  • Archival footage shot by a filmmaker while visiting East Africa in 1967.
It contains stock footage of Mombasa, a coastal city in southeastern Kenya: an East Africa Railways and Harbours station, Hotel Oceanic (designed by German architect Ernst May in the 1950s and demolished in 2000, located on the current site of the Aga Khan Academy), Fort Jesus, people crossing a river on a ferry, Kenyan people dancing traditional dances for tourists, USS Fiske (DD-842) ship passing in front of the coast (probably on its way to US after serving in Vietnam), people walking in the streets, tourists swimming in the ocean, people at the central train station, and more.

It was ahead of Singapore, dubai, tel aviv name it. Tourists resorts were always full. I saw part of this era up to 94 when the infrastructure fell apart, the trash piles, foul smell, ugly chaotic matatu, beach boy menace... And terrorism. I still visit the now 3 star resorts to reminisce the good old days.. Back then they were visited by the concorde class, now not one white person in sight. The reef hotel, bamburi beach et al.

" Mombasa Island was´nt meant to accomodate so many people from every corner of the republic! Mombasa was clean when the natives knew who lives next door! Then came the people from hinterland (Wabara) who brought their culture and changed the land scape! Some never knew what cleanness was, used to use the streets as toilets and threw every garbbage in the street!! They were´nt or still not used to our "Swahili way of Living" including cleanness which is part of our belief of our Islam religion!! Multi Culture has destroyed our "Beautiful Romantic Island"and this causes hate among communities!
