  • Tips on how to AVOID playing tension in the bow hand by tapping into gravity + our body's natural weight! So much tension is caused by forcing power into our bow rather than flopping on down and sinking into our strings! In this video I talk about my own struggles as a young cellist, and exercises to help you discover your own, natural powerhouse. Learning how to improve the bow arm is a HUGE topic, so this will be a multi-part video series with more tips to come! Be patient, and understand that this is a long-term goal that will take a lot of dedicated time and focus, but Celli and I have complete confidence in you!

      You're welcome and yes you're absolutely right! One of the biggest things I focus on in practicing lately has been self-awareness. It is difficult but once you get into that mindset, you can fix or prevent many issues that involve tension. Hope you enjoy the rest of the videos you find! 🎻

    Thank you for this tips, sometimes I suffer a lot because I carry the bow and my right shoulder is going up, it so painful, but I'm getting better and this helps me a lot :)

      I'm glad you're noticing it improving, but just be very careful and aware of your body. If you feel the pain returning be sure to take frequent breaks and spread out your practicing!

    Thank you for this video. I haven’t been able to play for the last 6 months because of tendinitis from too much tension in my bowing arm and shoulder. Looks like open string practice is a good place to start back.

    I've been suffering from pain in my right arm for about 14 years - every time I play there is so much pain. It's upsetting and this video is so helpful but I was wondering if you had any additional advice for my particular situation? I can't make it through a piece like Kol Nidrei without extreme fatigue and pain. It feels wrong to not press on the strings with the bow the way I normally do - the resonation is completely different.. the sound is lacking. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Great video! It seems like there is a sweet spot that I struggle to find when it comes to right elbow raising vs right wrist pronation. Any tips for finding that? I can get the bow on the a string with my elbow all the way at my hip, but to maintain a fluid wrist I have to raise my elbow some degree

  • @hevvyrayne178

    What's the posture you use to play open A? I've looked everywhere but I can't find anything. My shoulder raises when I play it and, though I am indeed relaxed and my tone is good and bow is straight, my shoulder starts cracking and I don't want it to turn into an issue. Please help

    • @CelloDoll
      @CelloDoll  5 місяців тому

      If you're concerned with the A-string posture I'd start with having your bow on the lowest C-string. Then use primarily your life wrist and a little bit of your forearm & elbow to raise the bow onto the A-string. If we approach the A-string from below as an exercise, you may realize how little raising is needed to get there. I'd also watch yourself in a mirror / record yourself on your phone to see if your shoulder raises as you draw the bow or play loudly. Hope this helps!
