Looking back, I really like that they said it came from a wheat/grain facility, then looking back at ep one they dodged a bunch of bullets. No pancakes, no biscuits, no cookies, no cake. Joel and Sarah were dodging jabs they didn't even know were coming.
I love how at the end of the episode, Joel leaves and Ellie stands there not knowing what to do. That was the difference between them. Ellie wanted to talk about things but Joel said in the game, "Shit happens, and then we move on." I love how they're showing more and saying less so far since they haven't opened up to each other yet.
Also the shrug and sigh that Ellie gives, as if another person she was possibly getting close to (becoming a minor "mother figure" to her after giving her advice and saying i want to keep you alive and calling her brave) has died and left her. The picture of decay and destruction and death leaving Ellie alone in that shot is great cinematography.
Fun Fact: The opening scene in Indonesia takes place on September 24th, 2003 two days before the premiere episode's events. In that first episode a short radio segment mentions "disturbances" in Jakarta. Much like the opening scene of the first episode. This episode also opens with more background of the Cordyceps virus. Showing its initial outbreak in Indonesia. Also, I'm so glad non-gamers get to experience this amazing story.
If that was happening two days before the outbreak, it was handled very badly. Joel and Billy didn't even know about it two days later, the whole world should have known within a day to get prepared.
@@gh3meister True to a certain extent. I feel like in real life if this were to happen. The government would try to keep quiet for as long as possible to avoid wide spread panic. It just happened to spread much faster than anticipated. Realistically even 2 days isn’t enough preparation time for an event like this. Because nobody would truly know the extent or severity of the matter until it got to them and it was too late. So with that I think the show has done an amazing job at bringing the realism and horror of a pandemic of this magnitude to life.
Another fun fact about that opening scene. Here is a comment I saw in another video “As an Indonesian myself and as a long time fan of Christine Hakim (the actress who played the doctor in the opening scene), I was absolutely surprised to see her in this series. Didn't expect her to be here but hey I'm glad that the creators got the right phenomenal Indonesian actress to play the character. She's a legend in my country so I'm proud for her to be in this, she really commands her screen time” I think it’s pretty cool they did that
My brother perched up in his seat when he heard those clickers but as soon as we saw them, I freaked out while my brother was like "THEY DID IT! THOSE ARE DEFINITELY CLICKERS!"
I think the reason that Tess doesn't say that Ellie's wound is three weeks old is b/c they were already doubting it to begin with. Unlike in the game where they thought that the scar was evident enough, they were still paranoid about Ellie in this episode. The new wound is way more evident to them b/c they were actually there when she got bit the 2nd time.
I don't know if you caught it, but before she asked about infected who's head was split, she referenced bloaters when she asked about super infected who throw bags of spores at people.
They are absolutely killing it with the show. They keep true to the game for like 90%, but they aren't afraid to deviate or expand on where they need too. The opening has been absolutely amazing. So far it really stands on its own merit, ad seen by the the people who didn't play the games but are loving it can't wait to see more.
Gotta love how all zombie media has us ready for a jump scare at the opening. I think one of the creepiest/coolest things of TLOU is that the fungus needs a living body to function.
People really shouldn't be saying you're spoiling the game. It's been out and available to play for years in several versions. It's far past the time where people can cry about "spoiling".
I'll say this, I don't think Mello has given out any spoilers. That being said, you can't just say people who don't play games should've played the game by now if they didn't want to be spoiled. This show isn't just for the fanbase, there are people who never play video games at all that are getting interested in the show. Just like they've had 10 years to familiarize themselves with the story, we have a whole internet where we can discuss this that isn't a reaction channel. Talk about it on Reddit, talk about it on Discord, but it doesn't NEED to be discussed in the comments section, there are other avenues that are less likely to harm someone's experience. Once again, not attacking Mello or anyone here directly, just saying for the sake of being considerate. I want new fans to be welcomed, even if their presence makes the discussion of spoilers kind of difficult for those who know.
@@nocontender6409 I think it's more game details spoiling the show. For example: Spoilers below Clickers weren't outright named in the show, but a lot of us have already named them, and the one infected that kisses Tess, some were considering that it could be a stalker. In the discussion that followed, someone ended up detailing some of the attributes of a Stalker. There hasn't even been mention of this type of infected in the show, but people are kind of spoiling the concept for those who don't know.
