Thank you so much for class & walk around to look at these Heavy duty Hauler fronts. 😊 I just wish there was more than ONE manufacturer that made the carry body as heavy duty as a regular Trailer. The RV would beef up the Framing on the body's. It's amazing you can get into a class #8 semi for about the same price as the new heavy Duty 1 Ton. I like the bigger condo sleeper the Fed ex has on their overnight carrier.
I spent about 6 months researching various states, registration costs, and insurance costs. I decided to register my rig as Property Carrying in SC and my total cost for coverage for full time RV insurance through Progressive for the HDT and 5th wheel is $1,691.00 per year. Just sharing info. Btw I just retired as an Independent Flatbed Trucker for 25 years. Great channel folks!! Stay safe. ✌️
Ok, I swear Sheila sweetheart, you started to get the twang accent as u were talking to the gentleman…betya Todd noticed when he was editing the vid 🤣😘🍻.
We have commercial truck shows where HDTs or even retired trucks, show. You can look up Truck shows. One of the biggest one is in Louisville, KY. Great American Truck show is what it is called.
Nice job on the video, & it was nice meeting you there @ the rally, Todd & Sheila. The options on these rigs are endless & there's not two trucks alike amongst all of us. Once you come to 'The Dark Side', you'll never turn back. Safe Travels-Have Fun, Craig & Janelle Reuter
I just bought an HDT had it at the rally I had the red international ProStar not the one that was for sale. The other one I pull a 45 foot fifth wheel with a four-door Jeep behind that and I’m 87 foot long been all over the country. Luckily haven’t gotten stopped once. And passed by state troopers wave. Two state troopers but never bothered me once I like the truck but if I really had my choice and if they weren’t so expensive, I would have a sport chassis 112 to me. That is the ideal truck but they’re just too expensive for me Love your channel you’ll find something out there that’ll suit you I must say it’s amazing how comfortable they make those heavy duty trucks to ride it and pull in what I pull I’m getting 8.3 miles at a gallon 8.2 somewhere in there
There are a couple on UA-cam that have a cool setup. They have a Volvo and they had a stacker built on the bed so they can carry their two Camam motorcycle on the bed. They are stacked two high sorry I don't remember the channels name
Wow, that was a lot of info that I really didn't think would be interesting but it is! And I had no idea Cyril and Mary Jo bought an HDT! Can't wait to see the finished product. Great informational video!
AWESOME!! AWESOME! Lots of information. Have been following several HDT channels to gather as much information as possible. Tremendous amount of information - awesome job interviewing and asking questions - thank you! Hope we can get to a HDT rally on the East one of these years.
Jesse does a beautiful job on those trucks. Gregg at RVHaulers with Gregg has about 500 videos about a lot of trucks and different ways people travel and many different styles of beds on the trucks.
If you go off road to park or whatever, tandems will get you stuck especially when you’re light. The only reason I’d run tandems is weight. A good aerodynamic truck with a single axle and super singles should exceed 10 mpg.
Thank you Soooo much for this video!! I have met and had breakfast with Jim and Kellie with Suite Travels. What a nice couple to share their hdt knowledge as well.
Thanks for the information on HDT, I think we might be seeing one in your future. If I was ten years younger Sandy and I would definitely have a HDT. I drove a Peterbuilt for 15 years.
Nice truck stop there, been there many times. Also, just outside of town picked up nailers there many times that went out of the U.S. to different countries.
Fantastic video. We have an HDT and spent a lot of time trying to find videos like yours to get ideas for our bed. Thankfully, our bed is done!!! We are sad we missed you guys at the Rally; we couldn't make it this year.
HDT sounds like lab jargon...."let's do an AFB,PAS & GMS on that HDT" and let's do it STAT. We learned today that SOB is "some other brand" Who knew our Airstream was an SOB ? Great info ~
HDTs intrigue me so much! There’s a lot to unwrap with them. We don’t have a need for one right now since we’re only weekend warriors as far as camping goes. But full time with one looks cool!
It really just depends on the state. In a few states the answer is nope. Simply look on the side of them and you will see "Not for Hire" and that simply tells the DOT that its a private vehicle and not commercial.
We love our new Proteng fire suppression system in our 395 rig. Just got it 10/7/23 and we feel much safer because of it. Really good video Todd and Sheila.
What I’m considering that I haven’t seen yet is an expediter type rig such a straight truck build a living quarters into the cargo box have a trailer for car tools etc. it’s under 10,000 so I can only have to maintain a class B license. I haven’t seen anyone work on this idea yet but that’s what I’m considering always interesting thoughts on that the only thing I haven’t planned out is how to move from through the cab\sleeper into the living quarters because the dogs have to be some independence of movement there. Just throwing it out there I’d love to hear thoughts
I’m curious about the length of the Smart Car (106.1”) versus legal width on the road (102”). Doesn’t that put you over width?? I’ve been working with eTrailer for putting a gooseneck ball setup instead of a fifth wheel setup to pull our 39’ Alpine with a Morryde pin box. Do you know of anyone using this setup?? Thanks and we love your channel !! ✌️
@SwitchItUpLife lol. That is a great idea. Just set up a theatre in the condo and let him hide from the highway. Back is getting better. We are still trying to get the wound completely closed up yet, starting therapy right after this next weekend.
Over the years I have seen the Toyota version of the smart car, someone said it is no longer imported to the US. I'm not sure of what it's called. Also our daughter lives in Lakeland and we have spent the last two winters there, nice area to get out of the cold. Maybe we will see you guys at the Tampa RV show!
I have asked many people about HDT setups being over length (most are longer than the 65’ RV max length in almost all states). I realize that it’s mostly not enforced but I am concerned with liability in a wreck, God forbid, not a ticket.
Something you really need to look at is the combination length of 65ft when thinking about an HDT. I have now been stopped 6x for length at 63ft and mine is a 45ft class a with a 17ft trailer and my car over hangs 1ft . So if you want harassed buy one and travel like I do. Ps: most campgrounds have maximum length Allowed also.
Good video. As a past owner operator in trucking I really don't see a clear path to this decision. The term mission statement is a good one for some people but not all. For some of us truckers who are retired and have spent a small fortune keeping diesels on the road to make money this HDT stuff makes no sense to me at least to enjoy rv life style. If one buys a 45 foot spacecraft yes please don't show up to tow with a 3500.....you will need a bigger power unit for sure. Just remember one thing, when a 12L to 15L diesel suffers a catastrophic failure your rebuild cost will be a good 50% of a new pickup. Other than that I love the designs and structure these owners do on their rigs.
LOL, if ever there was one word to describe the consumer market in the United States it is clearly "EXCESS". Bigger equals badder equals "I gotta have it". 😂 the stuff that people get sold as necessities but in reality will never be used blows me away. Keep spending folks the economy needs to keep rollin. 😊
As a retired truck driver my opinion is super singles should be outlawed. They are dangerous and cause major damage, not to mention you have a flat/blow out, you can't go anywhere, you are dead in the water.
Most of the tire shops now carry the supper single so a service truck could service you. Yes you may need a new rim if you ran on it flat. I was one of the first to put them on my truck, and had no problems the four years I ran with them. If I had a single axle I would not put the supper singles.
We can go on an on about roadside catastrophes. Be positive. Do the best with what you've got and have some fun. Enough Debbie Downers in the world. Don't need another. You're not going to keep driving on a dually flat either.
@@williamrobinson6680 when the tire alone costs 800-1000 it’s hardly being a downer. More like a word of caution. They have their good points as well. It’s a point to consider
Ok the guy about the super singles are not more fuel efficient this is a joke. Yall can keep your droopy nose asphalt sniffers trucks. ...I have a 1995 kenworth w900l cat 625 18spd 355 gears. I can average 9.5 to 11.5 mpg. By the way these trucks are class 8 trucks. The single axle trucks will ride rougher than a tandan hands down. Also safer in the rain. Oh by the way I have a 156 in sleeper
We built ours keeping the axels. We loved the Kenworth but we had to keep in mind budget. Thanks for your input even thought you may not agree. With your knowledge you could help with some great tips.
Sorry but this is not a very smart move financially. Dumping all this money into a depreciating asset like an RV is crazy. Right now interest rates for homes are at all time high and buying a house is harder than ever for most Americans. There are tons of youtubers who quite RV life after just 3 to 4 years. After you get tired of RV life and want to go back into a house, it will be much more difficult to get back in due to increasing house prices and interest rates throughout the nation. I bought my 3bed and 2bath house in San Jose California for 800K in 2019. Now it is worth $1.3M and interest rates are at 8%! Unless you guys are already very wealthy, it is all fun and games until reality hits.
Everything you said is true. It can also be said about boating (my hobby), car racing, traveling, or even eating out instead of cooking at home. I doubt many people do this for financial gain reasoning.

