    Wow, she gave me chills. She was so RAW and REAL. I really hope this goes viral. Coby Evers, (my 1st cousin) in his late 20’s, this was his 3rd year as a teacher and the CHS debate coach and this award is so deserved!! Go CHS!!

    Refuting this utter garbage.
    1st: The term "assault rifle" is often misused. It’s important to clarify that "assault rifle" is a term that lacks a precise legal definition in the United States. The term is often used in political and media discourse to describe a variety of semi-automatic firearms, but this usage can be misleading. The actual AK-47, or Avtomat Kalashnikova, is a specific type of firearm designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, and it's important to recognize that neither the rifle's official designation nor its manual uses terms like "deadly weapon" to sensationalize its purpose as a tool.
    2nd:The tactic of using tragic events, especially the deaths of children, to push a particular political agenda is not only inappropriate but also deeply insensitive. It’s important to honor the victims and their families without exploiting their grief for rhetorical purposes. The use of emotionally charged appeals like the standard "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" often oversimplifies complex issues and detracts from constructive debate.
    3rd: The claim that banning drag queens has anything to do with preventing school shootings is a non sequitur. Governor Abbott's legislation was focused on restricting sexually oriented performances in public spaces where minors could be present, not specifically targeting drag queens or linking these performances to school shootings. Dedicating drag shows to minors raises legitimate concerns for many people, but this issue should be discussed independently of the gun control debate.
    4th: The assertion that firearms can be bought "at just any store" is inaccurate. Gun purchases in the United States are subject to strict regulations. In states like Texas, for example, purchasing a firearm requires passing a criminal background check, and there is often a mandatory waiting period. It's important to understand and accurately represent the laws surrounding firearm purchases.
    5th: The reference to the Sandy Hook shooting is a reminder of the complex factors that contribute to such tragedies. The shooter, Adam Lanza, had significant mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. While this does not excuse his actions, it highlights the need for a more nuanced conversation about mental health.
    6th: Returning to the "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" rhetoric once again illustrates a problematic approach to advocacy. Exploiting the deaths of children to advance a political agenda is not only ethically questionable but also unlikely to lead to productive solutions. There are more respectful and effective ways to engage in this important debate.

      Appeal to emotion Like she did with the introduction of the story from the teacher? Idk I’m not sure

    • @tableofteaspoons
      @tableofteaspoons 6 місяців тому +1

      if they are personal poems, definitely include your own feelings. learn how to use your voice to mimic emotion consistently, and learning how to fake some tears can go a long way.
      like sage said appeal to emotion is great but always remember, how you say things can be CRAZILY more impactful than what you say (although you should be writing well for poetry)
      edit: also if you get the chance do literature or action studies on speeches like this one (and ones from your event) -- talk to varsity from your school or in your league, talk to coaches, and most of all, have fun with it.