@@210rebelboy Sure I guess, but if people go around watching reactions where right off the top the reactor says "I've played the game and I hope this is faithful and good" then I don't think those folks can be surprised when a little lore or world info is given. Intentionally or not. Especially when there are a bunch of reactors who haven't played the game and everyone seems super vocal about whether they've played it or not.
@nocontender6409 I'm just saying that if most of those reactors are making promises to keep spoilers out, the least we can do is respect their wishes. I'm sure Mello wouldn't want the comments spoiling things for the audience either. And to be fair, all anyone really has to do is throw a little spoiler warning before their comment. I don't think anyone who accidently spoils something should be blamed either, though. It's hard to remember which facts the show has revealed. Nobody's perfect. Apparently Tess’s kiss was symbolically the kiss she wanted to give Joel but couldn’t. I had thought about it from a scientific pov that “fungus gotta transmit & she wasn’t trashing around to make them bite her, makes sense” but this more metaphoric pov also makes so much sense! Also the way Joel looked at her, just piercing nonwithstanding stare. That last look spoke a million words. He knew it would be the last time he would see her so he was “taking a picture” of her. Then forced himself to keep going without looking back…like damn Naughty Dog needs to make a 20 Year Blank Period prequel game. Get us that JoelxTess backstory.
the beginning of this episode really hit hard, just showing your the gravity of it all when she said all of that. adds a lot of weight. Best video game adaption to screen ever so far. Also, Pascal and Ramsey still killing it, especially Pascal.
I really love how they’re leveraging the fact that they’re on a different medium to do stuff they weren’t able to easily do in the game - the pre-infection historical segments (it feels like they’re maybe doing one at the start of each ep?), and the way they’re filling out the lore of the infected. There’s no way you would have gotten away with the mouth tendrils in the game, or the stampede that they used in place of the military in the state building. My wife (who hasn’t seen anything from the game) was complaining at one point that Tess was a “typical female side character with no backstory”… I had to wait until the reveal at the massacre to tell her that was why 😢

This episode was great. I played the game when it first came out so I forgot some scenes but the way the clickers look I was impressed. They did a great job
She did said her bite was 3 weeks old, being the bite they reveal in the first episode after they killed the guard guy and they find out Ellie was infected. That bite from episode two is new and is a way to give the characters a real time proof that she is, in fact, inmune, that's why it's different and that's why it works when compared to Tess bite, as they both got it basically at the same time but one is nothing and the other is already developing quickly
Agreed. The people who are complaining that the 14-year-old character isn’t pretty enough are more disgusting than that tendril kiss. (Yes, I know the actress is older, but that’s like arguing the men on To Catch a Predator didn’t REALLY break any laws because the girl they thought was a minor was played by an actress who is older.)
I just had a crazy thought, what if the last of us had a sound sensor so being quiet would be even more terrifying because one loud sound in real life and mr click and his buddies will be coming for you

And yeah I absolutely LOVED it! this episode I was just as excited like you were Mell I'm actually mad that I have to wait a week!!!! to see more they are doing an excellent job recreating the world of The Last Of Us and even with the changes they are hitting home runs every time! And you're not spoling anything besides this game came out in 2013! if people didn't want to play the game there are a TON!! of let's play of the game here on you tube people could have watched them if they didn't still? then don't cry if there is a ton of us who know the story of such a MASTERPIECE of game that The Last Of Us is so thell them to stop crying!
Mel you are so right!! I love the actress that plays Ellie!! People just wanna finda reason to complain.. i think this show is so perfect! I never played the game and im enjoying this!
I’m a little worried about not having the spores. It seems like it would be easier to take out the infected if they just have to worry about the physical contact. Plus they got to rewrite a chase from the 2nd game for 2nd season and I don’t know if it’s going to be as cool as it was in pt 2. Other than that loving the series and your reactions!
I think ellie grabbed the 2 grenades that landed by her. I was all "grab those, 2 won't change anything", then, when Joel drug her away, there weren't any at her feet. She either took them or it's a continuity error... I suppose maybe she just moved away from them while Joel and tess were talking instead of grabbing them... but I think she pulled a carol (when she washed Rick's pants at the Atlanta camp) and pocketed them.