Great video! I really enjoyed talking with both of you during the rally!! I hope we cross paths again in the near future.
Love the idea of HDT I cannot believe nobody is doing this with cabovers love the video guys safe travels
I vote Volvo and Space Craft with Jesse doing the bed. Time to get that order started

I've always wanted an HDT. No idea what I'd do with it, just want one.
It's still a semi
I'm a truck driver for 24 years this year. We go into a lot of tight places. So turn radius is important.

We agree -They are a great couple
I love the content. I have watched the video 2 times it is so fascinating thank you
Very informative. Just not sure our HOA would like one of those in the driveway.
Looking forward to more adventures! Best of luck as a trucker!

Do they have to have a CDL to drive those
WOW Guys ... Great video .... A lot of information. Thanks for the class on HDT hauling.

Hello there!

Thanks for watching!
Fantastic HDT voyage. Great video.
Todd I'm seeing a green Volvo HDT in your future.
Great video, a lot of information for sure
Thanks for watching! How's your back? An HDT Would allow Alix to go hide on those narrow roads - just send him to the back to lay down lol
@SwitchItUpLife lol. That is a great idea. Just set up a theatre in the condo and let him hide from the highway.
Back is getting better. We are still trying to get the wound completely closed up yet, starting therapy right after this next weekend.

Any idea what the general cost differential is between an hdt and a pick up?
try Richy Brothers auction 4 cheap trucks
Do you have to have a special license to drive a HDT units?
Depends on your state- check with your state DMV Kansas requires a non commercial Class A
Volvos have an unbeatable turning radius
I have asked many people about HDT setups being over length (most are longer than the 65’ RV max length in almost all states). I realize that it’s mostly not enforced but I am concerned with liability in a wreck, God forbid, not a ticket.
@SwitchItUpLife Todd, Not all SpaceCraft RV's are built on the Semi-Trailers, Most are 5th Wheel Trailers.
tie down your f5th wheel when not using in transit
Something you really need to look at is the combination length of 65ft when thinking about an HDT. Everyone using a hdt has resources. I e money. So a 45k engine replacement is not a problem
if you purchase used a duel axle is way more easy to find

Volvo trucks rode and drive really well.
