think that is their own ability , no way , so the day Britain has the intelligence to just take from the best of the world until they are capable of being the best as they once were , they are going to continue with the huge trade deficits of imported goods that the Brits love so much because they haven't got something local that is comparable .

"Live the dream" as they say and it is art, definitely.
You have the magic touch.
356th body, these lines, curves - it's alive!
Wow!!!, one of my fav cars. My fav Porsche, a 356 356b coupe(bathtub) love what owners do to them. Yes I agree you are an artist. only a true artist could build on greatness and make perfection, cheers well done ,amazing!!!
This is the golden era of cars. They will never build cars like this again.
Totally agree. Cars nowadays are computers with wheels 😪
Rod is building them like this every day and prolly for a long time to come .
yes, you are an artist! I love it!
I honestly would have rather just had the yellow Porsche as it was, paint chips and all. Clean it up, get it running well and drive it as is. It has character and history.
Yes like restore it under the skin but interior and body like it is! Well then i would need both, because i like em in al kinda ways!!
rust never sleeps. fix it right so it will last longer

Disagree. Modify them to your tastes and drive the hell out of it
Agreed. By all means tweek a few things but leave them mostly alone, especially the bodys!
Couldn't agree more, there's already so few of these surviving its rare to see a stock 356 these days.
Cayeen Porsche owner here, next one will be 356, dam there art deco at its best! great vid
great feature on an amazing artist.
Cool video and great work. Standing on the shoulders of giants helps too.

Would love to have done an apprenticeship with someone of this caliber!
What's that code off colour off the coupe? It's very nice green. Very tastefully done. Both are nice.
Great video

Aavi Co2 Guys who buy cars like this already have a GT3RS and a garage full of other cars.

@ray h. same thing with the 23 window bus. Other drivers hated us being on the road. The only ones who like them were the hippies
A rich man's game.....I bought my first 356 (1962 B Super) in 1972 for $1800...it was in perfect condition...those days are gone, now only the elite are allowed.
you can be "elite" too if you'd be so inclined to search for ways to generate wealth. they're out there. don't work hard, work smart.
The 356 looks really small when comparing the man's hand to the boot lid and they are beautifully simple cars. Might be a bit chilly in the cabin and smell a little of petrol there as well. Not to mention leaving a puddle of oil on the driveway occasionally.
I would love to make an order with all original vintage porche specifications... Nothing unless a wish to come true, beautiful isn't...
four - hundred - thousand :O ouch!
Yes ; Ouch ! You could have bought that car for less than 40k about 10 years ago.
@@racer67 I'd love to see a restored 356 for less than 100k.

The green Porsche is a great color, what's the name and paint code of that color?
Stone grey
Those wheels don’t appear to be what originally came on a 356B. But I like ‘em. Aluminum?
Philthy mullet @ 0:55
Are there union benefits and medical benefit and TDA if so , I'll start work there first thing Monday morning. Thanks
How muchee for a stocker?
Early postwar German cars, yep I got 2 of them BMW's E9, E10, no Porsche's though, at least not yet...
Overspent by about 300,000!
Scary thing is I'll prob have to buy a bunch of that hand equipment just to work on two 914 project cars I have.

I'd do those tail lights up and down instead of side ways
I have the poor mans Porsche, a VW Ghia. Not as expensive but just as much fun to drive.
That’s a GREAT car and will be my next project.
art is created from nothing, you sir are a restoration and modification expert.
I'd prefer an old original daily driver with reliable mechanics.
i still think it looks like a beetle
Of course it does, the Beetle was built by the great Ferdinand Porsche, and the first Porsche 356 was built by his son, Ferry Porsche, based on what Ferdinand would want. It's like a luxury Beetle.
i wish more people knew that
in germany we have onky afew of these...
+marcel Bee - Really?
@@realmaindrianpace rusted away. i believe they salt the roads there
7:50 well technically you aren’t an artist (art is the creation of non-functional objects) but it certainly is artistic what you do.

its a nice job , but is the price tag a typo or just a joke.
Gee...that's a lot...
