A friend's sister was married to a very wealthy man. She didn't exactly marry for money, as she was very young when she married and her husband made his fortune years after. Anyway, her husband would pamper her by changing her car every two years (she would always drive the latest Jaguar or Mercedes Benz), she would buy whatever she wanted, dine wherever she wanted, owned a quite impressive collection of Louis Vuitton bags, etc. Yet her life was absolutely miserable as the man publically cheated on her with his secretary and (I assume) they didn't really have a happy marriage. She suffered from severe depression, had alcohol problems and pretty much was the typical rich wife who depended on pills to be fairly functional. She ended up dying in very mysterious circumstances, but her family decided not to make any further investigation. I'm not saying that all rich wives are condemned to unhappiness, but being married into fortune, having open credit, and not having to work for a living is definitely not the safest ticket to bliss either.

He was always ranting and raving about the power bill. Our house was like boot camp. We had millions of chores right from a young age ...standing on a chair to wash the dishes, lots of ironing to do, huge sliding glass doors and windows to clean every weekend, feeding the chickens (we didn't mind that)...polishing and vacuuming...if our beds weren't made properly my mother would rip the whole thing apart throwing the mattress on the floor and we'd have to start again. If our drawers and closets weren't tidy enough she'd rip everything out and throw it on the floor (mommy dearest) and we'd have to redo it all. My mother was unhappy in this, her third marriage with an older rich man who was a miser. So she took it out on us. She told me she knew she had made a mistake within 3 months pf marrying him as he hated me and made my life hell. I was only 7 when she married him. But she stayed with him anyway and sacrificed me. When I was 16 she had some crazy idea of getting me married off to some rich old man and she made me attend a widows dance......I was SO embarrassed, Nobody would believe I was a 16 year old widow, and all the people there were in their 60s and 70s.....nobody wanted to dance with me - they wanted partners their own age. Thank heaven she never made me go back there. I've only ever loved ordinary working class guys - tradesmen, a bricklayer, a bus driver......My first wedding cost a hundred bucks....we laughed then and I'm laughing now. My second wedding cost even less, in my second hand $3 dress and my second hand $4 shoes.....
