I really do hope that this device can have the trackpads function with steam input. Even though my use of it being a secondary camera on my deck has been significantly reduced, I still use it for it's touch menus and mouse region.

A legion go 2tb version microscenter exclusive regularly sells for $750 but this thing seems very promising. If they put 32 gigs of RAM on that 8840U it'll sell out

This is the closest a competitor has gotten to actually being a steam deck competitor in my eyes because it has the 2 front trackpads and uses linux (wish they didn't go with a Manjaro based handheld however, Manjaro has let their authentication certs expire in the past). The issue is, it's missing the grip buttons on the back and I don't know if steam input can use the trackpads. I _need_ those to play Warframe comfortably. For me it's 90% of the way there to "Oh I've got to have this even though I have a deck" but faceplants at the finish line.

Well for what it’s worth, you could always install Bazzite.
And they did supposedly pick hardware that works on Linux so it shouldn’t be too big of a deal.

Valve said they're waiting till they have enough technological progress, so it'll probably be in 2026 or 2027 because this is the time scheduled to launch 2nm CPUs.

I have De Quervain's Tenosynovitis so doing a lot of gaming with my thumbs causes me physical pain. The back buttons and trackpads of the Steam Deck have been a huge help, and the macro buttons look great too - but not at the cost of back buttons. We have a lot of fingers, let's use them.

I'd have preferred them use Nobara OS Steam Deck Edition since that also is a Linux distro that uses KDE plasma as the desktop environment but for me 2 of the more important things is it has a actual gaming mode that is really similar to the Steam Decks actaul OS's Gaming Mode & it comes with plenty of the stuff made by the same team behind Proton GE already installed with the OS no need to find them in the app manager. Other than that since they're at least not using a OS like windows that has yet to actually have a version thats handheld friendly which a few of Linux distros are already doing they already seem like they're thinking of the end user experience in my personal opinion unlike the other companies making handhelds.

like legion go, the right trackpad is too low on the device to use it as main input. I can see why they do this, otherwise the device would be too "chonky". Personally I'm not gonna go back to stick aiming

I don't really feel like Steam has actual competitors because of all other parts of Steam. But thinking about things just now, even if a bunch of competitors create viable alternatives to Steam Deck that get adopted, it's kind of a huge win for Steam anyway. Because these portable gaming PCs that create what is basically an enhanced console experience just bring more people to PC gaming and potentially even takes them away from console gaming. Steam is the king of PC gaming and the dominant player in the PC games marketplace. Therefore it's bringing them a ton more business. And it also brings more incentive for Sony. Microsoft, and Nintendo (and their 2nd party studios) to bring their games to PC. This is probably part of the reason why Steam is not trying to hinder its competitors from producing a similar experience to Steam Deck.

Honestly, I do think that nearly all of the handhelds on the market are competitors for the Steam Deck - they're just quite bad competition.
I would say that *currently* the closest competitor is the Ally, although if I had my choice I'd say the Go is better competition.
But it is my personal opinion that many of the people buying these Windows handhelds are majorly comprised of people that fundamentally do not actually know what they want, or rather, they think they want something that they don't. This, as mentioned, isn't the case for all, but it has been my anecdotal observation to be the case. Additionally, I do not actually think this is necessarily a bad thing. I would prefer the hypothetical reality where everyone does ample due diligence and has the self-awareness to always (or nearly always) make the correct decision the first time, but that isn't reality; People are human and they need to learn.
To be fair, it also happens that I made similar decisions in my younger years, which likely influences my conclusion-making.
Regarding the Orange Pi Neo, like many of these devices, it will almost certainly come down to the software experience. I believe that Linux provides the better platform for that to be the case, given all of Window's restrictions, but that remains to be seen. But in general, I am excited to see how all of this plays out.

    • @HiTechLoLife

At the very least, even if Manjaro Gaming Edition isn't as good as we hope, there's hope as they've supposedly selected hardware that's known to work well on Linux.
Which means you could replace Manjaro GE with Bazzite, or Chimera, or Nobara.

I wish the specs told us how big and heavy it is. It’s not the size of the 3ds just yet so I can’t fit it in my pocket but it would be nice if it was lighter than the steam deck. That mf is heavy bro. It’d be nice to have something that I could take to school that isn’t a million pounds

they will outdo steram deck but at what cost ? just until recently steam deck reached 300 euros for base model while every other so called competitor goes for twice a much with little to no gain over steam deck and definetly not twice the performance like the cost might suggest.
Might just get steam deck and be done with for couple years until these competitors get priced accordingly and not like decent gaming laptop that just smokes these things.

      @HiTechLoLife  3 місяці тому

They did give out pricing for USD.

Ok, this seems to be like a hype video. It's cool, but when you start dissing back buttons and acting like it's better to be gone. I started to question the validity of this video. It's noce to have more buttons. Because most people hate claw gripping and being forced to hold a special button to make every button do an alternate action (a lot of rpg games), having more options is better. Tbh, even the steam deck doesn't have enough buttons. But it's the best we have. This device is definitely not better for removing them
