- A documentary on the preparation of 'Beauty and the Beast' for Broadway.
Hosted by Robbie Benson (voice of the cartoon Beast) with footage of Terrence Mann (The Beast), Susan Egan (Belle), Tom Bosley (Maurice), Gary Beach (Lumiere) and the OBC.
True since Howard Ashman(R.I.P.), the executive producer was a Broadway producer. He put the feeling of Broadway into "Beauty and the Beast", "The Little Mermaid", and "Aladdin". He was on the verge of becoming the next Walt Disney and then just when "Beauty and the Beast" is nearing completion and "Aladdin" is still in the making, Howard dies from AIDS. He would've loved to have produced this and would've been so proud of it. I'm sure they worked hard on to make it successful for Howard's sake.
20 years ago this month! And most people on Broadway at the time thought it wouldn't even run one year-but it ran 13 years on Broadway!
hopefully they'll bring it back soon!!
Unfortunately I doubt they will due to the changes the movies made and because it's probably the only version younger viewers have seen so the will probably leave disappointed.
and it’s getting a revival!
Robby Benson was the Beast in the Disney movie edition and I find it so cool that he's narratoring the behind the Scenes look at he the musical version!!!!
"Schwarzenegger eat your heart out." Hahaha
R.I.P. Tom Bosley! He was a great actor.
He was a good maurise
Loved your video!
Blessings and Love,
Dashama
Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite Disney films of all time and so is the musical and I've also love wizard of oz , little mermaid, and the lion king but beauty and the beast is one of the most beautiful stories ever told
Wow ! Great and cool video !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i absolutely love this musical :) belle is my dream role
They should bring this back. Costumes are amazing and I love how Lumiere really lives up to his name.
I was so lucky! Got to see this a year before it closed, and I think Terrance Mann or some other actor was the Beast at the Lunt-Fontaine Theater!
WOW. the beauty and the beast movie was released in 91? i was 4 years old. that was one of my favorite vhs, i still have it, and it's still one of my favorite movies :)
Omg I’m cogsworth in my community’s production and I’m so hyped!!!!!!
They said that since of course on Broadway they can't make the actors smaller to be objects, they came up with the idea of the servants slowly becoming objects as time passes. When doing, "Human Again," they really look like they're close to becoming FULL objects. Look at Lumiere, Cogsworth and Babette. I remember at one scene Lumiere says to Cogsworth that they will eventually become... THINGS! Even mentions that the spell is progressing slower on them than on others who have already become things. Although, I heard they decided not to have Lumiere's head look that advanced because it basically hid the actor's face but very believable, I must say. They even originally wanted Lumiere's head to light up like his hands.
The cast and crew of this play say that it was hard to keep up and stay on schedule. Well, when you think about how long it took Disney to FINALLY make it's own version of "Beauty and the Beast", I think the cast and crew were all moving pretty fast.
Walt Disney wanted to make his own version of "Beauty and the Beast" back in 1937 right after making "Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs", but he could never figure it out. It took the talents of Howard Ashman and Alan Mankin to accomplish such a task.
This has to be the most dangerous Broadway musical
Why do you say that?
beauty and the beast original cast videos have the most deranged comments. I so wish disney would released the show with the Terrance Mann on blu ray.
"She's supposed to love me." lol!
I wouldn't doubt that Robby Benson's son, Zephyr, has similarities in his voice. But it is GREAT that Robby Benson wants to keep his family life really hush hush. I don't blame him, because anything that involves his family is ABSOLUTELY NONE of OUR BUSINESS!!!
It was my first Broadway Show!
this looks amazing
A friend of my family played the Beast when this toured. I was too young to remember it, but my brother got to go back stage and watch him transform fromt he Beast to the Prince.
The best broadway show ever!
i'm playing Lumiere. i gotta admit when we first began doing the music for the show, i was a bit uncomfortable having all eyes on me for the beginning of "Be Our Guest."
@phantom4evr101 Actually it's been brought back to Broadway and is on tour. I recently saw it and liked it! They say it's been downgraded a little mainly in sets and costumes, they aren't as detailed. The original sets and costumes were disposed of when the show closed in 2007. To remake all that detailed stuff would be expensive and in this economy expensive is not a good word. I'm just happy it's back! I enjoyed it!
P.S. If money gets better maybe they'll be able to add more to it.
God love them all for percorming in those amaxibg, but incredibky warm costumes!
This looks so cool. Wish I could've seen it on broadway when it was still around.
And every last is covered with HAIR!
robbie benson

Theme of this play and even for the movie. Love can transform you. :)
He was indeed. He played Roger DeBris.
Alan looks so young here!
Yeah, he was almost 45 at the time. Besides, he's a great composer.

