  • Hello and welcome back to North East Nostalgic!
Today we’re in Newcastle, exploring an underrated historic gem located on the bustling City Road
I’ve wanted to take a look at this scary looking building for quite a while after seeing it for the first time from the Quayside.
All the old photographs are from Newcastle Libraries Flickr account - It's a treasure trove of amazing photos of old Newcastle and the North East! www.flickr.com...

My grandmother Lucy Bell Richards born in number 1 my great grandfather William Richards died there in number 6. A lot of my family were Keelmen and as a working class financed hospital the Newcastle council have behaved appallingly in its neglect. I believe it's the only one of its type in the country and as such should be preserved and promoted as a working class monument. It deserves it.

It's disgusting that the council has left this place to decline!

Deliberately too that's how they bring down old grade listed buildings they want to rip down. Leave the windows open to let the air in and then blame young lads for smashing it up or setting it alight. It happens all the time

The council have let Newcastle decline in general to a modern city slum. Sadly the residents keep voting for it.

Does it actually Belong to city Council? Because if it does; why have they not sold it to developers who would turn it into multi-million pounds worth of posh apartments for the Rich and Indolent...? 🤔

Another lovely and interesting video. I worked in Newcastle for over 22 years and often drove along City Road, but I never knew this building was there. I'm loving your videos, finding out things about our local history. Great work, keep them coming. 😊👍

Tiny point but I couldn't help getting distracted every time you said it. There's no 'S' in the middle of Keelmen.
Apart from that, a very good video!

Disgraceful it is in such disrepair . They should do it up and promote as a historical tourist attraction .

Went to a crazy rave all nighter here in 1990, there were fire breathers in the court yard. I thought they were student halls of residence at the time although i might be wrong about that

I think they were students residence at one time, it's crazy to think such historic buildings were used for students 😂

@@northeastnostalgic5071 Hi, I heard that the engines required for the London Tower bridge were manufactured at Newcastle. I'd love to see your videos on that topic😊

I was born and brought up opposite Garth Heads 1963 to 1973 (then derelict), about a minute's walk from the Keelsman Hospital. It was a fantastic looking building, even though it was empty. My brother and I used to get into the old hospital and play in the empty rooms (kids used to do that sort of thing then).. iirc there was a "secret garden" in the centre, that seemed to be tended (which was odd). Shame that the building has fallen into such disrepair. Haven't been back to Newcastle in 30 years, and not to this area for around 40. It was nice to see footage of an environs I still remember so well. Cheers!
