Ngl I'ma Roomba fan because i own a Roomba but Roborock has a strong product and it's good to see both companies trying to best each other. It's good for us, the consumer.

I bought a j7 a month ago and I have to say, I’m disappointed. I really want to give others a heads up.
If you have a lot of black items or rugs with black sections in your house, the j7 is horrible. It registers black as a cliff or the edge of stairs so it won’t vacuum over rugs with black accents. I have a home with a black and white color scheme for reference.
We have black doors and doorframes and the robot just stares at them for a long time thinking before banging into the frame or the open door itself. Half of one room never gets mapped or cleaned because the carpet runner with a black center strip makes the robot turn away. It also requires a large amount of light otherwise it cancels cleaning early. My home is not pitch dark, there’s ambient light from the windows, and the robot has its own led light but it’s still not bright enough. I have to make sure all the lights are on for it not to cancel.
I’ve had it running for a month in my home everyday and it still gets lost and spends about 6 hours a day vacuuming the only a couple rooms and leaving several rooms untouched. The map is about 80% correct. The last 20% is consistently messed up and every “edit” the robot makes somehow still messes up the map. On the portions that are mapped correctly, j7 still gets lost, misses areas when vacuuming, and slams into walls.
The worst part is that it vacuums “better” -if you can call it better- if you turn off the ai detection. Reason being is that on carpets, it’s wheels leave tracks in the rug. So after it makes a pass on the rug, it sees it’s own tire track, thinks that it’s a wire, and now it has effectively cut off more than half of the room from being vacuumed.
My home is clean and picked up. There’s no obstacles that should really pose it any issue other than shoes in the mud room and it actually does well avoiding those.
I’ve tried cleaning the sensor, do multiple mapping runs, delete the map to have it remap, have it “clean everywhere” every day, even spent days with ALL MY LIGHTS ON in the house and it still…ugh. I regret my purchase.

thanks for the comment I was debating getting the j7+ but I have a lot of black gym mats next to white tiles so it might do the cliff avoidance as well

I think Roborock really compromised the performance via the half-assed engineering they've done. Large things that aren't well compressed like the cotton balls don't fit out between the brush, large hard debris if it makes it out of the bin and brush is caught by the air duct that's narrow for the bend they have set up for the bagless bin and it's cyclone set up that we don't even get in the US. I stay away from Roborock due to the brush issues on carpet, but I had high hopes that this would be better than it is.

I think that if you actually have the robots aspirate these debris through their rolling brushes, the debris will crack, shatter and become in a shape and size that would probably be sucked out much easier than putting these debris in their original shape without passing through the rolling brushes.
Would be interesting to see the difference in a "real live experience" with debris ont the floor first then aspirated and finally sucked by the emptying dock system.

I like the extreme tests. Makes us see where the design fails on the robots. This test was informative as wll as the Shark with its problem with jellybeans and so on. For most normal use cases I assume there will be no issues at all since we never manage to fill a dirtbin so much or pickup so much between each run. As an example: We have 2 cats and run our robots daily and the bin might get full after 1 full week and with auto empty each run the amount of debris will be much less. I have ordered the S7 empty bin for our S7.

I am a roomba fan cus I owned a 800 series roomba from 2013 for such a long time and yet it is working pretty good today! I did recently get the j7+ and I am also impressed with it. They both are doing a good job today!😄 I enjoyed watching the video as it was quite entertaining. I didn’t expect the roomba j7+ to win! Tbh I wonder how the roomba j7+ will do against the i7+. Who would you think would win? On the overall vacuuming and stuff. My friend owns a i7+

Just a thought not picking on one or the other has the j7 been used as much as the roborock ? Just was just wondering if the seals or other components on roborock are alittle more worn out causing a little worse result. Maybe use the j7 for a bit and retest?

Hey Adam, have you by any chance removed the brush roll recently in the Roborock S7? I recently bought one and after removing the brush roll for cleaning, I did not reinstall it properly and it would not empty the dustbin hardly at all. I realize you know what you are doing so doubt that is it, but it was in my case. BTW, I purchased the S7 partially based on some responses you gave me concerning my needs. Thanks for that and all of your videos!

  • @DJaquithFL

Pfft .. I don't know. I would think if I dump that much cereal on the floor I would use a broom and maybe vacuum up the dust. Personally I have a 80# Australian Shepherd who sheds so much hair you wouldn't believe me if I told you; you could quilt a rug. The only reason we're considering one of these is we need something to vacuum literally everyday in the kitchen / great room area and everyone seems to be tired of doing that...
I live in Florida next to a beach .. people don't get much sand in their house; maybe tourists that don't use outdoor showers and properly stow away and clean their towels.

Using another vacuum to get things out of bins vertically are inefficient given the parameters at this current age.
I would like to see a design where these vacuums could drop the contents thru an opening on the bottom of the devices such as a trap door. Using gravity and maybe a blower of some kind to better empty these contents.
I think we’re still early on these so-called self-emptying bins.
    Any better alternatives?

@@leighbarrett6797 I think roombas are the best for carpet due to their dual brushes. Tested the u8+ and it did decent, but will still need to use a regular vaccume as well. Took the i8+ back and decided to get the J7+, it seems to bump into stuff much more carefully, carpet cleaning ability is probably about the same as the i7+/i8+. We have dogs so the ability to remove hair from carpet as well as laminate flooring is important to us. I do feel the J7+ was worth the price difference for us (avoid pet waste and cords better), ymmv.

I don't think the fill sensors will allow the bins too get that full. My S9+ will intentionally go and empty the bin even if it's not full and resume. It really does mess up the airflow and pressure design filling them that much I think. Possibly try half full on the test. I'm watching anyway. Thanks