Broadwaypuppet Must have been in development or its a simple error.
Yeah just a simple error. I just looked him up and he did makeup for GB 2
Yay CATS and Beauty and the Beast!!!!!!!
Were doing this play at my school my jack plays beast my friend tommy plays cogsworth and I play lumiere
Ahhhh! Beauty and the Beast...I'm so depressed that I never got to see this on broadway before it closed =*( yeah the tour is coming to SoCal but visually I have heard and see that it is a let down....Please broadway give us a revival!!!!!
Is Robbie Benson (the narrator here and voice of cartoon Beast) related to Jodie Benson (voice of Ariel)? that would be SO COOL!!! :D
I really want to play belle shes one of my favs!!
The guy telling us everything is the guy who played The Beast in the OG Movie
wish this would come to the west end/broadway again
@EntertainmentAddams Sure is. Mal Beineke. His run is nearly over, though. Get there fast, anyone who hasn't seen it yet.
Oh i hope so...I wish I had seen it before it closed.
Get your hands out of your pockets when you're talking to me Robbie! :D
@Dbakyda They're actually married. I don't know if they're still together, but yeah, they're marriedd
muy bien todo esta hermoso
If you mean as in temperature wise, you're right. Terrance Mann(the beast said) it was like wearing 3 winter coats while running around the block. It took about an hour and a half to get that whole beast thing on him but it only took about 7 minutes for him to get it all off. Mainly because he practically tore it off fast without hesitation, I know I would! HAHA!
Part of being an actor is having to put up with uncomfortable make up and wardrobe, but as they say,"That's show business."
Narrated by Robby Benson
List of prosthetic/headpiece/mechanical items John Dods made for the show: Chip Animatronic Head, Madame de la Grande Bouche Headpiece, Cogsworth Headpiece, Beast Prosthetics and Headpiece, and Mask.
Yeah quick question how do they do the whole teacart illusion with Chip? When was an animatronic head used and when was it the real actor playing Chip???
Broadwaypuppet The animatronic "head on a platter" was only used for the scene, when Chip tells Mrs. Potts that there is a girl in the castle. The rest is the real actor. The illusion is done on Broadway by a mirror in the cart and the curved X pattern on the front to make it seem hollow. DIY: Make a mold of your actors head (look for tutorials), sculpt a replica of the headpiece on (be sure to sculpt in open eyes and mouth). Then, cover it in layers of liquid latex, paint it with acrylic, and cut a hole in the side. Then, glue it to a platter.
It's almost hard to believe that I was 2 when the movie came out, and the play came out on Broadway, when I was 5!!! (makes low whistle) I personally think that there's so much more ACTION and emotion in the play. Sorry, I just think that the play is so much more LIFE in the play. I mean don't get me wrong, the movies got it, too. I just think that the play has A LOT more explanations to it. Sorry. I actually honestly ADORE both.
AStarAlmost by the time the original film came out I was still in my mother's womb. March 1992 was my birth month.
ghost busters 3 he means ghostbuster 2
I want to see it come to salt lake city Utah
lol yea i meant temperature-wise. i cant imagine wearing that and performing under the stage lights for 2 or so hours...
Beauty And The Beast - Backstage Part 1 Of 3 😀❤️😃😍💖💝
Never saw it in westend wen I had the chance to I kept asking my parents and there excuse was expensive no matter how much I asked it never happened till its last running year still never happened after it closed I had a right tantrum with my parents missed out on the uk tour aswell which I never knew about even if it gets a revival for west end for future I will hope to see it now that I am working but will not be the same as I did not see the original staging and production
You can find the performance shown in Vegas I'll send a link
@EntertainmentAddams Serious? What character?
Also, forgot to put in, Lumiere Headpieces, 2 in all.
The bootlegs are usually far away, and they did make a lot of changes to the show, especially the complexity of the Beast's makeup, though I saw a videotape of a 1999 performance w/Andrea McArdle (Part of Lincoln Centers Archives in NYC), and saw a change. First, his headpiece looks more like human hair, but with a wick. Later (more like act 2), it is a bit thinner and taller, with wax dripping around the wick. The changes could also be explained if this video documents the Texas premiere, where according to Terrance Mann (Beast), the makeup was changed for Broadway at his request.
There was a Ghostbusters 3?
6:38 ...........Ghostbusters 3?
5:50 Beast shakes fur like a dog!
Is there a ghostbusters 3 because I can't find it
Marcello Antonio sl there a ghsobusutsrs cnan fndcld ligne it marcllo anotnoio, li y a ans bonjour

Marcello Antonio ligne ther ghobusyts 3 ans beucsl
where's chip?
how'd they do the transformation on stage with all that makeup on ?
Djizzle96 during the castle battle while the objects are fighting, the Beast is backstage taking off the makeup and puts on a Beast mask that can easily come off that doesn’t look as real but he’s only on stage in it for a couple minutes. During the transformation, he then pulls off of the mask and tucks in in the blanket that he gets covered in.
wow, so serious :0
does anyone know where i can find the full Broadway show online
theres a full 1995 full broadway here in youtube
+AizzellMio There's a full recording of the 1995 LA cast with James Barbour as Beast. Unless I'm missing it, there are only live audio recordings of the complete original Broadway cast.
Boy a lot of people in the comments played Babette
Nedelands
But.... But who played Lefou?
❤❤❤
Terrence Mann's hair color is not like that anymore lol :)
Now it's a glorious white mane. ;)
scipwraec Amen to that!!!
its funny how people were all XoX over having to do all these SFX things back then.. today people would just do it xD
No, it was a mistake
DID THAT FOOLIO JUST SAY GHOSTBUSTERS 3???
Beth Fowler's and Terrence Mann's talent were wasted on musical theatre
why is he talking like that? he sounds like he's trying too hard. Way to go clint eastwood
