    One thing that I've found very helpful in the past is to have something that sort of describes the major groups that's not my character and what their general goals are, so that way I know sort of how the world "lives" outside of what my characters specifically does. Blades in the Dark's list of Duskvol's factions is a really good example of how to do this. Blades in the Dark is a fantastic game in general, probably not really suitable for solo play, but as a solo gamer I find that we can get all sorts of great information and inspiration from all sorts of different games.
    The other thing that helps me is tables. All sorts of tables, but usually ones I make myself. Creating my own tables for things really helps not only get me into whatever setting I'm playing in, but also helps me decide on the types of things I want to focus on. The places to visit, the things to find, the people to meet, all these sort of things. I think that kind of ties in well with your idea about having anchors.
    And finally what helps me a lot is board games. There's a lot of board games out there that are suitable for solo play or at least close enough and sometimes games just have great components that are useful in coming up with ideas or situations. I believe you brought that up yourself in a previous video as well. Sometimes a setting grabs me, sometimes it'll be certain types of rules. You never know when inspiration might grab you.

    "Prepping is playing" is really an eye opener for me. I realize now that my anchor point is knowing that other people will eventually play in these worlds I build. I can spend weeks (even months) prepping/soloing, but if I don't feel certain that my players will see it at some point it looses meaning for me. I only recently realized that I am essentially soloing most of the time I spend on rpgs, and that it is actually fine. I now bought ironsworn and will formally try the solo-playing experience instead of "just" prepping". Peace ❤

    I've been soloing since 1980 lol
    In the dm guide adnd there are Dungeon generators ..random encounter tables ...treasure tables...etc etc. Solo was always an option. 😉

      I tend to use scenes during game play and after each scene write a small paragraph in a cheap spiral notebook. when a game session is over I have a small story that I can review at a later time.

    I’ve done both, the pure anchor way and the narrative way. They both work very well. The key is to use the resources that are available to us as players to create the experience that we desire in our solo games. All of the books, generators, tools and resources are tools that we can leverage. Great video!

    I am SOOO glad I checked out Ars Magica. It's like the game was made for me! Ugh, I wish I found it sooner. Thanks sooooo much for discussing it! That and the Tome of Adventure design are the books I cannot play without.. and Scarlet Heroes' solo section.

      Would you happen to know where I could purchase a legitimate hard copy? I looked on Amazon and it appears (based on the reviews) that some people are simply creating hard bound versions themselves. I went to the actual Game company and they are out of stock.

    Thank you so much for these videos... I am a math and computer science teacher in Queens, New York. I am also a father of 2 daughters ages 6 and 10. My older one loves puzzle games and we introduced her to Choose Your Own Adventure books about 2 years ago...Now she’s starting to get interested in d100 dungeon and 4 against darkness. We really enjoyed your videos on solo dungeon generation. Did you ever hear of the My Little Pony RPG? My younger one loves the show. It would be great if you can do a review for it. Thank you again. Well thank you so much for these comments. As a parent of two myself, I'm especially pleased to hear kids are watching my vids. (The very first vid on this channel is with me and one of my kids... for Legion of Darkness).
      You might also look into Pocket Dungeon (did a vid on that too; it was one I played with my oldest and I give some brief examples of her work on that game)
      Anyhow: I have heard tell of My Little Pony RPG but never seen it nor do I know anything about it. (I have a Rainbow Dash somewhere in my apartment still... I've got a long list of things to look into but I will add this to it. Thanks for the comment and suggestion.

    Hey! Have you had a look at Fallen Land by Fallen Dominion?
    It's a post-apocalyptic card driven story-telling game dripping with theme!
    And if you get the A Journey into Darkness expansion, it has two different solo variants!!
    I highly recommend it!!

    Often the best way to solo, is to play something made FOR solo. As much as I love several designs, I have found that nothing quite beats something like D100 Dungeon, a design that is made specifically to play solo. If you need a screw driver, a power drill might not be the tool you want.

    Uhg! The more videos I watch from you the more I spend on amazon! :) Starfinder looks awesome. Can I get away with just the core rulebook to start? or should I grab the alien acrhive, armory books etc? Thanks for any help!

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  2 роки тому +1

      Sorry to say.... I would get also Alien Archive to start. Lots of great stuff in there to develop stories around the aliens etc. for me the armory material is less necessary or compelling. Different gamers may have different thoughts on that of course! Thx for watching and glad you enjoyed!

    I was watching this and noticed the DM’s guide which I think is 3rdedition D&D and I think a 5th edition book,plus in another vid I’ve seen you use a 1st Ed DM’s guide,I didn’t think you actually played D&D (if I remember correctly form another vid,I may be wrong 😬lol)are theses random books from different editions you picked up or do you have the sets from each edition?,or do they perhaps belong do your children?

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  4 роки тому

      Gerome Coombes I’ve played many different editions of d&d over the years. What makes it into my solo vids are those books that I think work best for solo (for one reason or another)-thus the mixing and matching, not only of different editions but also of different systems across my channel.

    • @GC-wj6ni
      @GC-wj6ni 4 роки тому

      Geek Gamers oh,I see,how many different books on average do you tend to use per game do you think?,did you not like playing solo with just the one system?.I started role playing with D&D Basic then 1st Ed but my 1st Ed are the ones where they had changed the covers(83 I think?),the FM’s guide has a robed figure holding open double doors.

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  4 роки тому

      @@GC-wj6ni Really depends on the system. For newer rules I'd usually just use the one book as published (like Ironsworn, for example or Blades in the Dark--tho Blades had a solo supplement I used). With d&d, since I've played so many iterations over the years--much more solo than not--I've just gravitated to my own mishmash in a way. That's really the one where I pick and choose the most.

      What do you mean by tethering points?

    • @GeekGamers01
      @GeekGamers01  5 років тому +1

      Pokemon4WoT I am talking about using some kind of pre-existing structure-a turn order or sequence of play or some set number of action points or something else “gamey”-that you can return to so you can keep your adventure moving along and not get lost in the wilderness of your mind. (Of course you can always abandon that whenever you want. You’re the GM too, and thus in charge)

    sorry, but everything you say in this video confuses me even more. On the one hand you speak about some kind of anchor that seems to imply time pressure, then you - all of sudden - switch to an art piece and tell that this could be your anchor point. Not even close to understanding what you're saying here. For me it feels, your videos should cut more to the core, as they seem to be a bit fluffy.