Mel my guy, if you have time please react to An American Werewolf in London. I tried to find you reacting to this, but couldn’t. PLEASE it’s a classic my dude!
I am convinced the spore conversation went something like this: Person 1: Let's be as faithfully to the game as possible. Person 2: I totally agree. Hey, we got Pedro Pascal to play Joel. Person 1: ... I think we should get rid of the gas masks. That being said I do like that they go with the interconnectedness of fungus to make up the spore factor. I also agree that I like the focus on the infected rather than the military chasing them more.
If you're complaining about spoilers from a game that came out 10 years ago and has been re-released 3 times since then, stfu. You had plenty of chances to get into it and you probably shouldn't be watching reaction videos for the live action adaptation AFTER the episode aired.
Idk if this applies to anybody else but for me, that entire Jakarta scene gave me Contagion vibes. Like the tone, the cinematography, it felt like a scene ripped out of Contagion

(Yes, I know the actress is older, but that’s like arguing the men on To Catch a Predator didn’t REALLY break any laws because the girl they thought was a minor was played by an actress who is older.)
I agree man, this show feels like it will be The Show of the Year, or Top 3 for me hands down, everything about this show is absolutely incredible.
13:37 Mell: *Laughs gleefully as Joel, Ellie, and Tess get attacked by clickers* 😂😂🤣🤣
I like how stepping on the glass alerted one of the infected because it's like that in the game I'm pretty sure
I just had a crazy thought, what if the last of us had a sound sensor so being quiet would be even more terrifying because one loud sound in real life and mr click and his buddies will be coming for you
8:32 Rest in peace wooden pallet. You’ll be missed
Mello every 5 seconds: “Hey that’s like the video game 😃”
Ikr Like Everyone One Else! Isn't That Cool?!
I'm so sad about Anna Torv but damn.. she killed it. Love you Tess.
i like that its the same, but different, but also expanded lol like they added an expansion pack
Dude you’re spot on, this was better than what they did in the game. Pissing me off people still complaining. This was awesome.
I agree Mell! whoever says Bella Ramsey is ugly their stupid!! they obviously have not seen pictures of her with her long hair smiling she has a beautiful smile and is doing a FANTASTIC! job as Ellie.
Bro didn’t blur the naked woman’s reflection 😂😂
The woman who played Mahrlene played in Greenleaf. A terrific, beautiful actress!
I’m right there with you. I just got Part 1 on PS5 and I’m playing along side the show.
Mel you are so right!! I love the actress that plays Ellie!! People just wanna finda reason to complain.. i think this show is so perfect! I never played the game and im enjoying this!
I assume there's isolated islands where fungus didn't spread. Wonder what would happen to them
I know it would have been hilarious to watch you play this series for the first time…. 😭😭😭
Yay the intro🤗
She made me cry lol awesome acting
I’m a little worried about not having the spores. It seems like it would be easier to take out the infected if they just have to worry about the physical contact. Plus they got to rewrite a chase from the 2nd game for 2nd season and I don’t know if it’s going to be as cool as it was in pt 2. Other than that loving the series and your reactions!
It's been years since I played the game and that clicker sound effect still freezes my blood.
3:00 You dont have that in the game because they change it in the show from spores to cordyceps.
Best alarm system ever
GIRAFFES, we must have the giraffes!
Common Fanboy, we all have played the game, just enjoy, see it in a new light.....damn
I want that Indonesian lady in more show's...what a great actor she is.
I loved this episode can't wait for the rest to come out. Nico Parker who plays Sarah will be in another episode
Mel my guy, if you have time please react to An American Werewolf in London. I tried to find you reacting to this, but couldn’t. PLEASE it’s a classic my dude!
I am convinced the spore conversation went something like this:
Person 1: Let's be as faithfully to the game as possible.
I think Tess got bitten the same time Ellie did, maybe when she got the Clicker with the axe? Really good episode
Clicker scene will go down in legend.. fkn amazing 😮
These episodes FLY by!
Idk if this applies to anybody else but for me, that entire Jakarta scene gave me Contagion vibes. Like the tone, the cinematography, it felt like a scene ripped out of Contagion
Happy New year chinese 🎇🎆🎉🎊🇨🇳
Lmao @ the weird people 😂
